THE AMERICAN FOREIGN LEGION: BLACK SOLDIERS OF THE 93d IN WORLD WAR I., Roberts, Frank E.
146 Roberts, Frank E. THE AMERICAN FOREIGN LEGION: BLACK SOLDIERS OF THE 93d IN WORLD WAR I.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 2004.
259 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1591147344 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "Still segregated in World War I, the U.S. Army was reluctant to use its 93d Division of black soldiers in combat with its own units and instead assigned the division's three National Guard regiments and one draftee regiment to the French Army. The battlefield successes of these African Americans under the French at the height of the German offensives in 1918 turned white e x p e c t a t i ons of failure upside down. Their bravery and heroism gained the respect of the French and Germans alike and called into question the U.S. Army's policy of racially segregating its divisions. The full story of their accomplishmen ts i s to ld h er e fo r the first time. Written from the perspective of the enlisted men and their white and black officers, this book highlights the combat action of individuals as well as entire units of the 93d. Readers join Company C of the 37 0th I nfa ntr y u nde r hea vy fire as they capture artillery pieces, machine guns, and even a portion of a railroad track to become the first American unit to win the Croix de Guerre. They learn about the extraordinary bravery of Cpl. Freddie Sto wers , t he o nly Afri can Am eric an in the war to be nominated for - and seventy years later posthumously awarded - the Medal of Honor, and others who earned the Distinguished Service Cross and French awards for gallantry in combat. In all, some 3,500 men of t he 9 3d fe ll i n b attle with 591 of them buried in France next to their white comrades, the only equality that the U.S. Army then granted them. Their story of overcoming the odds at a time when most believed blacks performe d poo rly in comb at is told by Fra nk E. Rob erts, who has been researching the subject for years. While acknowledging the many problems encountered by the 93d, he focuses on the many triumphs of these tenacious soldiers as they fought both the enemy and the preju dices of th eir fel low Am erica ns." FORTRESS EUROPE., Rolf, Rudi and Saal, Peter.
147 Rolf, Rudi and Saal, Peter. FORTRESS EUROPE.
Shrewsbury Airlife 1988 1853100323 / 9781853100321 First English Edition Soft Cover Very Good
166 pp, 9 5/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, plans. "The German capture of the supposedly impregnable Belgian fortress of Eben-Emael in May 1940 shocked the world, while the vaunted Maginot Line proved useless against an enemy who virtually ignored and bypassed it. As always, military planners had designed for the last rather than for the next war, ignoring the advances in tank and aircraft technology which had revolutionised warfare. Even the Germans fell into the same trap, building the Atlantic Wall and the Channel Island defences against invasion from the sea and the West Wall (the so-called 'Siegfried Line') against any possible invasion of Germany itself from the west. As a result, throughout the 1930s and '40s Western Europe was covered by deeply dug-in bunkers, artillery, machine-guns and anti-aircraft emplacements, observation and fire direction towers, underground magazines and other fortifications, a vast number of which survive to this day due either to their inherent strength or the work of preservation enthusiasts. This book explores the history of modern fortifications from the 1870s, showing how designs changed radically to meet new threats, particularly in the form of artillery. It shows how some of the major forts fared in battle in both World Wars, and with the aid of dozens of clear maps and photographs, provides a detailed travel-guide for everyone wishing to explore their frequently well-preserved remains. Most are open to the public and many house museums, so opening times are also included. These defensive lines and positions, fashioned from steel and concrete, have stood idle now for over forty years yet still exercise a tremen-dous pull on the imagination. This book will thus be invaluable not only to students of fortifications but also to anyone touring France, Holland, Belgium, Germany or the Channel Islands." PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE., Routledge, Paul.
150 Routledge, Paul. PUBLIC SERVANT, SECRET AGENT: THE ELUSIVE LIFE AND VIOLENT DEATH OF AIREY NEAVE.
London Fourth Estate 2002 1841552447 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
392 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "On 30 March 1979 for the first time in more than 100 years an MP was killed in the precincts of the House of Commons. And his was a very violent death: a bomb, triggered by the ascent of his car up the ramp from the underground car park, detonated enough explosives to sever his legs from his body and render him unrecognisable. Airey Neave was a loyal Tory backbencher who had last held ministerial office in 1959. What, then, had he done to deserve such a vicious and bloody attack? Neave was an extraordinary man. Eton and Oxford educated, he served in the Royal Artillery and was captured and ultimately imprisoned in Colditz. He became the first Briton to escape. On the strength of his experience he was recruited by the security services to a divison of MI6 and was an advisor on escape and insurrection in occupied Europe until the end of the second world war. (After his work at the Nuremberg trials he) moved into open politics, as MP for Abingdon from 1953, without ever losing his taste for the covert. A shadowy figure on the right of the Conservative party, he ploted the overthrow of Ted Heath and the installation of Margaret Thatcher. (When Neave asked Thatcher for Northern Ireland, the) intelligence services found they had one of their men in a pivotal role at a crucial moment. To Irish Nationalists, Neave was a threat that could not be allowed to thrive. His life and death were enacted in the deep shadows just behind the glare of public life." Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1981 0919822347 / 9780919822344 Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
88 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "At eighteen, along with several of his Boy Scout pals, Shrive joined the 129th Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. Chistmas 1916 found Shrive in England, encamped in the seemingly endless rain on Salisbury Plain. The next May he was on the Western Front and on June 17, 1917, still only nineteen, he was struck by shrapnel at Vimy Ridge. By one of the ironies that war provides he can be considered lucky, for his wounds sent him to England to convalesce. There we pick up his story on (a) September afternoon. His narrative begins at this point, where chance intervened to change the direction of his life. While lying on a Kentish hillside, he saw two airplanes, then new-fangled marvels, cavorting in the sky above. Why didn't he join the infant Royal Flying Corps, a friend present asked? The thought was not a new one, but the moment to act was. Young Shrive joined the RFC and made, as he recognised at the time, 'one of the most important decisions of my life.' One significant result of this decision came a year later when the newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Frank Shrive of the Royal Flying Corps found himself on board the SS Stephen, out of Dundee, bound for Russia. With him was a Canadian artillery brigade and infantry regiments from the United States, Britain and France. They were on their way to Archangel on the northern Russian coast and, though they did not perhaps realize it, were about to participate in the Russian Civil War." Minor edge wear. After a severe bout of trench fever he was transferred to the Royal Engineers Special Branch where he worked on various camouflage devices. (In this book the) horrors of war in the trenches are brought to life with a rare immediacy and power - Len's colour sketches of the people and places he encountered create an extraordinary intimacy and tremendous sense of being at his side during his experiences." BRITONS TO ARMS! THE STORY OF THE BRITISH VOLUNTEER SOLDIER AND THE VOLUNTEER TRADITION IN LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND., Steppler, Glenn A.
159 Steppler, Glenn A. BRITONS TO ARMS! THE STORY OF THE BRITISH VOLUNTEER SOLDIER AND THE VOLUNTEER TRADITION IN LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND.
Budding, Stroud, 1997, reprint.
185 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840150149 "At first a spontaneous and temporary response to threats of invasion and internal rebellion, the British Volunteer became a permanent feature of military organization in the mid-Victorian era, eventually evolving into the territorial soldier of the twentieth century. Presented here is a general history of the Volunteer forces together with a detailed account of the experience of two Midland counties - Leicester s h i r e a nd Rutland. Thus both the intensely local dimension of what were initially ad hoc town and village corps, and the national significance of the British volunteer tradition are explored. Spanning three centuries, from the early eighteen th t o th e m id -twentieth century, this book charts the evolution, and the persistence, of a recurring phenomenon. It explains the exact origin and nature of the Napoleonic Volunteer Force and its mounted arm, the Yeomanry; the Victorian Rifle V olu nte er s a nd t he Territorials of the twentieth century, as well as the Home Guard of 1940 and its little-known predecessor, the Volunteer Training Corps of the First World War. Illustrated with twenty-four pages of contemporary black-and-whi te i llus tra tion s a nd set firmly in its social and political context, with careful attention paid to the organization, development and military role of the Volunteer forces, this is the story of a distinctly British institution." ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA., Swettenham, John.
160 Swettenham, John. ALLIED INTERVENTION IN RUSSIA 1918-1919 AND THE PART PLAYED BY CANADA.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
315 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Allied intervention (in the Russian Civil War) took place in three main theatres; Northern and Southern Russia as well as Siberia. Canadians served in all these places - in fact Canada was the major Commonwealth contributor to the intervention in Siberia - and a superficial account of the events and their political implications is contained in the official history of the Canadian Army in the First World War. John Swettenham, who drafted the Canadian account, now treats the subject in depth and in international perspective. Official British records for the period (were at the time of printing) still witheld from scholars; those in Ottawa, however, are not and these have been consulted to throw new light on the motives and actions of the intervening powers. In this critical assessment the story of the Allied operations in Russia has been written against the double background of the issues and events of the Russian Civil War itself and of the international intrigues and rivalries of the erstwhile Allies; thus the inverventionists' role can be seen in a broad perspective. The reasons for failure - so that Bolshevik Russia emerged 'thoroughly militarised - bitterly hostile' are plainly given." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling/rubbing, a few tiny scratches on front panel.
