A vivd narrative history of University College and its place in the municipal and social life of Victorian Toronto follows. The heart of the book is an architectural history of the University. This spans eight decades and is illustrated by many of the various architects' own drawings (almost none of which have ever been reproduced before). In the third chapter Richardson deals with the little-known and ambitious earlier projects of Charles Fowler, John Howard and Thomas Young, which were intended to provide splendidly for the University of King's College. Next he focuses on the grand design drawn up by Cumberland & Storm for its successor, University College (and the University of Toronto) in 1856, and then on (to) the realization of those plans in U.C. The last chapter brings the story down to the opening years of the twentieth century, including the development of the campus around the College, the fire that gutted most of it in 1890, and the reconstruction within the surviving shell under D .B. Dick." A few very small bumps to edges of front board, two very small light stains on fore-edge of textblock, very light edge wear. THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
130 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME III: 1921-1929.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1992 0195409361 / 9780195409369 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The third volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' reveals "Montgomery in mature mid-life, (as) her personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. (She) juggles the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family, appeals by her PEI clan for advice and assistance - everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties. There are also triumphs and trials more closely related to her position as a best-selling author: growing fame, the successful midwifery of her new heroines 'Emily' and 'Marigold' and a more adult novel, 'The Blue Castle'; the struggle to allocate time for correspondence with publishers, fans, pen-friends - and actually to 'write'. We trace the happy conclusion of her lawsuits against an unscrupulous publisher, and the disappointing outcome of the tempest-in-a-teapot suit arising from a minor automobile accident. There are more personal worries: the Rev. Ewan Macdonald's envy of his wife's publishing and social success; the dark shadow cast by his recurrent attacks of religious melancholia; her concern lest their sons evince similar tendencies. In mid-decade, Ewan Macdonald accepts a call to Norval, Ontario and Montgomery leaves 'dear Leaskdale' with mixed feelings. In these years, LMM turns more and more to her journal to record insights and opinions not voiceable by 'the angel of the house', as well as the brief epiphanies of delight in nature's beauty that have always sustained her. Her journal is an important example of life-writing - writing in the autobiographical mode - by a complex, sensitive, successful, and suprisingly contemporary writer." Minor bumping/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, scattered very tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing.

131 Rutherford, Ward. HITLER'S PROPAGANDA MACHINE
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1978 0448146274 / 9780448146270 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
192 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions. "Paul Joseph Goebbels, Hitler's Minister of Propaganda and Public Entertainment, refined the use of what he called the Big Lie to a fine art. Democracy was portrayed as evil, dictatorship as good. Books which did not conform with Nazi ideology were burned; radio broadcasts were made with the intention of cowing the German populace and frightening the peoples of the world. Mass rallies were staged in Berlin, Nuremberg and elsewhere to whip up enthusiasm for the military expansion of Germany and hysteria for the Third Reich and the Fuhrer. Magazines and newspapers played their role in a more subtle way, emphasizing Nazi triumphs and minimizing or obliterating criticism of the regime and its failures. Colorful posters were put up throughout Germany. Later the Nazis enlisted the support of other Europeans in the pan-German cause. All of these propaganda techniques were master-minded by Goebbels, whose genius in orchestrating propaganda in the mass media was acknowledged even by his enemies. In films, magazines, posters, rallies and speeches by Hitler and his followers, Goebbels developed a propaganda mechanism that has been copied by dozens of dictators since but never equalled in its cynicism and fury." Book is slightly cocked, has light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning to edges of text block, light cigarette odor. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, browning at edges, light edge wrinkling, creasing at top 4" of front hinge, light rubbing.

DOCTOR OLDS OF TWILLINGATE: PORTRAIT OF AN AMERICAN SURGEON IN NEWFOUNDLAND., Saunders, Gary L.
132 Saunders, Gary L. DOCTOR OLDS OF TWILLINGATE: PORTRAIT OF AN AMERICAN SURGEON IN NEWFOUNDLAND.
St. John's, Newfoundland Breakwater 1997 1550810928 / 9781550810929 Third Printing Soft Cover with Self Flaps Very Good+
367 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, illustrations. "John Olds grew up in Connecticut, sailed on Long Island Sound, played polo for Yale and went to medical school at Johns Hopkins. As a third year medical student he went on a summer's adventure to an unheard of hospital in the equally obscure town of Twillingate in Newfoundland, at that time Great Britain's oldest colony. The summer's experience was offered to Hopkins students, as an elective, to show them medicine as practiced outside the metropolitan centers. It also gave them more hands-on experience than medical school could offer to a junior student. Most came for the summer and then relegated to memory their novel experience with the hospitable, gentle people, the chance to do deliveries and appendectomies, and the rustic maritime beauty of the place. (John Olds) liked it so well that upon graduation in 1932 he returned, bringing (his wife), whom he had met there in 1930 as a Hopkins nursing student. They decided to stay a year; the year turned into their lifetimes." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, light rubbing, small crease at bottom corner of front cover.

PEREGRINE FALCONS., Savage, Candace. Foreword by Adrian Forsyth.
133 Savage, Candace. Foreword by Adrian Forsyth. PEREGRINE FALCONS.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1992 1550540106 / 9781550540109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
145 pp, 12 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs of peregrine falcons, their habitats, nests, eggs, and young provided by 35 of the world's best-known wildlife photographers and falcon researchers. "(T)he peregrine's recent history holds a cautionary tale: in the 1950s and 1960s, these magnificent birds were nearly wiped out when their food chain was contaminated with pesticides, primarily DDT. (Fortunately) they were saved from extinction with the help of a multimillion dollar recovery program. The peregrine is on the wing again throughout much of its range. But as the author warns, we still have not roused ourselves to face the real enemy. DDT and other persistent pesticides continue to be manufactured and exported to the Third World, and the chemical compounds currently used in Western countries may be almost as deadly. We must change agricultural practices on a global scale, Savage argues; only then will we be heeding the message of hope the falcon has long been empowered to bring." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
