"A carefully planned and beautifully illustrated history of the Royal Navy and its origins from the time of King Al fred to the present day - a panoramic view of the ships, seamen, organisation and fighting records of the unique force that for a thousand years has stood between England and her foes. As the Falklands Task Force has recently demonstrated, t h e R o y a l Navy of today is capable of operating efficiently and effectively wherever it is required. In its history there have been many lengthy periods when this has been brilliantly demonstrated, notably in the time of Queen Elizabeth I, dur in g t he N ap ol eonic Wars and during large parts of the First and Second World Wars. Yet there have also been times when governmental cheese-paring, faulty design criteria, service squabbles or an unwillingness by those in charge to accept new ide as - su ch as ste am power or the vital importance of air cover - have resulted in appalling temporary reverses only compensated for, in the long run, by the determination, skill and discipline of the crews of the Navy's fighting ships. Both side s o f t his his tor y, t he successes and the failures, are dealt with fully and frankly." Minor browning to edges of text block, slight fading to top/bottom edges of boards, crease/fold with small piece missing on rear pastedown. Dust jacket has has been pri ce-c lipp ed, h as very light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-fold, small area of surface paper loss at top of front flap-fold, very light edge browning. THE GLORIOUS FIRST OF JUNE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES., Warner, Oliver.
125 Warner, Oliver. THE GLORIOUS FIRST OF JUNE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
New York Macmillan 1961 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
184 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "The Glorious First of June, 1794, the first full-scale naval battle in the war with Revolutionary France, is remembered with honour, even though, strategically, it was not successful. Lord Howe defeated Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse, took six ships of the line, and sank 'Le Vengeur', without losing a single British ship, but a precious convoy, the cause of the action, reached France in safety. Although French sacrifice had not been in vain, Howe had shown that, in general combat, the British navy was incomparable. (This) is the only extensive account of the fight, and of Lord Howe's methods as an admiral, to have been written during the past century. In an Epilogue, Mr. Warner considers the subject of Sovereign's honours and awards to the Royal Navy, which in a particular sense derived from royal recognition of Howe's victory. Mr. Warner at one time served as Secretary to the Admiralty Committee on awards in time of war, and his account is authoritative." Previous owner's small stamp on each of the front endpapers, very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
