121 Graves, Dianne. (John McCrae.) A CROWN OF LIFE: THE WORLD OF JOHN McCRAE.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1997 15506809149 First Edition Fine Very Good+
300 pp, lg.8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w maps, drawings, photographs. "Born in Canada, (John) McCrae served in the South African War before carving out a career as an eminent doctor. Set against a background of nearly half a century of history, (the author) brings alive in fascinating detail John McCrae and his world - amongst them Rudyard Kipling, Leo Amery, Sir Alexander Fleming, and Stephen Leacock; the threads that linked their lives; and the story of four people who, after the war, were instrumental in the events that led to poppies being manufactured and sold to raise funds." London Macdonald 1958 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
63 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "There is hardly a more remarkable period in modern British politics, or in the history of the press, than those years when the big newspaper lords determined the attitude of governments and even the most important decisions. Viscounts Northcliffe and Rothermere, Barons Riddell and Dalziel are dead. Baron Beaverbrook, who was a factor in major decisions in the first and second world wars, is still active, and still a power in Britain. This short book is a revealing account of this period and of the life and personality of Lord Beaverbrook, and gains point and interest from the fact that its author is a Parliamentarian widely known for his contribution to international affairs." Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear, small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few edge creases, light browning on inside of spine and flap-folds.

London Century 2011 1846058139 / 9781846058134 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT., Harvey, John H.
130 Harvey, John H. HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT.
London B.T. Batsford 1946 Second Edition Good Fair
86 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, floor plans, colour frontispiece. "Henry Yevele's life ranged roughly from 1320 to 1400, a period during which the architectural experiments of the previous century gradually became crystallised in the enduring national style which, for want of a better term, the textbooks call 'Perpendicular'. At the time of his apprenticeship, the new fashion had been devised, but not mastered, and many patrons of art must have been reluctant to find money for costly experiements, so long as the final effect was in doubt. Only the appearance of Perpendicular masterpieces would be convincing; and for the making of masterpieces the first requisite is a master. The master, a truly great one, was at hand, and his name was Henry Yevele. This book, which brilliantly surveys one of the greatest periods of architectural achievement in the history of our race, is the first full-length biography of an English architect of the Middle Ages. With a wealth of detail and a balanced critical insight, John Harvey convinces us that, throughout the period, Yevele was giving to English architecture a unity and strength comparable to the qualities with which his friend, Chaucer, was endowing our language. It includes a great deal of recent research never before brought together, and is richly illustrated with plans and details, and by views of the work of Yevele and his contemporaries." A few very small foxing marks on pastedowns, two sharp creases down the front free endpaper - very soft impression of creases up to page x, tiny dent at bottom edge of boards, slight fading to spine and hinge color and also at top edge of boards, ver light edge wear/soiling. Dust jacket has pieces missing at topand bottom of spine, edge creases, several small edge tears and very small chips, some light browning, some soiling on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

133 Hawkey, Arthur BLACK NIGHT OFF FINISTERRE: THE TRAGIC TALE OF AN EARLY BRITISH IRONCLAD
Shrewsbury Airlife 1999 1840370955 / 9781840370959 First Edition Very Good Very Good
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, drawings, map. "This is the definitive account of the loss of HMS Captain and the decade-long public controversy in parliament and the press which preceded and led to the building of the ship in unprecedented circumstances. HMS Captain was a very important vessel because she was the first sea-going turret warship built to provide all-round fire power. She was the first in a line of innovative designs heralding the great development of warships that reached its peak before World War Two. The lengthy controversy involved a row between Captain Cowper Phipps Coles, RN, the designer of Captain and inventor of the turntable turret gun for warships, and the Admiralty Constructor, Edward Reed, who regarded the design of the vessel as potentially dangerous. Each had his supporters, and the Admiralty made a fatal compromise, for on the night of 6/7 September 1870, only four months after being commissioned, the new ship capsized in a gale off Finisterre and sank immediately. The death toll of British seamen was greater than at the Battle of Trafalgar. (The author) has previously written on the ship and the tragedy, but he has recently discovered new and previously unknown information that changes history in relation to the loss of the ship - information that appears to have been suppressed at the court martial of the 18 surviviors." Two minor corner bumps, minor bump on fore-edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jackect has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing.

136 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.

Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..
