CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM., Duval, Paul.
122 Duval, Paul. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1990 0771029650 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
166 pp, square 4to (11 3/4" H). "This beautiful volume, full of the light and colour that characterize most Impressionist art, is a thoroughly enjoyable guide to Canadian Impressionist painting from roughly 1885 to 1920. It brings together, for the first time in book form, the Canadian representatives of the world's most popular and accessible school of painting, offering a totally fresh look at a now-vanished society, and presenting a strong contrast to the isolated, unpopulated vision of the country usually portrayed by the Group of Seven - although members of that group are represented in their earlier, more intimate styles. 'Canadian Impressionism' conveys a vivid cross-section of the subject, including many paintings that have never before been reproduced. The work of neglected artists such as Helen McNicoll, Frank Armington, John S. Gordon, John Russell, and William Clapp is featured among the seventy full-colour plates, alongside the more familiar talents of J.W. Morrice, Paul Peel, Lawren Harris, Maurice Cullen, and A.Y. Jackson. (A) revelation and a delight, showing as it does a charming side of Canadian art that has not, until now, received the attention that it deserves." Light toning to edges of pages/text block, waviness to top/bottom edges of text block, several very small dents at bottom edge of boards, a few small shallow dents on fore-edge of boards, several very light stains on boards. Dust jacket has minor waviness at top/bottom edges, very light toning at top/bottom inside edges, sharp crease down rear hinge

123 Eayrs, James. NORTHERN APPROACHES: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR PEACE.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
195 pp, 8 3/4" H. "A brilliant intelligence is brought to bear on the vital issues of Canadian defence and foreign policy, on Canada's relations with the U.S. and the British Commonwealth and the Communist bloc. Canadians do not always look at these problems in the same way as their North American neighbours. This book considers the Canadian 'style' in approaching such questions. (Discusses) difficult and frightening issues such as the location of the Great Deterrent, the acquisition of nuclear weaons, the fate of the Avro Arrow, civil defence. (Eayrs) examines the 'Nostrum of Neutralism' and while he concedes its appeal, concludes that the arguments in its favour are not valid at present. Commonwealth concerns, the monarchy, America's ill-fated intervention in Cuba, the role of the United Nations, the non-recognition of Communist China - all these questions and others of the kind are fearlessly and realistically discussed." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has beem price-clipped, has very light soiling/rubbing, light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny edge tears archivally taped.

New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

John Erskine (1879-1951) taught at Columbia University from 1909-1937 and used it as the background for this novel about "the 'new' younger generation", which was made into a film in the year it was published. "What happens when you're a freshman and you want to marry the loveliest girl in the world (also a freshman) but have only $4.21 to last out the month? What Alec does is to take Mimi to breakfast - and put off the wedding for the next check from home. But in time the checks from home stop coming. Alec discovers there is a personal depression. He must pay his way through. By unanimous protest of his fraternity, he is forced to give up the saxophone and he takes on dishwashing for a livelihood. While a substitute waiter he suffers a terrible blow to his pride. Gladys, the college widow, 1934 model, gets him in an awful jam. Tragedy touches him closely in disasters nobly borne by student and faculty friends. Gradually a courage shows through that is more than youthful rebellion, a fineness that is not cocksure. Alec begins to grow up." Viking Studio, New York, 1995, first edition.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670860441 "The most important historical event of the 20th century was a war that seemed to be fought in black-and-white. Our collective memory of the years 1941-1945 exists in monochrome, because that was the way most of us saw it - and continue to see it - in the films and still pictures of the day. Color film for motion pictures and still cameras was readily available then, but was not in wide use because of its fragility and t h e difficulties of developing it. But there were enough hardy photographic pioneers around in 1941 to take the new color film to war, and their pictures, surviving beautifully to this day, show us a very different world than the one we see in o ld n ew sreels. At first glance these images are a bit startling; we are not used to seeing the people, places, and events of the early 1940s in living color. But in due time these pictures seem utterly right, and in fact bring World War II int o mor e r eco gnizable form, more comfortable for modern eyes. Here, then, is a colorful recollection of World War II in over 200 photographs taken, for the most part, by amateur lensmen - ordinary soldiers, sailors, and airmen who wanted to record a nd p rese rve their time in the largest conflict in world history." Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing. Fine/Near Fine

188 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "This fascinating story of the life of one 'ordinary' Canadian is social history at its best - a first hand account of the home life, entertainment, working conditions and methods, manners and morals of past generations. Born in London, Ontario in 1888, S.J. Ferns left school at age 13 to throw himself into the struggle for existence. He describes the Harvester's Special trains, the work of threshing gangs in the Weset, his apprenticeship as a bricklayer, and his subsequent travels around a young and growing country to find work. Many of the events which have become significant historically - Calgary's first Stampede, Alberta's first oil strike, the opening of Detroit's first Ford plant - gain new meaning when seen through the eyes of one who had some personal involvement or was personally affected by them." Very light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, two tiny edge tears archivally taped.

Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D) soft cover. ISBN 1550022008 B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toron to and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang u p a cross the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toront o Ar c hi ves, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary c ha nge . Th e century was on the move and Toronto was moving with it. The photographers showcased in the book (William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Goss, and Frank W. Micklethwaite) were also breaking new ground, turning away from the formality of the st udio to capture the city in transition, thereby establishing a permanent record - one that we can enjoy today." It tells the fascinating story of how downtown - and the way Americans thought about downtown - changed over time. By showing how businessmen and property owners worked to promote the well-being of downtown, even at the expense of other parts of the city, it also gives a riveting account of spatial politics in urban America. Drawing on a wide array of contemporary sources, (the author) brings downtown to life, first as 'the' business district, then as the central business district. His book vividly recreates the long-forgotten battles over subways an d skyscrapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
