BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
122 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." LOUIS WAIN'S CATS., Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton.
123 Beetles, Chris. With contributions from Rodney Dale and David Wootton. LOUIS WAIN'S CATS.
Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." Dust jacket has tiny wrinkles at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few slight wrinkles on front flap

(This book), printed and bound in roughly the size and format of the originals, features artwork and anecdotes from more than a dozen log books kept by U.S. Army Air Force pilots and crewmen held prisoner in German camps during WWII. Adventure, boredom, laughter, horror, and courage fill these pages. (It) provides a unique look into a chapter of history that should never be forgotten and will inspire us all." THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
128 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 326 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802047149 B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings, plans, elevations. "St James' Cathedral can justly be called the Mother Church of the city of Toronto as well as of the Anglican diocese centred there. Its congregation perpetuates one that began worshipping in Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe's tent at the very founding of the town of York in 1793. Its grounds were set aside for a place of worship in 1797, and the wooden church tha t o p ened there ten years later was the first to be built in the town. Four successive Anglican churches have stood on this site, which is now in the heart of downtown Toronto. This history, commissioned as part of St James' 200th-anniversary ce le b ra ti ons in 1996-7, represents a collaboration by seven respected amateur and professional historians. It is lavishly illustrated with over one hundred pictures from the cathedral's own archives and the holdings of other institutions, as well as e igh t p ages of specially commissioned colour plates. Alongside a general history of the church as both parish and cathedral and its ministry to the community through two centuries, there are chapters specially treating the architecture of t he s ucc essi ve b uildings and the development of St James' renowned music and liturgy. This book will appeal not only to students of religious, cultural, and architectural history but to all who take an interest in Toronto's heritage, and Canada' s." 310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." Parti de La Nouvelle-Orleans, le jazz conquiert l'Amerique. Bientot, la folie du swing fait danser le monde entier. Pourtant, derriere les apparences du divertissement grandit un art majeur. Mais, a la suite de John Coltrane et Bill Evans, d'autres horizons s'ouvrent aux jazzmen du mond entier. Le jazz rock, ne des enfants de Miles Davis, engendre un certain besoin d'espace. MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953., Berton, Pierre.
136 Berton, Pierre. MARCHING AS TO WAR: CANADA'S TURBULENT YEARS, 1899-1953.
Doubleday Canada 2001 0385257252 / 9780385257251 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
632 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "The first war of the century, which took Canadian soldiers to South Africa, and the last, which sent them to Korea, bracket the tumultuous years of the (20th) century's first half like bookends on the shelf of history. They have a good deal in common, these two minor conflicts, whose chronicles pale when compared to the bloodbaths of the two world wars. Canada's wartime days are long past, and for many, the scars of war have healed. Vimy has been manicured clean, its pockmarked slopes softened by a green mantle of Canadian pines. Dieppe has reverted to a resort town, its beaches long since washed free of Canadian blood. Now a days, Canadians are proud of their role as Peacekeepers, from which they have gained a modicum of the international acclaim the nation has always craved, with precious little blood wasted in the process. In this monumental work, Pierre Berton brings Canadian history to life once again, relying on a host of sources, including newspaper accounts and first-hand reports, to tell the story of these four wars through the eyes of the privates in the trenches, the generals at the front, and the politicians and families back home. By profiling the interwar years, Berton traces how one war led to the next, and how the country was changed in the process. Illustrated with maps and line drawings, 'Marching as to War' describes how the experience of war helped to bind Canada together as a nation and chronicles the transformation of Canada's dependence upon Great Britain and its slow emergence as an independent nation caught in a love-hate relationship with the United States." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling and very minor rubbing.

But where could they ever find a teacher who knew so many things? Finally it was decided that the only one with so much knowledge was - a cat!....(Thoug h Barnac, Squire of Catnap,) was willing to teach the boy, he insisted that Johnny must also learn to think for himself. And so one morning, when a drop of water splashed on Johnny's book, he soon reasoned where it came from - the ceiling . A n d t h e splash of water was a tear. This tear, though Johnny did not at first realize it, was the beginning of another exciting quest. For Phoebe the Spider was crying because he had lost a treasure, the Magic Hat.
