"In this carefully structured explanatory volume, the author charts the history of the defence of Britain and the threats it has faced, befo re discussing the constituents of home defence policy, from the role of the armed forces, reservist units, police and local government, to the warning and monitory systems available, the means by which key points would be protected and the t r a i n i n g undertaken by those involved to maintain a state of readiness. As we enter an era where many previously perceived threats are thought to be reducing, the need for vigilance and preparation has not yet been removed. Whether, as has b ee n pr op os ed , f uture home defence practices become interwoven with an all hazards approach to the subject - where defence facilities could switch to non military emergencies and disasters - or the status quo is maintained, the protection of th e c ou ntr y a nd its p eo ple should be studied outside the boundaries of political debate and beyond biased viewpoints. WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE., Dillon, Richard.
134 Dillon, Richard. WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY. OLIVER HAZARD PERRY: WILDERNESS COMMODORE.
McGraw-Hill, New York, 1978.
231 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070169870 Map. "Perry fought perhaps the most perfect single battle in American naval history. More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." Osceola, WI Motorbooks 1988 0879382864 / 9780879382865 First Edition Very Good Very Good -
128 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H). "The enemies were numerous. The jungle heat and the broad sea, the North Vietnamese Air Force and their arch ace Colonel Tomb, the MiG-17s and MiG-21s. Points on the American side were our elite pilots, aircraft and weapons: the Thunderchiefs, Crusaders and, of course, Phantoms. The air battles of the Vietnam War were fierce; the victors earned their wings and the kill markings emblazoned on their planes. (This book) spotlights the duels between America's pilots and the MiGs in the skies over Southeast Asia. Most of all, this is a book about airplanes. Here are the Phantoms Colonel Robin Olds piloted to score four kills. The intrepid Skyhawk which downed a MiG-17 with an unguided air-to-ground missile. And F-4 number 155880 which finally blew Hanoi's Colonel Tomb out of the sky, earning its pilot ace status. Here are the men and machines that flew Rolling Thunder and Linebacker I and II. Military expert Robert F. Dorr has collected a superb gallery of glowing color photos - many of them contemporary - and written a detailed history, chock full of anecdotes." Dust jacket has a few tiny dints on front panel, very small closed puncture on front hinge, very light rubbing, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wrinkling.
