MOSHE SAFDIE., Kohn, Wendy, editor. (Moshe Safdie, Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Peter G. Rowe, Witold Rybczynski.)
101 Kohn, Wendy, editor. (Moshe Safdie, Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Peter G. Rowe, Witold Rybczynski.) MOSHE SAFDIE.
London Academy Editions 1996 1854904531 / 9781854904539 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." Two tiny dents at top edge of rear board, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light rubbing, minor edge wear/wrinkling.

A CHECKLIST OF TORONTO CABINET AND CHAIR MAKERS, 1800-1865., Mackinnon, Joan.
108 Mackinnon, Joan. A CHECKLIST OF TORONTO CABINET AND CHAIR MAKERS, 1800-1865.
Nationa Museums of Canada, Ottawa, 1975.
199 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H), soft cover. National Museum of Man Mercury Series, History Division Paper No. 11. B&w illustrations. "This check-list, containing approximately 500 names, attempts to include not only all the autonomous cabinet and chairmakers who began their operations in Toronto before 1865, but also all those who were employed by the larger manufacturers and who may have done nothing more than turn out component parts. (It) gives only the barest details for most of the entries: name, occupation (the way in which the man was identified at the time), working dates to 1890, and dates and places of residence and/or business to 1865. Additional information, including biographical data, types of furniture made, number and names of employees, outside activities, etc., is included where available. The working dates given are the earliest and latest dates for which there is actual proof that the cabinetmaker or chairmaker was working in Toronto. This is so even in cases where there may be reason to believe that the craftsman was active prior to or after the dates noted. Where a cabinetmaker is known to have changed his profession, his later occupation is mentioned, but the final date is always for work as a cabinet or chairmaker. In most instances birth dates are correct only to within a year, as they usually had to be calculated by subtracting the man's stated age from the year of the census or tax assessment roll in which it was given." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light foxing to top of textblock, very light rubbing/soiling, light soiling to spine, very minor edge wear. VG

116 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Canada provided the third largest allied navy in the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Navy, born amidst controversy over its very existence just before the First World War grew from small beginnings with the acquisition of the cruisers Rainbow and Niobe to radical expansion in the 1940's to fight the battle of the Atlantic. The RCN has always been a wartime service: its first submarines were bought, not by Ottawa, but by British Columbia, in the tumultuous days immediately preceding the outbreak of war in 1914. Its last aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure, left commission despite a costly refit as the tensions of the Cold War receded. (This) is the story of the ships of the RCN giving a brief history of their active service and presenting a visual account of Canada's Navy in dramatic pictures of Canada's own ships."
