"The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." "During the late summer of 1862, Confederate forces launched a three-pronged strategic advance into the North in both major theaters of t he war. The results of this offensive - the only coordinated Confederate attempt to carry the conflict to the enemy - were disastrous. In the eastern theater, Lee was forced out of Maryland after his defeat at Antietam, and in the West, Bra g g w a g e d a dismal campaign and had to retreat from Kentucky. The third prong of the Confederate offensive, the northern Mississippi campaign, culminated in devastating defeats at Iuka and Corinth that ultimately opened the way for Grant's cam pa ig n a ga in st Vicksburg. Peter Cozzens here presents the first book-length study of the battles of Iuka and Corinth...(and) details the tactical aspects of each battle, analyzing troop movements down to the regimental level. In addition to a v ivi d and de tai led battle narrative, Cozzens provides compelling portraits of the campaign's key leaders: Generals Grant, Rosecrans, Van Dorn, and Price. London Victor Gollancz 1972 0575013745 / 9780575013742 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
173 pp, 8" H. "Once again our detective is the charming and erudite Kate Fansler, professor of English Literature at an American university, aided by the New York assistant district attorney, Reed Amheart, who she has recently married. In an emergency she agrees to take on a senior seminar on 'Antigone' at her old school, the Theban. The central situation of the play, Antigone's determination to give token burial to her brother, in defiance of King Creon's edict, provides a challenge to which the girls at the Theban respond eagerly - a heroine defying to the death the tyranny of the State. And Kate soon finds herself deeply involved in today's confrontations and crises. But the crunch comes when a pupil's mother - a heart patient, and neurotic - is found dead in the school in the middle of the night. How did she get there? And why? And how did she die? Was she frightened to death by the guard dogs that patrol the building at night? Or was she brought to the school already a corpse? Reed offers himself as guinea pig to test the reactions of the terrifying Dobermans. And Kate skilfully probes the girls' reactions by judging their passionate responses to the Greek drama." Thorlakson - 'Doctor Thor' as he is affectionately known. There are of course many whose contributions in particular spheres were unsurpassed, but none whose vision was broader; none whose grasp of the import of social developments for medical practice was firmer; none whose ability to transform grand designs into reality was greater. The story of the life and career of Dr. Thor reveals much of the drive, tenacity and dynamism that animated this remarkable man; but for each of us whose life has been touched in some special way by him (this book) will bring to mind many personal recollections of the force of this personality'." THE MYTHIC WORLD OF THE ZUNI., Cushing, Frank Hamilton. Edited by Barton Wright.
111 Cushing, Frank Hamilton. Edited by Barton Wright. THE MYTHIC WORLD OF THE ZUNI.
Albuquerque University of New Mexico Press 1994 0826313876 / 9780826313874 Second Printing Soft Cover Very Good - Barton Wright.
167 pp, 10" H. B&w illustrations. "First recorded over a hundred years ago by Frank Hamilton Cushing (the first participant observer of a native American Indian population), these tales have remained buried in an 1891 Bureau of American Ethnology report. Barton Wright has collected twenty-five of them, edited them, and provided extensive annotation. He shows how each myth compares to its parallel among other pueblos, glosses native terms, and illustrates each story with excellent scratchboard drawings. Within the Zuni world of myth and legends lies tales of adventure, epic journeys, and tragedy, which relate history, teach moral values, explain ceremonies, and offer amusement as well. Representing just a sampling of what is available in Zuni oral tradition, these twenty-five myths present Zuni thought on the origins of the cosmos, the deities, the earth, and the all important food, corn. They explain social organization, the Kach'ina Cult, and the early wanderings of the Zuni or A'shiwi around the Southwest." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - small bump to bottom corner of front cover - migrates into pages, small crease at top corner of front cover, minor wear at bottom of spine.

Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." GOD'S PLOT & MAN'S STORIES: STUDIES IN THE FICTIONAL IMAGINATION FROM MILTON TO FIELDING., Damrosch, Leopold, Jr.
114 Damrosch, Leopold, Jr. GOD'S PLOT & MAN'S STORIES: STUDIES IN THE FICTIONAL IMAGINATION FROM MILTON TO FIELDING.
University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1985, first edition.
343 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0226135799 "Combining literary criticsm with psychology, sociology, and the history of ideas, (this book) offers a fresh approach to the often-asserted connection between Puritanism and the rise of the English novel. Its premise is that the Christian myth, far from serving as a simple, unified background to fiction, was paradoxical and full of potential conflicts, and that these were particularly vivid in the Puritan ima g i n a t i o n . The extraordinary power of Puritan psychology rests in the control it granted Providence over the individual. Yet as a basis for fiction, Puritanism confronted a paradox that is the central theme of Damrosch's study - the tensio n be tw ee n fi ct io ns that confess themselves to be fictional and the Puritan faith in human life as a narrative invented by God....Damrosch holds that the eighteenth-century novel was preeminently a novel of ideas, not simply illustrating or al lu din g t o i de as but te sti ng them and fighting with them. As such, individual masterpieces found unique solutions to shared cultural problems. They demand to be understood from within, even while an attempt is made to trace their historical de velo pmen t. Acc ord ingl y, D amro sch examines a series of major works in detail. After surveying Puritan ideas about the self, time, and language, he considers two very different modes of Puritan narrative: Milton's 'Paradise Lost' and Bunya n's autob iogra phy and all egori es. Damro sch then explores the transition to secular narrative in eloquent discussions of Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe', Richardson's 'Clarissa', and Fielding's 'Tom Jones'. A glance at Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy' co nclu des th e book , wi th re flect ions o n th e futu re of the novel in an age when providential pattern could no longer be asserted as synonymous with literary design." 1" faint line indentation on fore-edge of textblock. 116 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

There is a non-authorial inscription on the half title page from one couple to another, stating "Father De C. is a good friend of ours, we hope you enjoy his story". "This is (the story of 'The People Beyond'), occasionally poignant, often shocking, but always heroic, from the opening scene of birth in an isolated iglu lit only by a flickering blubber lamp to the final disaster wrought by an epidemic that rages through a whole encampment. Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives. He shared their quarters in iglu and tent, travelled with them on land and sea in the long winter and short summer, and took his full share in the skilled and unremitting labour of the hunt. Out of this experience comes an account of Eskimo life that will hold every reader fascinated." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear.
