142 Devins, Joseph H., Jr. THE VAAGSO RAID: THE COMMANDO ATTACK THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR II.
Chilton, Philadelphia, 1968.
222 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "In the dark, early morning hours of Saturday, December 27, 1941, a small force of British warships escorting two camouflaged excursion steamers slipped past a German lookou t station and sailed boldly into one of the great fjords of occupied Norway. Aboard the two steamers a tense group of British and Norwegian commandos rechecked their weapons and waited for the reaction of the nearby German coastal batteries . T h e t arget: Vaagso Island. Earlier thrusts by British raiding parties had deliberately avoided heavily defended sectors of the enemy coast. This was to be the first raid of the war on a fortified postion, a demonstration that the offensive sp i ri t wa s s trong in Britain despite the Nazi conquest of the Continent and the humiliation of Dunkerque. But the consequences of this sortie would reach far beyond the snow-covered mountains which reverberated that Saturday with the thud of ex pl o sio ns an d the snarl and rattle of sub-machine guns. The British gained vital experience in inter-service cooperation and information that would prove invaluable in subsequent raids on Dieppe and St. Nazaire. But in Berlin, Hitler was asto nis he d at th e da ri ng a nd apparent readiness of the British to hurl their forces into the teeth of a well prepared defense. As a result, he made decisions of major strategic importance. This is the story of a group of courageous men, of how they de velop ed a new typ e of fighting force, how they fought, how they died, and how they altered the course of the war." One tiny corner bump, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, two small light soiling marks at bott om of rear pas tedown , lig ht da mpne ss ma rks at top/bottom of front board. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing - mainly on rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, several dampness stains on inside top/bottom edge of front panel, several very s mall t ears/ chips. 143 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." Small crease at top corner of pages 11 to 34, very light browning to free endpapers, very small light glue stain on free rear endpaper, tiny dent on fore-edge of pages 55 to 64 - tiny chip on page leaf 59/60, very light browning to top of text block, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear board. "In April 1943, the Royal Canadian Navy assumed responsibility for Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command, the only operational area to be run by a Canadian Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Base d on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that con f r o nted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-ill us tr at ed history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC., Dunmore, Spencer.
159 Dunmore, Spencer. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC.
McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." "Full of personal anecdotes, (this) is the story of the BCATP (British Commonwealth Air Training Plan) and of the politicians who negotiated it into existence, of the officers and airmen of the RCAF and the RAF, and of the many civilians who made it work day by day. Above all, it is the story of the young men who entered the scheme as clerks and farmers, students and salesmen, and graduated as pilots, navigators, air gunners, air bombers, and flight engineers." Light cigarette odour, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling - tiny tear and light wear at bottom of rear flap-fold.
