THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME II: 1910-1921., Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.)
101 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME II: 1910-1921.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405862 / 9780195405866 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The second volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "records a time of great change and upheaval both in Montgomery's life and in society. When she wrote the first entry in this volume she had recently become a world-famous author, having published 'Anne of Green Gables' in 1908. Here we become privy to her response to the death of her grandmother, who had restricted her life severely; her marriage and honeymoon trip to Scotland and England; and her departure from Prince Edward Island to the new restrictions of her life as the wife of a Presbyterian minister in an Ontario village. Montgomery reveals the intensities of friendship, the minutiae of home-making, the joys of motherhood along with the traumas of a disturbed marriage, and records the sources and composition of the 'Anne' series and the emergence of her new heroine 'Emily'. Besides learning about the rewards and trials - including two unpleasant lawsuits - of being a successful author, we see also how a sensitive woman responded to the possibility, the actuality, and the aftermath of a world war. By turns tart and sentimental, sharp-sighted and anxiety-ridden, L.M. Montgomery provides a compelling record of her remarkable life against the background - both social and literary - of a tumultuous period in Canadian history." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. RUNNING THE GAUNTLET: HOW THREE GIANT LINERS CARRIED A MILLION MEN TO WAR, 1942-1945., Satchell, Alister.
103 Satchell, Alister. RUNNING THE GAUNTLET: HOW THREE GIANT LINERS CARRIED A MILLION MEN TO WAR, 1942-1945.
Chatham, London, 2001.
256 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1861761643 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "The use of the great Cunard liners 'Queen Elizabeth', 'Queen Mary' and 'Aquitania' as fast transatlantic troop tra nsports was one of the great high-risk operations of the Second World War, yet it was vital to the build-up of U.S. troops in the British Isles in preparation for D-Day. Sailing unescorted, and carrying up to 15,000 men at a time, a single t o r p e d o from a U-boat could have resulted in one of the greatest military disasters in history. This book, written by the former cipher officer of the 'Aquitania', gives a unique insight into this unprecedented wartime 'shuttle service', with g ra ph ic a cc ou n ts of the dangers faced not only from U-boats and enemy aircraft but also from the elements, as the liners crossed the stormy North Atlantic overloaded to an extent never anticipated by their designers. Most importantly, the aut hor re vea ls for th e first time how decoded 'Enigma' signals were central to the success of this opration, enabling the troops for the invasion of Europe to cross the Atlantic in time for the 1944 deadline. Based on the author's diaries, th is i nsid er's vie w o f on e of t he most fascinating, and dangerous, naval operations in history is an important contribution to our understanding of the Battle of the Atlantic, and of the Second World War as a whole." 104 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

Lawrencetown Beach, Nova Scotia Pottersfield 2010 1897426178 / 9781897426173 Soft Cover Near Fine
158 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)akes readers on a thrilling ride through the strange and fabled history of the Bill Lynch Shows, from its modest beginnings on McNab's Island in Halifax Harbour to the successful, tumultuous years criss-crossing the countryside to its current incarnation struggling along dark Maritime highways today. This is one of the most curious stories of this region's past, one never completely understood and, until now, never told in its entirety. The Bill Lynch Shows would breeze into small Maritime towns after dark, packed with enough electricity and magic to illuminate the imaginations of anyone who stepped foot on the midway for the brief while it played their town. For many, its return after a long winter made summer official. The shows became entrenched in the collective psyche, at once the centre of earthly thrills and some of the greatest acts of charity ever witnessed in the region. Clarence 'Soggy' Reid continued the enterprise in the same manner, until the death of a man on the carnival lot in Port Hawkesbury threatened to destroy the dream forever. Walsh chronicles the true story of the Maritime carnival with unflinching detail, weaving flashes of the carnival's captivating past with a first-hand account of life on the carnival lot today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing.

110 Webster, Donald Blake. Foreword by Charles F. Hummel. ENGLISH-CANADIAN FURNITURE OF THE GEORGIAN PERIOD.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1979, first edition.
232 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070829802 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, b&w drawings. "This handsome, extensively researched book shows that the heritage of fine craftsmanship in English-Canadian furniture extends back almost to the earliest periods of settlement. Donald Webster focuses on the styles and craftsmanship of English-Canadian furniture up to about 1830. The stylistic influences, as might be expected, were British and A m e r i c a n , but the materials used and the degree of ornamentation reflected local conditions. Canada at that time was a thinly populated series of colonies where people were still coping with the problems of taming the land and surviving th e wi nt er s. Th er e were few centres of affluence where people aspired to the finer things in life. Nonetheless there have come down to us examples of fine furniture clearly Canadian in origin and displaying the craftsmanship of skilled cabinet- ma ker s r ath er t han th e rough simplicity of pioneer furniture. Many pieces are outstanding for their handsome proportions and simple but elegant ornamentation. This is a book for all those who love fine furniture. Not only does (the author) sh ow a nd d escr ibe m ore than 3 00 excellent examples of Canadian Georgian furniture, but he also explores in detail the stylistic influences and the materials used, and explains some of the procedures used in identifying and dating early Cana dian furn iture ."
