Almark, London, (1976).
48 pp, 9" H, soft cover. B&w and color maps, b&w drawings, color uniform studies. ISBN 0855242582 "...a combined force of about 17,000 American and French troops under George Washington moved towards Yorktown where the 8,000 strong British and He ssian army was rapidly building up fortifications. Off Yorktown, the French fleet under De Grasse held off an attack by the British navy and thus isolated the British force in the garrison. As Cornwallis was expecting reinforcements from Clinton very soon, he withdrew to his inner defences, thus allowing the enemy siege artillery to get within range of his entire postion. Their bombardment was so successful that Cornwallis' situation quickly became desperate and, when no aid from Clinton arrived, sued for peace in October 1781. Although the War was not finally concluded until 1783, the surrender of Yorktown marked the twilight of the British in America." MONS 1914: THE BEF's TACTICAL TRIUMPH. OSPREY MILITARY CAMPAIGN SERIES 49., Lomas, David and Dovey, Ed.. General editor David G. Chandler.
120 Lomas, David and Dovey, Ed.. General editor David G. Chandler. MONS 1914: THE BEF's TACTICAL TRIUMPH. OSPREY MILITARY CAMPAIGN SERIES 49.
(Osprey, London, 1997).
96 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated in b&w and color with photos, maps, battle plans, drawings. "The first major clash of the Great War, Mons came as a nasty shock to the Imperial German Army. Assured by their command that they would sweep through the French and their British allies in the BEF - 'that contemptible little army', into the sea in a matter of weeks; they were stopped in their tracks at Mons by a numerically inferior British force. Eventually forced to fall back by overwhelming German numbers, the British carried out a masterful fighting retreat across Belgium and northern France." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign strategy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright, flat uncreased spine. NF
