CHARLES' GIFT: SALUTE TO A MARYLAND HOUSE OF 1650. WITH SIGNED LETTER., Footner, Hulbert. (William Hulbert Footner.)
141 Footner, Hulbert. (William Hulbert Footner.) CHARLES' GIFT: SALUTE TO A MARYLAND HOUSE OF 1650. WITH SIGNED LETTER.
New York Harper & Brothers 1939 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Paul Braun & Arthur Mooney, photography. Inscribed By Author
290 pp, 8 7/8" H. Dark blue cloth spine (with gilt lettering/decoration) and corners, light blue paper-covered boards and endpapers. B&w photographs by Paul Braun, Arthur Mooney and others. Inscribed on half title page: "Norah and Chew Atkins / their book inscribed in / memory of old times by / Hulbert Footner / Jan 22nd 1940". Also included, an autograph letter signed by Footner, on Charlesgift notepaper, referring to a possible visit and mentioning that "For August everything too, is uncertain. I have a lot of theatrical business coming to a head, and it may be necessary for me to be in New York at that time." (Footner uses small x's instead of periods in the text.) The envelope is postmarked Solomons, MD, 1916. During the 1916-17 season, Footner's play "Shirley Kaye" had a reasonably successful run at the Hudson Theatre, New York and the proceeds helped in the restoration of Charles' Gift. Also laid in at front, the previously folded, chipped and wrinkled/creased front panel and flap from the original dust jacket. Hulbert Footner (1879-1944) explored large areas of Northern Canada by canoe in his early years and produced works of fiction and non-fiction based on his experiences. He was also a playwright and in later life, a successful mystery writer, creating such characters as Madame Rosika Storey. This semi-autobiographical book details the purchase and restoration of an historic house, but also looks back into the history of Calvert County and recounts the people and events that played a part in Footner's life for over thirty years. Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning and scattered tiny/small foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top and top corner, a few small foxing marks on preliminary pages and on the last few blank papes, a few tiny dents on bottom of text block.

New York Del Rey / Ballantine Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good Darrell K. Sweet (1-4), cover art.
Seven of the first eight books of the 'Pip and Flinx' series - 6 7/8" H. ***Please note: "For Love of Mother-Not" is not included in this grouping - it would be book 1 or book 5, depending on whether you are reading in publication or chronological order.*** 1. Tar-Aiym Krang - 251 pp, 1983 8th printing, ISBN 034530280X. "The planet (Moth) attracted unwary travelers, hardened space-sailors, and merchant buccaneers - a teeming, constantly shifting horde that provided a comfortable income for certain quick-witted fellows like Flinx and his pet flying-snake Pip. With his odd talents, the pickings were easy enough so that Flinx did not have to be dishonest - most of the time. In fact, it hardly seemed dishonest at all to steal a starmap from a dead body that didn't really need it anymore. But Flinx wasn't quite smart enough. He should have wondered why the body was dead!" 2. Orphan Star - 234 pp, 1977 20th printing, ISBN 0345324498. "His birth had been shrouded in mystery, and all Flinx knew of himself was that he'd been abandoned by those who had spawned him. Raised by Mother Mastiff in the marketplace of Drallar, Flinx eventually discovered that his unknown parents had bequeathed to him a curious legacy - a legacy of extraordinary mental powers that were both an incalculable asset and a most dangerous liability. (It) would lead him - and his potent protector, the minidrag Pip - into the clutches of one of the most depraved and powerful men in the galaxy - on to a harrowing search for the truth about his birth - and out of one world into another on his most dangerous adventure ever." 3. End of the Matter - 246 pp, 1987 7th printing, ISBN 0345334655. "Flinx set out for Alaspin, the ruggedly primitive homeplanet of his flying snake. There he hoped to find the giant man with the gold earring who somehow held the key to Flinx's mysterious past and to the strange powers he possessed. Chasing down his heritage was trouble enough, but Flinx didn't know what real trouble was until he realized that the Qwarm - a deadly assassin squad - were three steps behind him with a contract to kill." 4. Bloodhype - 249 pp, 1977 2nd printing, ISBN 0345258452150. "Bloodhype was the most dangerous drug in the galaxy. It caused instant addiction, followed by an excruciatingly slow death, and there was no known - or unknown - antidote. Supposedly the drug had been totally eradicated from the humanx galaxy years before. At least that's what everyone thought. But somehow, mysteriously, that dreadful substance was back in circulation on Repler and threatening to wreak havoc throughout the known galaxy. Someone, somewhere was secretly manufacturing Bloodhype, but nobody seemed to know where or who!". 5. Flinx in Flux - 324 pp, 1988 12th printing, ISBN 0345343638. "(When Flinx and Pip) found an unconscious young woman on a riverbank deep in the jungles of Alaspin, Flinx wasn't surprised. Nor was he shocked to learn that the woman, Clarity Held, was a brilliant scientist, abducted from a remote outpost on inhospitable Longtunnel by a group of fanatic assassins. Flinx could see no harm in returning Clarity to her base before continuing on his way, but he was tired of solving other people's problems. He had his own life to get back to. So he was unprepared for the emotional effect the beautiful Clarity had on him. But while Flinx fought to deal with his unexpected dilemma, the assassins were still at work. They would do anything to stop the research on Longtunnel and would kill anyone or anything that got in their way." 6. Mid-Flinx - 346 pp, 1996 2nd printing, ISBN 0345406443. "(An) evil rich man was out to kidnap the minidrag for his personal zoo, and Flinx and Pip were on the run again - this time into uncharted space, on a random course they hoped would foil their pursuers. They found more than they bargained for when they landed on Midworld, a verdant planet covered by an immense jungle, hosting an incredible variety of plant and animal life - all of it unknown and all of it deadly. And now they were in real trouble. Their hiding place was in danger of discovery, and their only hope lay with this bizarre and untamed planet - if it didn't kill them first!" 7. Reunion - 342 pp, 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0345418689. "Usiing his enhanced empathic abilities, Flinx finesses his way into a top-secret security installation on Earth. Once there, he bamboozles a sophisticated AI program into releasing classified information about the Meliorare Society, the sect of renegade eugenicists whose experiments with human beings had horrified the civilized universe more than twenty years ago. After all, as one of the few Meliorare experiments to survive, Flinx has a right to know about his past. Especially since his telepathic powers seem to be evolving. The question is, evolving into what? The excruciating headaches afflicting Flinx with increasing frequency make him wonder if he will be alive to find out." Interiors - most books have light to moderate browning to inside of covers, most books have minor to very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. MY HISTORY: A MEMOIR OF GROWING UP., Fraser, Antonia.
147 Fraser, Antonia. MY HISTORY: A MEMOIR OF GROWING UP.
Doubleday Canada 2015 0385685173 / 9780385685177 First Canadian Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
268 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Born Antonia Pakenham (in 1932), the eldest of eight children of the future Lord and Lady Longford, her childhood was spent in Oxford, where her father was a don at Christ Church. Evacuation at the beginning of the war to a romantic Elizabethan manor house nearby was an inspiration for historical imaginings. There were adventures in Anglo-Ireland at Dunsany Castle and Pakenham Hall, each offering her treasured links to the past which became private obsessions. North Oxford wartime life included four years as one of the few girls then admitted to the Dragon School for boys, followed by time at a convent school after her family's conversion to Catholicism. Her father joined the Labour Government in 1945 as a Minister, which provided an odd background for exploits such as working in a Bond Stree hat shop and a season as a self-made debutante. A job in publishing, by a fortunate coincidence, followed Oxford University and the book ends with the publishing of 'Mary Queen of Scots', which became a worldwide bestseller - to general amazement (including the author's). This magical memoir, told with inimitable humour and style, will take many readers back to their own discovery of History. It is an unforgettable account of one person's journey towards becoming a writer - and a historian." Very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning at bottom edge of boards, small very light soiling mark on front board, very light browning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at bottom of rear panel.

New York Orion 1989 0517576910 / 9780517576915 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good John B. Rabbets, color profiles.
311 pp, 4to (11 1/6" H). B&w photographs, maps, color profiles. "Charting the remarkable record of the 8th Air Force from its creation in 1942, through its fundamental role in taking the battle to Hitler's Germany when it became the largest air unit ever committed to battle, to its departure from the United Kingdom after victory had been achieved, this comprehensive history explains the formation strategies and aircraft deployed and does so with extensive use of the reminiscences of veterans of 'The Eighth'. Historians are united in acknowledging the vital part played by the 8th Air Force in securing the Allied success and, as the heroic events of the conflict are commemorated half a century later, this book which first coined the admirable, and now universally accepted, prefix 'MIGHTY', returns to print to remain the finest tribute to the airmen who knew their task, undertook it with determination, and successfully completed it." UNDERSTANDING SHAKESPEARE: MACBETH. A TUTOR TEXT., Frieman, Ruth. (William Shakespeare.)
149 Frieman, Ruth. (William Shakespeare.) UNDERSTANDING SHAKESPEARE: MACBETH. A TUTOR TEXT.
Garden City, New York Doubleday 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket
189 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)he reader is guided by Ruth Frieman's clear and penetrating explanations into the rich complexities of meaning, imagery, and characterization of 'Macbeth' - and gains a deeper understanding of the greatest playwright in English Literature. Macbeth as obedient husband, fearful and indecisive conspirator, calculating murderer, and finally as the haunted man who faces death with courage - all sides of this complex protagonist are revealed as the author traces Macbeth's steady movement towards his inexorable destiny in one of Shakespeare's most powerful tragedies. Featuring a helpful, introductory historical background on the Elizabethan theatre and Shakespeare's life, the 'Macbeth' TutorText will be an invaluable aid to high school English students and to all who seek a deeper comprehension of the famous Bard. (Includes a) line-by-line discussion of the text. (Miss Frieman's) lucid analysis bridges the gap between the obscure words and archaic idioms of the 16th century and the language of the 20th century, and she accompanies the text with discussions of the nature of tragedy and the tragic hero, Shakespeare's use of prose and poetry, the relationship between rhythm, rhyme, and meter, the effects of metaphor, and the use of dramatic and stage devices." SURVIVOR'S STORY., Gibbs, Gerald, Air Marshal Sir.
154 Gibbs, Gerald, Air Marshal Sir. SURVIVOR'S STORY.
London Hutchinson 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair
182 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Distinguished survivor of the early flying days and of many campaigns, (the author) was the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. This is the story not only of his own long and exciting years of service in many parts of the world, but also of the Air Force itself, from the time of the Flying Corps to the present day. In this book he strikes a new and very readable line among senior Air Force writers for he does not forget to give due place to the lighter and social side. His accounts of those early days, when he served with the R.F.C. at Aboukir, are both inspiring and amusing. After the First World War (he) had a highly eventful spell of service in Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan, and later, in the early 1930's, he went to Kenya and the Sudan. He has many good big-game stories to tell, and many valuable comments to make, also, upon conditons in these troubled regions. A high-spot of his book is his account of the Battle of Britain, throwing as it does considerable light upon the controversies regarding R.A.F. tactics and control. He had wide personal experience, too, of the war in Burma, and was also present at Singapore when the Japanese surrendered. After the war, before his final appointment in India, he spent three years on United Nations work in the U.S.A., and he writes of America, as of India, with a sympathy born of intimate knowledge". Light scattered foxing on end papers and on edges of text block, very small stain on rear free end paper, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on edges of text block and edges of boards. Dust jacket has edge creasing, several chips and small edge pieces missing, several small and tiny edge tears, light browing, very light tiny foxing marks on rear panel and flap-folds.

London Faber and Faber 1979 0751114547 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Russell Drysdale, dust jacket illustration.
265 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Matty appears out of the flaming destruction of the Blitz. Who is he? Is he more or less than an ordinary human? Is the journal he keeps madness or inspiration? The twins are young enough to be his daughters: Sophy - dark, amoral, cruel; and Toni - fair, brilliant, empty. Their generation inhabits a world of cold terror, a world running down, a world where love is dying. Yet Matty and Toni never meet, and Matty and Sophy for no more than a moment. There are others too, like Sebastian Pedigree, thought by some to the the wickedest of men - William Golding has written a story of our times, a chilling mystery which never ceases to mystify. The master of disturbing suggestion, he stirs up the sediment of dark thoughts and half-ideas within us all; but for the reader as well as the characters, the reality of inarticulate fear emerges more clearly than ever." Pages browning very lightly. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny spot of discoloration on rear panel.

375 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, political cartoons. Signed by author on title page. "In the tenth decade of Canada's confederation, the expansive and unifying post-war boom gave way to rapid change and conflicting choices. These were the years of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, years when Canada's culture, economy, and politics took new directions and the foundations of today's political and social realities were laid. Beginning with a survey of the country in 1957, poised to grasp Diefenbaker's grand 'Vision', the author vividly describes how the Progressive Conservative promise won the nation - and later could not be fulfilled. In these critical years Canada joined NORAD and scrapped the Avro Arrow jet fighter; the Diefenbaker Cabinet tore itself apart over the nuclear arms question. At the same time, the economic crisis of the early sixties gave the Liberals a much-needed political weapon as the government faced soaring budget deficits, a declining dollar, and a severe recession. Politics mirrored public feelings in the mid-1960s as governments federal and provincial addressed new kinds of problems. Unification of the armed forces, medicare, and bilingualism in the public services, especially in the context of the growing political and cultural ferment in Quebec, proved divisive as well as innovative." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jackat has very small tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, some very light edge wear/wrinkling with one tiny tear archivally taped.

370 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "It was nothing less than a miracle - the transformation of Canada's army at the beginning of the Second World War into a well-oiled fighting machine that became a significant factor in the Allied victory. But the miracle didn't just happen by itself. It was largely the result of the leadership of Canada's top military commanders. Some were great men, others were sadly flawed characters. Here, in one volume, are the stories of Canada's most important military leaders." Light waviness/wrinkling to free front endpaper, a few small pencil erasure marks in margins and text, small bookstore label on rear pastedown, tiny ink mark on bottom of textblock (not a remainder mark). Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling.
