"The true story of Winnipeg born William Stephenson (known as 'Intrepid'), his career, and the secret World War II espionage organization, British Securit y Coordination, which he established in the heart of New York City. Stephenson staffed BSC with hundreds of Canadians recruited from across the country. Bill Macdonald documents Stephenson's clouded early life and unravels layers of misinformati o n from previous books and secret papers to reveal the astonishing details of the man who said: 'Nothing deceives like a document'. - Included in this volume are many interviews with former members of BSC: secretaries, cipher clerks, covert operat iv es and with former BSC agent, British author, Roald Dahl. Of special historic significance are the revelations of the Allies' communications genius, the late Benjamin de Forest Bayly, who had previously never discussed his war work. His electr oni c w izardry helped guard the Allies' top secrets, and win the Battle of the Atlantic. (This book) weaves its way through deception, treachery, war, espionage and a search for the 'real' James Bond." 107 MacKenzie, David. Foreword by Pierre Berton. ARTHUR IRWIN: A BIOGRAPHY.

323 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "From 1925 to 1950 Arthur Irwin was the driving force behind the success of 'Maclean's Magazine', first as associate editor, then managing editor, and, finally, as editor. He had strong views on what it meant to be Canadian, and under his direction 'Maclean's' was moulded into 'Canada's National Magazine', mirroring the development of Canada as an independent nation in the twentieth century. In the years before the outbreak of the Second World War, he was at the centre of the Maclean company's investigation of defence contracting, or what has become known as the 'Bren Gun Scandal'. In the 1940s Irwin actively sought out writers of talent and potential and gradually added to the magazine's staff many Canadian writers who went on to distinguished careers, including Ralph Allen, Pierre Berton, Blair Fraser, and Scott Young. After leaving 'Maclean's' in 1950, Irwin was appointed film commissioner at the National Film Board, during a time when the board's survival was in doubt because of allegations of espionage and subversion. Irwin was the man called in to deal with the NFB's 'red scare', and, afterwards, he reorganized the board and moved its operations from Ottawa to Montreal. Irwin subsequently went on to a career as a diplomat: he was appointed high commissioner in Australia, and ambassador to Brazil and Mexico. In his last professional position he was publisher of an Victoria newspaper. This book, in describing a man who was profoundly representative of his times, and whose presence in major Canadian institutions was influential, captures the mood of Irwin's period and raises important questions about the roots of present-day Canadian nationalism and cultural identity." One small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.

465 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), B&w photographs, maps. "Jean Batten, whose sudden disappearance in Majorca in 1982 created a mystery for nearly five years, was one of the great aviation megastars of the 1930s. Her spectacular flights ranked with those of Britain's legendary Amy Johnson and America's Amelia Earhart. Yet, despite her brilliance as a pilot, she remained the least well-known of them all. For the dentist's daughter from New Zealand bu ilt an impregnable wall around her private life - which was dominated, though few ever knew it, by the shadowy Svengali figure of her mother. Drawing on secret memoirs found after (her) death and on hundreds of interviews with people who knew her, this first biography of Jean's sad and elusive life explodes the enduring myths of happiness and perfection that she created for herself. The real Jean Batten emerges as a fascinating woman, who combined bravery and ruthlessness with the stunning a nd seductive beauty she used so effectively to achieve her destiny. After her disappearance, the search for Jean during the mid-1980s went on fruitlessly for five years. But where the diplomatic initiatives of the New Zealand Government failed to find her, the determination of Ian Mackersey - and his wife Caroline - succeeded. In a major amateur detective operation they established at last in 1987 the truth about this remarkable woman's bizarre and lonely fate." LONDON BUSES 1929-1939., Martin, Gavin.
113 Martin, Gavin. LONDON BUSES 1929-1939.
Ian Allan, London, 1990.
144 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711018804 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "....1929 was marked by a great leap forward in London bus design which followed the appointment of George John Rackham as Chief Engin eer at AEC. The following year saw the introduction of the Green Line coach services working across London from what were then sleepy country towns 30 or more miles distant from the fringes of the London General Omnibus Co's empire. The y e a r 1 9 3 0 also saw the first hesitant appearance of the diesel engine, quickly to be followed by the fluid flywheel, Wilson gearbox and hydraulic brakes. By the summer of 1932, a year before the formation of London Transport, some of the Ge ne ra l' s f am ou s Bl u ebird buses had these features in combination. London Transport quickly got to work replacing obsolete and non-standard buses and coaches. By the end of 1937 the General's NS type had all gone and by the summer of 1939 on ly a h and fu l of the v ehi cl es inherited from independent operators remained. The famous 10T10 type had replaced the first-generation Green Line coaches. New bus and coach designs of unorthodox layout - the TF type with the engine under the flo or, the CR ty pe with th e en gin e at the rear - were already in service. The side-engined AEC Q-type had come and gone as a production model, even though most of London Transport's 200 examples were to last until the 1950s. The incomparable RT type dou ble -de cke r whi ch w as to dom inate the London bus scene for nearly 40 years also appeared in 1939....takes the reader through these developments as they occurred, explaining their significance in language he or she will understand ." 93 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "The Siege of Derry (1688-9) is the key political myth in Loyalist culture. This study looks at the Siege, reconstructing the ways in which the defence of Derry has been commemorated and interpreted over the last 300 years. Celebrated by historians, artists, poets and preachers, re-enacted in anniversary demonstrations and parades, the Siege provides a unique insight into the mixture of triumphalism and insecurity that lies behind the slogan 'No Surrender!'. The story of the Siege embodies in dramatic form the series of timeless lessons regarding the relationship between Ulster Protestants and their ancestral enemies, and the book shows how each generation has emphasised or suppressed different components according to its ideological needs. At various times the emblematic events of 1688-9 have been represented as a providential deliverance from popery, the restoration of the ancient constitution, a blow struck for the rights of man, and the original act of loyalist rebellion. The memory of the Siege has been a source of discord as well as an agent of union, exposing tensions between Liberals and Conservatives, Anglicans and Presbyterians, the social elite and the common people. A fuller understanding of its role in the Loyalist imagination affirms the complexity and diversity of the Protestant tradition." Unpaginated, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 085033716X Pictorial endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Kingston upon Thames is a Royal Borough, one of only four in England and Wales. Seven Anglo-Saxon Kings were crowned in the town, which has been an important market and trading centre for more than a thousand years. The Royal Borough was enlarged in 1965 by the inclusion of the two former Boroughs of Malden and Coombe, and S u r b i t o n . At the beginning of the 19th century, the built-up area around the Market Place supported the traditional trades for which Kingston was famous - malting, brewing, tanning, and tallow-chandlery - while mansions with extensive pleas ur e gr ou nd s an d farms surrounded the town. The coming of the railways in 1838 and the subsequent rush for development land produced a dramatic change. Large estates were sold and built over to form the pattern of streets and houses familiar t oda y. S urb ito n and M alden and Coombe became separate authorities and churches, chapels and schools were built to serve their expanding communities. The construction of the Kingston By-Pass in 1927 encouraged further growth and the developme nt o f t he a rea into a cen tre of light industry meant that firms like the Sopwith Aviation Company grew rapidly alongside more traditional businesses. The splendid illustrations in this book, many of which come from the local history collecti on in Kin gston Her itage Ce ntre, cov er that important 150-year period in the history of all three former Boroughs, as the ancient town amid open country was transformed into the contemporary scene. The book provides a fascinating and informa tive r ecord of da ily l ife si nce Victor ian t imes, in wartime and in peace, and of the evolution of the present environment. It will be particularly welcomed by those who still remember many of the scenes and events depicted so vividly in the photogr aphs a nd by a ll who are in tere sted in the p ast of the Kingston area." "The ill-fated gold bullion brought by St Vincent Halfhyde to South Africa is destined to play a further part in his turbulent career. T he Boer War is dragging into a series of sieges, the British army floudering on unfamiliar terrain against the cunning of the Boer farmers to the point that even the high principles of Britain's General Buller are eroded and the gold used to b r i b e t hose that can bring a speedy end to the seemingly interminable siege of Ladysmith. Halfhyde's RNR commission is activated and, accompanied by the dull but dependable civil servant Mr Bewdley, he is ordered to embark aboard an armoured tr ai n wi th a naval gun crew to escort the gold from Cape Town to Ladysmith; but Boer attacks, unconventional transport and the misery of the extreme climate lead them and their burden into enemy hands. Through interrogation, escape and betray a l, Hal fh yde co m es face to face with single-minded and determined adversaries for whom the lure of gold is so powerful that personal gain overrides any loyalty to the cause of victory. "The campaign of 1895 into the interior of West Africa to capture the King of Ashanti, Premph, and senior chiefs, was led by Colonel Sir Franc is Scott. For this successful undertaking some 2,500 Ashanti Stars were awarded. Mainly unnamed and often detached from named medals in a group, this campaign star has always attracted a fairly high price but little has been written on t h e f o r c e s participating, of the march up country or the previous and subsequent medal entitlement of the participants. Written and compiled by two members of the Orders and Medals Research Society, (this book) is designed to be of interest to a l l in te re st ed in medal collecting and the research into the life of the man who earned the medal. This was the last campaign in which the British Army wore red tunics; it produced a long casualty list of dead and fever victims and was t o p rov e a tra ini ng gro und for the 129 officer, 34 of whom subsequently rose to Generals rank. Besides the complete P.R.O roll (WO/100/79) of all British and West Indian participants, often with considerable personal detail, this work contains muc h pr ev io usly unp ubl ishe d ma t erial from both officers and men as well as contemporary newspaper reports, excerpts from Regimental magazines and the official account of the expedition." It is also the story of the men who served in her, and of other ships who operated with her, in war time in EG-9, and in peacetime in her various training roles. It is a representative tale that could have been told, and has been, of any one of a hundred similar ships of the Royal Canadian Navy. So why this particular ship? Because HMCS Swansea is typical, yet atypical. Typical in that she participated in the Battle of the Atlantic in the same way as her sister frigates; atypical in that she was involved in the destruction of four U-boats, more than any other RCN ship. And it was in this role of hunter-killer that she was absolutely the best." Book is slightly cocked, has light soiling on bottom edge of boards, faint erased pencil marks at top corner of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine, slight fading to spine colour, very small scuff mark (no colour loss) on front panel.
