GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND., Dyhouse, Carol.
121 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to r e i n f o r c e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures a nd a d ec li ni ng b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century wit h i ts edu cat ion al imp lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bott om o f s pine and fla p-f olds , fa din g to spine color - lettering very legible, blank label on front flap, minor rubbing. 122 Edmond, Lauris. BONFIRES IN THE RAIN.
Bridget Williams, (Wellington, 1991).
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photographs. The second volume of New Zealand poet Lauris Edmond's autobiography. "For Lauris Edmond this was married life in its time of greatest fulfilment, with six children in a small New Zealand country town in the fifties. They were rich years, full of laughter and friendship and solidity - the way, she supposed, women's lives were meant to be. But dreams and expectations change, the experiences of loss and uncertainty impinge, and as the sixties became the seventies the world shifted on its axis. Women everywhere were questioning the old, familiar loyalties; for Lauris there was no ignoring the promptings of a talent - and a way of being - too long supressed...the remarkable account of a woman's journey from conformity to a tentative and painful independence; of the growth and death of a marriage, and the questioning and discovery of self. Eloquent and assured, this is autobiography at its most revealing, and confirms Lauris Edmonds as an outstanding prose writer." Interior - slight waviness to top of approx. pages 170 - 225, previous owners name on inside of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, two soft creases on front cover, book slightly cocked, spine uncreased. VG-

New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." 239 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "In 1872, Irish-born, seventeen-year-old Henry Ross Halpin arrived in Fort Garry, Manitoba, to take up a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt. Born into a family of journalists, he was a great storyteller and astute observer. His memoirs of his life in the fur trade and of his captivity, combined with his correspondence and annual reports to the Department of Indian Affairs, offer a rare glimpse of life during these turbulent times of change in the West." 128 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

131 Farmer, Penelope, ed. SISTERS: AN ANTHOLOGY.
London Allen Lane / Penguin Press 1999 0713993022 / 9780713993028 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from childhood, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the theatrical and musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; the Schlegel sisters; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Richard Dawkins through the genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of sisterhood constructed around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book. Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthroplogy , Penelope Farmer pieces together the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to have had them." Slight bump to top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on spine.

Toronto University of Toronto Press 1983 0802055842 / 9780802055842 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good George Heriot.
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. "George Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, is best known as a skilled landscape watercolourist and as the contentious deputy postmaster general of British North America from 1800 to 1816. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." McLaren, Russell, Ont., dated August 21st., 1917. In it, he mentions writing 'The Trail of Love', his family, the start of his lumber operations in Muskoka and his distress that, during the current war, people seem less respectful of the Sabbath day. From the Foreword: "It was my good fortune to be born of parents who hewed their home out of the Canadian wilderness, and to spend my early years among the pioneers of Wentworth and Halton Counties in the Province of Ontario, the simplicity and honesty of whose lives has been steadfastly engraved upon my memory. As a result, it is perhaps only natural that a most persistent call has come to me to record in a way that will be imperishable a few of the virtues of these honest and upright lives."
