108 Corrigan, Gordon. MUD, BLOOD AND POPPYCOCK: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Cassell 2003 0304359556 / 9780304359554 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
431 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, photographs, diagrams. "The First World War was a unique experience for the United Kingdom: the only time Britain fielded a mass army that opposed the main enemy in the primary theatre of war. One consequence of this 'continental commitment' was that Britain suffered many more casualties in 1914-18 than in the Second World War, a factor that has coloured post-1945 attitudes to 'the Great War'. Yet, as Gordon Corrigan reveals, the First World War was neither unnecessary nor badly conducted - two claims made with such frequency in the 1960s that they became the new orthodoxy. The British Army did make mistakes during the First World War, but most were honest errors made by men as well trained and as well prepared as they could be, given the unprecedented expansion of the pre-1914 army into a force of over three million men and women. (He has) come to the conclusion that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, far from being the 'butcher and bungler' of popular belief, was the man who took a tiny British army and expanded it, trained it and prepared it, until it was the only Allied army capable of defeating the Germans militarily in 1918." Very slight cigarette odor, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

A TREASURY OF AFRO-AMERICAN FOLKLORE: THE ORAL LITERTURE, TRADITIONS, RECOLLECTIONS, LEGENDS, TALES, SONGS, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, CUSTOMS, SAYINGS, AND HUMOR OF PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THE AMERICAS., Courlander, Harold.
109 Courlander, Harold. A TREASURY OF AFRO-AMERICAN FOLKLORE: THE ORAL LITERTURE, TRADITIONS, RECOLLECTIONS, LEGENDS, TALES, SONGS, RELIGIOUS BELIEFS, CUSTOMS, SAYINGS, AND HUMOR OF PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT IN THE AMERICAS.
New York SMITHMARK 1996 0765197332 / 9780765197337 Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine Enrico Arno.
618 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w decorations by Enrico Arno, b&w photographs, musical notations. "(A) notable milestone in the collection and presentation of oral literature and traditions from black communities in the Western Hemisphere. It demonstrates the powerful cultural influence of Africa on this side of the Atlantic. (I)ncludes a wide array of orally transmitted traditions of the numerous, sometimes disparate, African-American cultures of the New World. Among these traditions are tales of scoundrels, heroes, rollicking adventures, friendship, and much more: songs, myths, myth-legends, epic-like narrations, and recollections of historical happenings. There are descriptions of cult life, around which many traditions and beliefs flow; of music and dance, which have an integral connection with traditional ways; and of the social scene in places where Africans and Europeans, or white and black ideas intermingled and became Afro-American. (This book) perceives the interconnections of cultural inheritances throughout the Afro-American region and the local divergences as well. Early sections of the book survey the traditions and oral literature of Spanish, French, and English-speaking islands of the Caribbean, and of areas of Central and South America inhabited by people of African descent. There follows an extensive section devoted to the tales, beliefs, recollections, songs, religious epics, and a wide variety of oral creations of blacks in the United States. The Appendixes include a number of African stories and descriptions that point up the impact of African traditions on the cultures of Afro-America. Very light browning to edges of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
110 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint foxing marks on free endpapers, light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxing marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny closed tears at bottom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps.

112 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. B eginning with the settlement of Greek colonists on the French Mediterranean coast in c.600 BC, this is a lucid study of the effects of trade in advance of the frontiers on the barbarian communities beyond. 115 Cynk, Jerzy B. HISTORY OF THE POLISH AIR FORCE, 1918-1968.
Osprey, (Reading, Berkshire, 1972).
207 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 250 b&w photographs. "This detailed account of the Polish Air Force - its birth in revolution, its brief but heroic period as the air arm of an independent nation, and its present status as one of the principal weapons in the armoury of the Soviet bloc - fills a serious gap in published aviation history. It is the first complete coverage of the subject to appear anywhere in the world...extensive appendices list data on aircraft supplies and equipment strength, operational records, commanders, bases, and losses and air victories in the two world wars...Based on much information new to the West, exhaustively documented, and written with admirable objectivity, it amounts to more than a history of an air force. The author has taken such trouble to explain the historical, social and economic background that it becomes an important contribution to the history of Poland itself, and a commentary on the socio-political problems of air technology which are just as applicable today." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing. VG/VG

THE PENINSULAR JOURNAL, 1808-1817., D'Urban, Benjamin, Major-General Sir. Edited, with introduction, by I.J. Rousseau.
116 D'Urban, Benjamin, Major-General Sir. Edited, with introduction, by I.J. Rousseau. THE PENINSULAR JOURNAL, 1808-1817.
Greenhill, London, 1988, reprint.
355 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947898875 Maps. "Whether among the first three to charge the French guns at Medellin, leading his troopers into the enemy ranks at Salamanca, or evolving order out of the chaos that bedevill ed the Portuguese Army in 1809, Sir Benjamin D'Urban was not only a brave and resolute soldier but also a painstaking and highly efficient Chief of Staff to Marshal Beresford. Finding, on arrival at Corunna in October 1808, that he had been a p p o i n t ed to that part of the Army left behind in Portugal, D'Urban set out to meet Sir John Moore in the hope of receiving fresh orders. This was the beginning of six years of unbroken service which included taking part in ten battles and s ie ge s. Af te r a short period as Staff Officer to Sir Robert Wilson, he was appointed Colonel and QMG to the Portuguese Army by Marshal Beresford in April 1809. The 'Journals' give a day to day summary of the Peninsular Campaign, which was found in val uab l e b y S ir Charles Oman, and provides a counter to what D'Urban considered unfair criticism of Beresford by Sir Charles Napier. Long out of print, this unique record of events fills a need for everyone interested in the campaigns of 1809 -181 5, p ar ticu larl y i n regard to the operations of the Right Wing of the Allied Army and of the part played by the Portuguese Army, which has not always received the credit due for some of its major exploits."
