Macmillan of Canada, Toronto, 1981, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771595549 "Meet Anne Graham, mother of three-year-old Martha and one-year-old Hugh, young, attractive, heavily pregnant - and alone. Things have not worked out at all the way Anne intended. Her teenage plans of marrying a rich Older Man who would put her through university were thwarted when Max, the first suitable candidate to come along, married Anne's mother, Billie, instead. Then her promising academic career was cut sh o r t w h e n her first real romance led to an unexpected pregnancy and an early marriage. Finally, and much more recently, her stable home life crumbled with her husband's announcement that he was leaving her to move into a commune with his secr et ar y. N ow s he is a housebound single mother of two and three-quarter children, whose intellectual life has shrunk to stolen moments of bedtime reading....The solution to her problem is clear to her friends and neighbours. She must find som eon e t o m i nd the ch ild r en and then go back to school or get at job. It's obvious. Or is it? Once again, Constance Beresford-Howe has approached a common theme from an uncommon point of view, with her own blend of perceptiveness and ironic hum our. But where could they ever find a teacher who knew so many things? Finally it was decided that the only one with so much knowledge was - a cat!....(Thoug h Barnac, Squire of Catnap,) was willing to teach the boy, he insisted that Johnny must also learn to think for himself. And so one morning, when a drop of water splashed on Johnny's book, he soon reasoned where it came from - the ceiling . A n d t h e splash of water was a tear. This tear, though Johnny did not at first realize it, was the beginning of another exciting quest. For Phoebe the Spider was crying because he had lost a treasure, the Magic Hat. 247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
117 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to pages and edges of text block, faint water marks at top/bottom edge of b oa rds - mai nly on rear b oar d. Dust jacket has very light browning, small closed tear at top of rear hinge, very light edge wrinkling, water marks at edges - mainly inside top edge, old price label on front flap. Very Good-/Good+

Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass.
