HEROINES OF MERCY STREET: THE REAL NURSES OF THE CIVIL WAR., Toler, Pamela D.
122 Toler, Pamela D. HEROINES OF MERCY STREET: THE REAL NURSES OF THE CIVIL WAR.
New York Little Brown 2016 0316392073 / 9780316392075 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
287 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. Companion volume to the PBS series "Mercy Street". "The nurses of the Civil War ushered in a new era for medicine in the midst of tremendous hardship. While (America) was at war, these women learned to advocate and care for patients in hostile settings, saved countless lives, and changed the profession forever. They regularly fell ill with no one to nurse them in return, seethed in anger at the indifference and inefficiency that left wounded men on the battlefield without care, and all too often mourned for those they could not rescue. (This book) tells the true stories of the nurses at Mansion House, the Alexandria, Virginia, hotel turned wartime hospital. Women like Dorothea Dix, Mary Phinney, and Anne Reading rushed to be of service to their country during the war, meeting challenges every step of the way that would discourage less determined souls. They saw casualties on a scale Americans had never seen before; diseases like typhoid and dysentery were rampant; and working conditions were abysmal - both physically and emotionally. Drawing on the diaries, letters, and books written by these nursing pioneers, (the author) has created a fascinating portrait of true heroines, shining a light on their personal contributions during one of (America's) most turbulent periods." Very small ink remainder mark on top of text block. Dust jacket has a very small soft corner crease at top of front flap.

AUGUST 1914., Tuchman, Barbara W.
126 Tuchman, Barbara W. AUGUST 1914.
London Constable 1962 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
499 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Map endpapers, b&w plates, maps. "It is not too much to say that the first thirty days of battle determined the future course of the First World War, the terms of the peace and the shape of the nations of our time. The bloody catalogue of the battles of August 1914 contains the almost legendary names of Liege, Mons, the Battle of the Frontiers, Charleroi, and Tannenberg, where generals' reputations were made or broken, and opportunities grasped or missed. Here is the indomitable Joffre rebuilding his shattered armies, Samsonov committing suicide after the annihilation of his army at Tannenberg (a staggering defeat that, perhaps, gave victory to Russia's allies), von Kluck stubbornly committed to his fatal mistake with Paris within his grasp, and Admiral Souchon in the 'Goeben' setting his desperate and fateful course for Constantinople. Here is Sir John French steadfastly refusing to work with his French ally, the brilliant Lanrezac 'limoge', perhaps, for being right too often, the sick Gallieni resolutely preparing the defence of Paris; and Winston Churchill, 'the only British minister to have a perfectly clear conviction of what Britain should do', acting upon his conviction without hesitation. The story begins with a brilliant and majestic set piece describing the funeral of Edward VII, which was attended by all the royalty, nobility and aristocracy of Europe, and marked the end of a splendid era. The reader is then swept into the magnificent narrative: firstly of the plans of the German, French, British and Russian General Staffs, all prepared some ten years before the war, none allowing for the contingencies of others; then of the tense and dramatic hours and minutes in Berlin, Paris, London and St. Petersburg that led to the outbreak of war; and finally of the invasion of Belgium, the advance through France according to plan, and the huge clash on the Eastern front. The narrative ends on the eve of the Battle of the Marne which just saved the war from being won by Germany. By that time the original plans of all the belligerents were in ruins." Book is slightly curved, minor edge wear, slight fading to colour on top of spine, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, several small and tiny edge tears, light browning on spine and flap-folds/edges, light soiling.

171 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. "Paris welcomed Gerald Murphy, whose billboard-sized cubist icon dominated the 1924 Salon des Independants and launched a brief but brilliant career; Stuart Davis, who explored the continuity between cubist painting, lithography, and jazz at the atelier Desjobert,; Man Ray, who abandoned oils to begin 'painting with light' in his movies and rayographs; and Alexander Calder, whose wire circuses and portraits inspired critics to acknowledge art's inherent playfulness. (This book) documents the work and influence of these four notables of the avant-garde who startle and delight us even today...Richly illustrated and beautifully designed, this volume is a feast for the eyes and the intellect. It is published on the occasion of the exhibition...organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C. America's first modern art museum." JACK SHADBOLT., Watson, Scott. (Jack Shadbolt.)
135 Watson, Scott. (Jack Shadbolt.) JACK SHADBOLT.
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1990 0888946139 / 9780888946133 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Jack Shadbolt.
243 pp, 12 1/2" H. "In this first full study of the renowned (Canadian) painter, Scott Watson explores Shadbolt's personal struggles to be an artist and to resolve conflicting drives - between spontaneity and restraint, order and chaos - in the context of shifting trends in art as well as social change. Shadbolt also struggled to be understood in a culture that, when he began, was not ready for modern art. From (his) early love of nature and awakening artistic sensibilities to his coming of age while studying in New York, London and Paris, Watson explores the evolution of an artist who has an international perspective but who is also a unique regional painter with a profound sense of place. In chronicling Shadbolt's development, the author has created a portait that gives an insightful look at the nature of the artistic sensibility, enriched with liberal excepts from the painter's own writings on art and the life of the artist. Lavishly illustrated with the art of Jack Shadbolt - 220 illustrations, including 110 in colour." Tiny dent on rear board and on fore-edge of front board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has bery light rubbing.
