CANADIAN PAINTING IN THE THIRTIES., Hill, Charles C.
101 Hill, Charles C. CANADIAN PAINTING IN THE THIRTIES.
The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, (1975).
223 pp, 4to, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, reproductions, tipped-in color plates. "In Canada, the years between the onset of the Depression and the outbreak of the Second World War were years of significant change and transition. The eco nomic and political upheavals of the period have, however, overshadowed eqully important developments in Canadian art...(this book) traces these developments in painting in Canada through the works of such artists as A.Y. Jackson, Emily Car r , D a v i d Milne, John Lyman, Andre Bieler, and Goodridge Roberts - from the nationalist, Toronto-based Group of Seven to the internationalist Contemporary Arts Society of Montreal." Dust jacket has small closed tears up to 1/2", browning - m ai nl y o n th e sp i ne and flap-folds, creases at edges - mainly between tears, small faint water mark on spine, tiny closed puncture on front flap-fold, very tiny foxing marks on front panel, light rubbing to panels. Stroud, Gloucestershire Budding / Sutton 1997 1840150017 / 9781840150018 Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, etc. "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war was crucial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won by its pilots (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Market that the RAF 's last bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom March 1944 Nos 571, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photographs, maps and plans, each chapter focuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a fascinating depiction of a bomber airfield at war." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

ON TARGET., Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster)
104 Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster) ON TARGET.
Village Book Store Press, Toronto, 1972, first edition.
248 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0919621015 "...until now there has been no fictional account (and very little of anything else) about that superb air force within an air force, the R.C.A.F.'s Six Bomber Group of R.A.F. Bomb er Command. Now....Canadians can get a glimpse of life in a typical Canadian heavy bomber squadron based in Yorkshire, England, as it was in the later turbulent days of the Second World War. The time is March, 1945. For Bill Sutcliffe, ai r b o m b e r from Toronto, and for Walt, Dave, Max and the others of his crew, it seems as though the war will end before they have a chance to prove themselves in action. But suddenly, almost before they know it, they are flying deep into Germa ny ag ai ns t th e enemy. An enemy retreating on the ground, his air force largely destroyed, but still undefeated and fighting deperately on. They soon learn the terrors of murderous flak concentrations, and have thrust at them a new formidable adv e rsa ry as th e f ir st jet fighters rise into the skies over Germany to do battle with them. How the Canadian airmen survive or die, how they spend their few precious, off-duty hours, is really the subject of this novel. But this book cannot avo id bei ng a p art hym n o f praise to that largely unsung work-horse of Bomber Command, the Handley Page Halifax bomber. To "N" for "Nan" and thousands of others like her, Canadian airmen like these in the story owe a debt which has never be en tr uly paid - unti l 'O n Tar get' ." 339 pp, 9" H. "Les Forces d'operations speciales (SOF) n'ont jamais fait partie integrante des capacities militaires du Canada. Her mother is trooping off eagerly - too eagerly, (she) thinks - to London 'to help with the war effort'. And Maureen is being shipped off to the stuffy-sounding Logan Academy for Young Ladies, a remote but supposedly safe boarding school in the Scottish Highlands. The girls at the school are just as Maureen expects: cold and cliquish, completely cowed by their cruel ringleader, Kathleen. But there's also something weird about these girls, something sinister. Why do they slip away in the middle of the night, one by one, to visit the woods surrounding the school? What's their secret society, called the Seven Magpies, all about - and why does it make them seem so nervous? It isn't until Maureen herself falls under the spell of a strange stone, a stone that compels her to leave it offerings of food, that she begins to understand what's making her schoolmates seem so strange. And then she discovers what the real danger is - - . A realistic yet magical story of what happens when a group of teenagers tampers with the ancient power of the Celts." STALIN: THE HISTORY OF A DICTATOR., Hyde, H. Montgomery. (Stalin.)
111 Hyde, H. Montgomery. (Stalin.) STALIN: THE HISTORY OF A DICTATOR.
London Rupert Hart-Davis 1971 0246640537 / 9780246640536 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
679 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Map endpapers, b&w plates. "The son of a drunken and poverty-stricken Georgian cobbler, Stalin was born in a wooden shack in a small town in Transcaucasia in 1879. When he died at his country villa outside Moscow in 1953, he was the absolute ruler of more than two hundred million Soviet subjects whom he had governed from his office in the Kremlin for upwards of a quarter of a century through the most brutal system of police terror. 'Like Peter the Great, Stalin fought barbarism with barbarism', said his henchman Nikita Khruschev, 'but he was a great man'. This book is largely an endorsement of that opinion. But it will also adjust the traditional view in many important respects. For instance, (the author) shows clearly that while working with the Bolshevik group led by Lenin, before being co-opted onto the party central committee in 1912, Stalin was also an informer for the Tsarist secret police. He describes how (Stalin) used his position as General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party to build up his pattern of dictatorial rule, and eliminate all his opponents, real or supposed, including Trotsky and virtually the whole of the Bolshevik Old Guard. He examines his role as Commander-in-Chief of Soviet forces during the War, and shows that though he constantly interfered with the conduct of operations, he was by no means the military ignoramus portrayed by Kruschev. (Hyde ) traces in detail the means by which Stalin was able to outwit both Churchill and Roosevelt at their various wartime conferences. Finally he describes how Stalin, by now a paranoiac, was prevented only by sudden illness and death from slaughtering all his remaining close colleagues in the Politburo. Using a mass of little-known Russian language sources as well as such important manuscript collections as the Tsarist secret police archives, the Trotsky papers, and the confidential reports from the British Embassy in Moscow, (Hyde) has produced a biography which is not only readable, but likely to prove the definitive study of this most successful dictator of modern times." Previous owner's signature on half -title page, short light ink mark on verso of frontispiece - also tiny mark on title page, very small slub in paper on free front endpaper, large dog-ear crease on page 417, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light soiling to edges of textblock, light line rub down rear board, slight bump to three corners. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling, a few tiny/small chips and tears, a few tiny dints on panels, line rub down rear panel and also a tiny dent, very light rubbing.

235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." Energy efficiency products, services, and programs all require effective selling. Professional sales skills make you more successful at advancing any energy efficiency initiative, regardless of your role in the process. Moreover, you need to think of yourself as a sales professional even if your job title does not include the word 'sales'. This book contains more than 80 short essays, each of which examines a unique aspect of efficiency-focused professional selling."

119 Johnson, E.A. "Rick", Major, editor. Foreword by Colonel R.D. Russell. TRENTON: 50 YEARS OF AIR FORCE.
CFB Trenton 50th Anniversary Committee, Trenton, Ontario, 1981.
160 pp, oblong 8vo (8 5/8" H x 10 1/2" D), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "Ever since it was officially opened in 1931 the base of Trenton, Ontario has been the most important military airfield in Canada. It began as a flying training base and in the early war years was responsible for training flight instructors who in turn helped to train the thousands of pilots in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war the base remained the home of Central Flying School and pilot training continued to be the primary activity. Post war expansion of commercial air traffic to and from Toronto gradually began to interfere with the freedom of movement of the trainers and in 1961CFS was moved to the open skies of the prairies and Trenton became the home of Air Transport Command. Throughout its 50 year history many thousands of airmen and airwomen have lived and worked here. Countless thousands more have passed through, either on course or as air transport passengers. Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802022707 / 9780802022707 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
342 pp, 10 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1898 a group of scientists, working without pay, often under hazardous conditions with only the most primitive equipment, began a systematic study of the fishes of Canada's inland and marine waters. The team operated under the aegis of a board of management which was later to evolve into the Fisheries Research Board, a scientific organization that has placed Candada among the world's leaders in fishery knowledge. This history of the Fisheries Research Board examines the aims and achievements of its research, its attempts to deal with the often conflicting demands of pure and applied science, and its confrontations with a frequently uncomprehending and dissatisfied government. The people who shaped and sustained the organization figure prominently in the account. In-depth taped interviews with senior members and employees, as well as the Annual Reports and other publications of the Department of Fisheries, have enabled (the author) to produce a rich history of a remarkable scientific organization." Very light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners.
