EXPATRIATES AND PATRIOTS: AMERICAN ARTISTS, SCHOLARS, AND WRITERS IN EUROPE., Earnest, Ernest.
101 Earnest, Ernest. EXPATRIATES AND PATRIOTS: AMERICAN ARTISTS, SCHOLARS, AND WRITERS IN EUROPE.
Duke University Press, Durham, North Carolina, 1968, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "A considerable amount of our literary and social criticism has been based on the premise that during much of our history the United States has been inhospitable to the intellectual and the a rtist. The term 'exile' has been used frequently and Henry James has been pictured as the prime victim. The present study is a detailed examination of a selected number of representative writers, artists, and intellectuals who spent a con s i d e r a b l e amount of time abroad. Its purpose is to determine the extent to which they were 'exiled', and especially to learn what they had to say about the contrast between the American and European scenes....Those discussed are Irving, Ti ck no r, B an cr of t, C ogswell, Cooper, Morse, Greenough, Powers, Allston, Story, Fuller, Hawthorne, James, Frederic, and Wharton. In a special chapter devoted to the unique problems of the expatriates of the 1920's, such figures as Stein, Hemi ngw ay, Cr owl ey, Fi tzg era ld, and the Crosbys are included...." INANNA: FROM THE MYTHS OF ANCIENT SUMER., Echlin, Kim.
102 Echlin, Kim. INANNA: FROM THE MYTHS OF ANCIENT SUMER.
Toronto Groundwood 2003 0888994966 / 9780888994967 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Linda Wolfsgruber.
72 pp, 9 3/4" H. Decorated endpapers, colour illustrations. "Long before the Bible and the Koran, before the myths of the Greeks and Romans were set down, the people of Sumer recorded the stories of their gods and kings on cuneiform tablets. The world's oldest epic poem is the 'Epic of Gilgamesh', the tale of a hero who was part god, part man. But just in the past century a thrilling discovery was made - the four-thousand-year-old stories of his powerful sister, the goddess Inanna. Inanna is a goddess who embodies the quest for growth. Her stories tell how she develops from childish inexperiece and youthful exuberance into maturity and gains the powers to create, to destroy and to name. She is a goddess of spunk and wisdom who outwits and defies the powerful, falls in love with the shepherd Dumuzi and, like Gilgamesh, dares to seek immortality. The people of Sumer associated Inanna with the planet Venus - radiant, changeable and mysterious. They worshipped her with awe and adoration. With the guidance of Sumerian scholars, Kim Echlin has produced a moving, sensitive and knowledgeable translation of the Inanna myths. They describe an ancient goddess who was at once a great warrior, lover, nurturer, seeker of knowledge and giver of power - a figure worthy of admiration by people of any age." ANGLO-AMERICAN RELATIONS AND THE FRANCO QUESTION 1945-1955., Edwards, Jill.
103 Edwards, Jill. ANGLO-AMERICAN RELATIONS AND THE FRANCO QUESTION 1945-1955.
Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1999, first edition.
291 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0198228716 "...examines the formulation of British and American policy between 1945 and 1955 towards one of the most hated regimes of this century. The Franco question, though apparently not of the first importance in the evolution of Cold War policy, nevertheless haunted British and American governments during this period. It posed a problem which epitomizes the difficulty of dealing with pariah regimes. As such it highlights for historians the attempts of these two governments to straddle the contradictions inherent in the emerging dual system of the United Nations, or internationalism, on the one hand, and the older system of balance of power, played out by the superpowers as the Cold War. Set as it is in the domestic and international context, it also exemplifies problems faced today by individual governments and by the United Nations in dealing with questions of intervention or non-intervention in distasteful regimes." THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690., Ellis, Peter Berresford.
105 Ellis, Peter Berresford. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1976, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. "In the year 1690 Ireland was the pivot of the European crisis. Louis XIV had sent over the deposed king James II with French money, troops and generals in order to secure Irelan d and eventually England as allies. William III, together with other members of the League of Augsburg, sought to prevent a Jacobite restoration in England and the consequent domination of Europe by France. On 1 July 1690, the decisive da y o f t h e battle of the Boyne, the presence of troops from the continent on both sides of the river emphasized the international issues at stake. But the battle was fought for other reasons which are still remembered today. The Cromwellian la nd o wn er s a nd t h e English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster wanted to defend their property and power; the Old English Catholics and the native Irish fought to regain their confiscated lands and to drive out the alien English conquerors. H ow fa r, in fa ct, di d W il liam and James represent these respective interests and what happened after such bitter fighting? Peter Berresford Ellis describes the movements of both armies prior to the battle and the scene of the battlefield itsel f. Wi th his ch arac teri stic im partiality he assesses the personalities and strategy of the various leaders - the Earl of Tyrconnell, the young Duke of Berwick and Patrick Sarsfield on the Jacobite side and the old Duke of Shomberg, the Count of Solm s-B raun fels and Gusta vus H amil ton on the Williamite side. For it was the foresight, skills or mistakes of such men which were to determine the outcome of the battle. Vivid eye-witness accounts of soldiers captured in both camps add f eel ing t o th is st ory o f hat red, h ope an d cou rage which captured the imagination of the generations to come. But the author does not merely ascertain the military significance of William's victory. He outlines the consequences of Williamit e ru le for both Catho lics a nd Pro testant s alike , in b oth Ulster and the South, and in so doing destroys - in surprising ways - some of the myths surrounding the battle of the Boyne." THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
109 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" Minor rubbing, tiny bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear and minor browni ng o n spin e. Ve ry Good +/Very Good+

Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D) soft cover. ISBN 1550022008 B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toron to and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang u p a cross the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toront o Ar c hi ves, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary c ha nge . Th e century was on the move and Toronto was moving with it. The photographers showcased in the book (William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Goss, and Frank W. Micklethwaite) were also breaking new ground, turning away from the formality of the st udio to capture the city in transition, thereby establishing a permanent record - one that we can enjoy today." But he was also a loner playing a team game, a free spirit in an era when players were expected not to make waves. Teammates and management alike wrote him off as an eccentric, an enigma. At what should have been the peak of his career, he abandoned the game, embarking on a lifelong search for meaning in his life. 117 Fowler, William M., Jr. REBELS UNDER SAIL: THE AMERICAN NAVY DURING THE REVOLUTION.
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1976, book club edition.
320 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Almost as soon as the smoke had settled at Lexington and Concord, the American Revolution was being fought on the sea as well as on land. A fragile and disunited coalition of thirteen colonies, embarking on a war with a great naval power, began to build a navy for the 'preservation of the lives, liberty and property of the good people of these Colonies'. (This book) provides a vivid and authoritative history of h o w t h e new American nation set about its task. Americans have always been a sea-minded people, and even before the Declaration of Independence was signed, the Congress resolved to build a strong navy. The maritime skills of New England and th e ti m be r, p itch and turpentine of the colonies had made them a major resource for the British navy; this resource the Americans now turned toward their own ends. Fowler describes how a small group of delegates to Congress, led by John Adam s an d str on gly su ppo rted by Washington, labored to form a powerful fighting fleet. He describes the difficulty of enlisting men for the navy (they preferred to sail on privateers where they could reap rich rewards from capturing enemy vessel s) , th e jock eyi ng f or c omma nd by captains, the building of ships in shipyards all up and down the coast. The fledgling navy made some terrible blunders - most notably the disastrous Penobscot expedition which cost the Americans dearly - but it also en joyed mom ents of gr eat g lory, particularly under its greatest commander, John Paul Jones. Fowler describes both the failures and the successes, and he surveys the story not just of the navy itself but of the privateers and merchant s hip s tha t f ought along side it." 408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1976 0770513891 / 9780770513894 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
232 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations, map. "For forty years the 'Little Emperor', Sir George Simpson, ruled a domain that stretched from Hudson Bay to the Pacific and the Arctic, wielding power a feudal king might have envied. An illegitimate child, raised by his father's family in Scotland, Simpson caught the eye of Andrew Colvile of the Hudson's Bay Company. Simpson was first sent to North America in 1820, that last year of uneasy rivalry before the North West and Hudson's Bay companies united. (He) rose rapidly in the Company's service; in an era of primitive communication he was given a great deal of latitude by his employers, and he quickly demonstrated that they could rely on his judgement. Ruthless and domineering in both public and private life, he made many enemies, but his undoubted business talents won wide admiration in Canada and in England. In his later years Simpson was increasingly involved in the business life of Canada, and by the time of his death in 1860, he was one of the leading financial figures in the colony."
