246 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs. "Both Chadwick and the author lived through the same contemporary events, so this biography of the great Avro designer not only deals with aircraft evolution but reflects the atmosphere of those days. No sooner was one design under way than Roy Chadwick was imagining the next and the next, totalling some two hundred. They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. In a swift moving story Penrose depicts Chadwick's career through the changing years from the early revelation of flight to his 54th year when he initiated design of the futuristic Delta-Winged Vulcan, ending with his tragic death in the crash of the Avro Tudor II airliner in 1947." Light wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at bottom of spine and at bottom corner of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dint on front hinge and rear hinge.

HEROES & AEROPLANES OF THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918., Phelan, Joseph A. Foreword by Sir Thomas Sopwith.
129 Phelan, Joseph A. Foreword by Sir Thomas Sopwith. HEROES & AEROPLANES OF THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918.
New York Grosset & Dunlap 1970 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Joseph A. Phelan.
128 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w drawings. "(A) vivid pictorial presentation of (aerial) warfare from the first use of aircraft in war - Italian reconnaissance against the Ottoman Empire in 1912 - to the Armistice in 1918. In striking color the great individual battles of the aces come alive: Immelman, von Richthofen, Voss and Boelcke; Bishop, Collishaw, McCudden, Ball and Beauchamp-Proctor; Rickenbacker; Guynemer, Nungesser and Garros. And the dogfights and sorties; Bloody April and the Fokker Scourge; the Lafayette Escadrille, the Storks, the Flying Circuses; the bombing raids; the balloon busters. The trials of combat and endurance and the men and aero-planes that made it all possible, changing the world's thinking about the methods of war. J.A. Phelan has created more than 400 superb paintings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticu-lous detail of the artist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allies and Central Powers are shown in detail (top and side views, camouflage, national markings and pilots' decorations, engines, armament and structure) and in combat as they were flown by the aces. This volume presents an unduplicated view of the 1914-1918 war in the air, when man first captured control of the sky in order to control the ground." A few tiny tape marks from previous protective sleeve at corners of endpapers, scattered tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, one slight corner bump. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge.

CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS., Pickler, Ron and Milberry, Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown.
130 Pickler, Ron and Milberry, Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown. CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS.
CANAV, Toronto, 1995.
392 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921022077 "(T)ells the story of a company that started as a 'bucket shop' producing aircraft designed by other manufacturers and ended as a world leader in the design and manufacture of bus iness jets and re gional airliners. (The book) goes back to the company's roots. In the 1920s its predecessor, Canadian Vickers, built some of Canada's first bush planes. Then comes the Second World War, when Canso patrol planes were built u n d e r licence. At war's end, a group of entrepreneurs took over the plant just as production dropped to zero. They formed Canadair, which cornered the market on reconditioned C-47s (DC-3s), while developing the North Star, Canada's first mod er n ai rl in e r. In 1947 Canadai r was purchased by an American firm, the Electric Boat Company. This brought Canadair into the jet age with the mass productin of fighters and trainers, and gave Electric Boat the revenue needed to form General D yna mi cs. T he bo ok tells how unfortu nate timing prevented two innovative products, the CL-44 and the CL-84, from possibly thrusting Canadair into the ranks of the major international aircraft manufacturers. It describes, too, how the terminat ion of mili tary pr ogr ams like the F-104 fo rced Canadair to diversify into new fields. This led to two successful programs, the CL-215 waterbomber and the CL-89 surveillance drone. The threat of plant closure during the recession of the early 1970 s p rompt ed Ot tawa to buy Canadair. So bega n (its) most controversial era, that of the Challenger business jets. From early excitement and optimism, through delays, disappointments, criticism and eventual government bail-out, to worldwide accl aim, the d etails are all here. The final chapte rs describe the exciting developments at Canadair since the acquisition by Bombardier and outline its strategy for a bright future. Besides detailed text and hundreds of photos, (the book) i nclude s an appendi x with three -vie ws, lists of products, s tudies, first flights, awards, etc. - more than enough data to satisfy the most demanding aviation 'buff'." Very small bump to bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkli ng at bottom of flap -folds . Ve ry Good+/Near Fine

Enemy or ally, they were accorded the same honor s by an admiring world. This unique anthology records the personal experiences of these first airborne fighters. 24 pp, 11 5/8" H, soft cover (stapled in wraps). ISBN 0948414111 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings/plans, colour profiles. "The Pfalz fighters were very rugged and able to absorb a fair amount of combat damage due to their method of construction, although the advantages of the wooden semi-monocoque fuselage were offset by the weight penalties incurred which attenuated the machine's performance. Whilst exellent in a dive and providing the pilot with a stable gun platform, the Pfalz was rather slow to climb and lacked the manoevrability of most other contemporary fighters. (T)he publishers have endeavoured to provide as many 'fresh' illustrations of the subject aeroplane as possible and the contents of t h i s book are particularly rich in these although a small number of well-known portraits, showing more colourfully-marked examples, have been included for balance. Initiation with this 'Datafile' of extra pages to include contemporary sketches f ro m or iginal technical publications is intended to provide enthusiasts and modellers with the kind of detail not always evident from study of photographs alone nor practical to include on scale drawings." Interior - clean and tight with no prev io us ow ner ship marks. Exterior - tiny soft corner creases. Very Good+
