THE FIRST AIR WAR 1914-1918., Kennett, Lee.
101 Kennett, Lee. THE FIRST AIR WAR 1914-1918.
New York Free Press 1991 0029173019 / 9780029173015 Book Club Edition Very Good Very Good+
275 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(T)ells the complete story of the Great War's air battles, from eastern and western front, from the skies and seas of Europe to those of the Middle East and Africa. Based on exhaustive research - official records, scholarly works, diaries, correspondence, memoirs, and oral history transcripts - (this) unique history traces the airplane's prewar debut and development and its appeal to all belligerents large and small, who raced to develop their own designs, strategies and tactics. Kennett shows how the plane, used first as a frail 'flying observation platform', evolved into a weapon of destruction and death whose power was made incontrovertible by 1916 at the great battle of Verdun. While he chronicles the struggle for dominance in the air, the author also provides insight into the role of flying weaponry in the great land battles. As the combat role of these amazing machines became more defined, their use became more diverse, as witnessed by the development of massed fighters, the emergence of close air support, strategic bombing, and anti-aircraft defenses, and the introduction of escort and patrol work and anti-submarine warfare at sea. Here, to, are the daring men who volunteered to pilot these newfangled machines. Following them through flight school and into fighting units, Kennett dramatically recreates both the dangers of airborne combat and the boisterous, romantic world of the squadron on the ground." Book lightly cocked in one illustration section. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, corner crease on rear flap.

OPERATION VICTOR SEARCH., Koster, Douglas A.
103 Koster, Douglas A. OPERATION VICTOR SEARCH.
Lavenham Terence Dalton 1979 0900963956 / 9780900963957 Very Good Very Good- Dust jacket painting by J.A. Davies.
172 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H). Map endpapers. B&w photographs, maps. "On the 20th August 1959 the prototype Victor Mark 2 bomber disappeared during flight trials over the Irish Sea. The captain of a coaster bound from the Mersey to the Thames noticed a splash some eight miles away, when off the Pembrokeshire coast, reported it to Ilfracombe Radio Station and made a brief entry in the ship's log. From then on Operation Victor Search was underway. Controlled by H.M.S. Harrier it involved more than 40 ships and 4,000 men and women and was officially described as 'probably the greatest salvage operation of its type ever undertaken'. Those at sea toiled for long and arduous hours, often in the most atrocious weather, throughout a wild winter and much of the following year. When the final signal, 'Return to harbour - search complete' went out, the trawlers, backed by salvage vessels, had carried out more than 12,000 hauls and nearly 600,000 pieced of the missing Victor had been recovered. This represented 70 per cent of the aircraft and gave the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, enough information for them to be 'reasonably satisfied' that they knew the cause of the accident." Light wrinkling at top of spine and small bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear, light rubbing, wrinkling along top edge, small closed tear at top of rear hinge - archivally taped.

THE BUMBLE BEE PRINCE. A JUNIOR PROGRAMS BOOK., Lancourt, Saul. (Alexander Pushkin.)
106 Lancourt, Saul. (Alexander Pushkin.) THE BUMBLE BEE PRINCE. A JUNIOR PROGRAMS BOOK.
New York Garden City Publishing 1940 Very Good - Good+ Sheilah Beckett.
Unpaginated (approx. 36 pp), 9 1/2" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w and colour illustrations throughout, some musical notation. "This is a story of old Russia, when that faraway land was ruled by the jolly Tzar Saltan. It is the story of lovely young Militrissa who became the Tzar's bride and of Nastasia, her jealous sister, who plotted against her with their wicked nurse, Barbarischa. For a time their schemes were successful, and poor Militrissa and her little son, Prince Guidon, were tossed on the sea for many days and nights with only a barrel as their boat. How they were finally saved and how the young Prince was magically transformed into a bumble bee is all told in this exciting book. Based on an original poem by Alexander Pushkin, this bright, fanciful fairy tale has been brought joyously to life by the Junior Programs opera, 'The Bumble Bee Prince'. The opera, with its beautiful Rimsky-Korsakov music, is a favorite of children everywhere. This book follows its action closely and includes many of the principal musical themes." The first b&w illustration (the heading for Chapter One) has been fairly neatly colored in by a previous owner - all other illustrations are untouched. Light edge wear (light to moderate at corners), small bump to bottom corner of boards. BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION VESSELS 1849-1922., Layman, R.D.
109 Layman, R.D. BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION VESSELS 1849-1922.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1989.
128 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870212109 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Before the flight-deck aircraft carrier evolved, there were many attempts by the navies of the world to take flying m achines to sea. This book describes by particulars and brief histories the surface craft that over a span of 73 years were employed experimentally or operationally in efforts to adapt aerial devices to the service of naval warfare. Many of t h e s e w ere influential in the development of shipboard aviation; others were less so but are included because of their interest. The book concentrates on vessels employed principally, or solely, for aeronautical purposes, and omits detailed p ar ti cu la rs of ships whose usage involved no permanent conversion. However, although the book is devoted largely to vessels predating the flight-deck carrier, the first three ships are described, since they represent the culmination of nearl y thr ee- qua rte rs o f a century of theory, experiment and practical experience. (This book) follows the successful approach of the 'Conway's Fighting Ships' series, divided by country with general introductions followed by tabular data and hist or ies of a ll t he s hip s. Th e book is illustrated with some very rare photos of these little-known vessels and their aircraft." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's embossed stamp on half-title page. THE STAR SEEKERS. A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL., Lesser, Milton.
111 Lesser, Milton. THE STAR SEEKERS. A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL.
Philadelphia John C. Winston 1953 First Edition Very Good- Good- Paul Calle, dust jacket design. Endpaper design by Alex Schomburg.
212 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "When man tackles the first really long journey - across twenty-six trillion miles of uncharted space - to the nearest star, it will take him two hundred years to complete the flight. Not until the sixth generation nears maturity will the starship reach its destination. Around this fascinating theme, Milton Lesser has woven a tale of the first starship's final days of flight. He pictures the ship as a hollowed-out meteorite composed of four concentric circles - a world in which civilization has deteriorated and superstition risen to a high pitch, making those within unaware of the fact that they are traveling through space or that their journey is destined to end. All Mikal knew when he embarked on the 'Journey of the Four Circles' was that every eighteen-year-old from Astrosphere, the outermost circle, must visit each of the other circles if he hoped to become an Engineer. But before he completed his trip, he unearthed startling truths that threw the four circles into a state of chaos. Gradually Mikal discovered that unless the people of the four circles took immediate action the ship was doomed to crash. Mikal's desperate efforts to unite the four circles in order to save their world is a story of rising tension and clashing interests. Not only is this a tale of man's triumph over the barriers of space, but a fabulously exciting epic of civilization's victory over superstition and complacency. With subtle satire the author has written one of the most realistic and unforgettable stories ever to appear in the science fiction field." Light edge wear, a few very small light stains on fore-edge of text block, a few small and tiny light stains on pages 64 & 65, slight mark on copyright page, scattered color loss on both outside hinges, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has rubbing and a few tiny scuffs - mainly on front panel and spine, a few edge tears archvally taped, a few edge creases/wrinkling, light edge wear, scattered tiny light foxing marks, light fading to color on spine, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

FRONTLINE AIRLINE: TROOP CARRIER PILOT IN WORLD WAR II., Lester, John R. (Bob), Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (Ret.)

Sunflower University Press, Manhattan, KS, 1994.
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0897451791 B&w photographs. "John R. Lester describes his work as a reminiscence - after 50 years - of being 19- or 20-something, with wings, in the whirlwind of war. His narrative reflects the innocent optimism, the adventure, and the youthful sense of immortality of the time - from induction through Cadet training to become a pilot. This is a personal odyssey into combat in a Troop Carrier Group of the 5th Air Force, from New Guinea to J a p a n . Troop Carrier, says the author, 'was a different breed of cat'. Although they hauled 'everything imaginable', their primary purpose was to put paratroopers and gliders into combat behind enemy lines and to maintain a conduit of supply fo r co mb at s i tutations, initially using the C-47 Skytrain and then the C-46 Commando." Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1982.
299 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0192158635 B&w plates. "(I)n this gripping full-length account of his first exile we see Napoleon not as the Man of Destiny but scaled down to human size, his field of action no longer the whole of Europe but the comic-opera kingdom of Elba. Even on this tiny island the habits of power persisted, and Napoleon acted the role of the great commander, the lawgiver, the patron of the arts and sciences, and in all his dealings r e v e a l e d himself as an egotist of great personal charm. (The author's) account of his year in exile is an exciting story of plot and counter-plot, of careless statesmen, political intriguers, dissident soldiers, and secret agents. Napoleon' s wa it in g ga me on Elba is played against a background of unrest in France, muddle in England, and warlike quarrels among the Allies trying to redraw the map of Europe at the Congress of Vienna."
