Duke University Press, Durham, North Carolina, 1968, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "A considerable amount of our literary and social criticism has been based on the premise that during much of our history the United States has been inhospitable to the intellectual and the a rtist. The term 'exile' has been used frequently and Henry James has been pictured as the prime victim. The present study is a detailed examination of a selected number of representative writers, artists, and intellectuals who spent a con s i d e r a b l e amount of time abroad. Its purpose is to determine the extent to which they were 'exiled', and especially to learn what they had to say about the contrast between the American and European scenes....Those discussed are Irving, Ti ck no r, B an cr of t, C ogswell, Cooper, Morse, Greenough, Powers, Allston, Story, Fuller, Hawthorne, James, Frederic, and Wharton. In a special chapter devoted to the unique problems of the expatriates of the 1920's, such figures as Stein, Hemi ngw ay, Cr owl ey, Fi tzg era ld, and the Crosbys are included...." 134 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

115 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "....the history and glories of the Vatican and the highlights of the pilgrim's visit to Rome are dramatically presented. Since the proc lamation of the first Jubilee in 1300, Holy Years have called thousands of faithful to the Eternal City; the pilgrims of 1950 follow an ancient religious tradition. Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world, is fully descr i b e d - i t s wealth of art treasures, its colorful guards' corps, and its architectural masterpieces. The ancient and modern glories of the Basilica of St. Peter are inspiring examples of faith and religious veneration. In the historical acc ou nt o f t he Po pe s, nearly two thousand years of Papal sovereignty unfolds, with strands intimately affecting the nations and peoples of the world. This volume contains photographs of the 1950 Holy Year ceremonies and the opening of the Holy Do or of St . Pet e r's by Po pe Pius XII on Christmas Eve, 1949. It is a book for all those who are interested in Holy Year - for those who participate in the ceremonies at home as well as for those who are making the pilgrimage to Rome." 137 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.
