102 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE IN LOVE: THE PRIVATE PASSIONS OF PRINCE CHARLES EDWARD STUART., Douglas, Hugh.
103 Douglas, Hugh. BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE IN LOVE: THE PRIVATE PASSIONS OF PRINCE CHARLES EDWARD STUART.
Alan Sutton, Stroud, 1995, first edition.
242 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0750906057 B&w illustrations. "Starting from the inherited tendencies of his unstable mother, this book follows Charles's involvements with women, from the passionate, illicit affair with his cousin, Louise de Montbazon, following his return from the '45, which resulted in a son, and his cruel arrogance when he took a new mistress replacing her, to his rough treatment of Clementine Walkinshaw, who had nursed him in 1746, and w h o s a c rificed herself for him. She came to live with him, and bore him a daughter, the 'bonnie lass of Albany', his comfort when the dynastic marriage he eventually made with the young Princess Louise of Stolberg came apart, leaving him an e ld er ly cu ck ol d. Judged the wild man of Europe as a result of his scandalous behaviour, Charles's boorishness and drunkenness had cost him the stability he craved, and in his later years he was both ill and lonely, turning to his daughter to s ati sfy hi s lo ngi ng for the love that he had so easily cast aside in his earlier stormy relationships. She became the pride of his life, and when he died four years later, it was with the promise that she would be his rightful heir....this tim ely book pro vi des a re -ex amination of the Scottish hero whose flawed character and lack of success in love undoubtedly influenced his relations with the royal courts of Europe and played an important part in his role in the history of Scotl and and Engla nd, p erh aps contr ibut ing as much to the defeat of the Jacobite cause as 'Butcher' Cumberland's musket fire at Culloden." Samll bump at three corners, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top/botto m of spi ne and flap- fold s, m inor r ubbin g. Very Good-/Very Good

200 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Shirley Ryce) tells of her upbringing as the spoiled daughter of a local bookie and card-game organizer, of her early marriage, and of the fateful meeting that turned a bored housewife and mother into a mob mistress. (She) moved in organized crime circles for almost two decades, and had many mob affairs. Although she knew little of the mobsters' 'business', she saw a great deal of the mob at play. Her break with the Papalias (Hamilton, Ontario crime family) and their cohorts, and her co-operation with the police, marked a dramatic change in ther life, and in 'Mob Mistress' she looks back at who and what she was with self-deprecating frankness. At the same time, she and Dubro both give an informed and clear-eyed view of her former 'playmates' - and of the law-enforcement officers who fight them daily." New York Del Rey / Ballantine First printings. Very Good Cover art by Jim Burns. Map by Steve Palmer.
The four volumes of the "A Handful of Men" quartet - 6 7/8" H. 1. The Cutting Edge - 307 pp, 1993 first printing, ISBN 034538167X. "Beautiful Queen Inos married the loyal stableboy Rap and made him her king. Fifteen years went by, Rap and Inos were comfortable, secure, and truly happy, raising their family in the little backwater kingdom of Krasnegar, well removed from the hurly-burly of great affairs. But in far-off Hub, the old Imperor's health - and, some said, his sanity - deteriorated inexorably. The borderlands were seething. Prince Emshandar - or Shandie, as Rap knew him - found himself leading his grandather's armies into terrible battles where victory and justice hung in gravest doubt. And now the end of the millennium was at hand, ushered in by prophecies of cataclysmic upheaval on a scale never before imagined. All across Pandemia, sensible people tried to dismiss a growing sense of unease as superstitious nonsense. Then a God appeared to Rap and warned him that the prophecies spoke the least of the truth. Devastation was a certainty; total destruction loomed. The very fabric of the world was at risk. And it was all Rap's fault. The last thing in the world Rap wanted was another adventure. And it might be the last thing he would ever get - ." 2. Upland Outlaws - 299 pp, 1993 first printing, ISBN 0345384776. "The power-mad dwarf-sorcerer Zinixo had driven Emshandar V from his throne. He had shattered the ancient Protocol that kept tenuous peace among Pandemia's warlocks. And his conquest had only begun. Somehow the deposed Imperor had escaped his clutches - so far - but Shandie would soon be found. Then the Impire would be Zinixo's alone. Outlying countries would fall beneath his fist. And at long last, he would wreak fabulous revenge upon Rap of Krasnegar. For Zinixo wielded the greatest magic ever imagined: an army of slave-sorcerers bound to serve his every whim - to the death." 3. The Stricken Field - 338 pp, 1994 first printing, ISBN 0345388747. "The 'forces' opposing the tyrant (Zinixo) were paltry, their leaders few. Now as armies both magic and mundane swept across the lands, each rebel leader carried the flame of freedom to a different corner of troubled Pandemia. Shandie rode north - into disaster. Raspnex (Zinixo's warlock uncle) disappeared, pursuing his own secret plans. And Rap toiled through fetid, steaming jungles in search of a powerful troll-witch who did not want to be found - all unaware that his loved ones were far from home, and further yet from any prayer of safety." 4. The Living God - 429 pp, 1994 first printing, ISBN 034538878X. "The sorcerer Zinixo had declared himself Almighty, and none could doubt that the end of the era was at hand. Goblin hordes ravished the Impire. Dragons incinerated entire legions in the space of a heartbeat. The slave-sorcerers of the Covin practiced whatever barbarities Zinixo required. Soon would come midsummer, and the Nordland Moot, and the smell of blood upon the air. Soon the mad dwarf-sorcerer would truly reign supreme - unless Rap of Krasnegar could conjure a miracle at the end of the millennium. Rap and his rebels were recruiting any magic-users the Covin had not yet perverted. And when the time came to move against Zinixo - if it came - they would aim one single, killing blow against the tyrant. It wasn't much of a plan. But it was all they had - ." Exteriors - Part One has light browning to edges of text block and light wear on front hinge; the other books have very light edge wear.

GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND., Dyhouse, Carol.
112 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
London Routledge & Kegan Paul 1981 071000821X / 9780710008213 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good-
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to reinforce lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures and a declining birth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century with its educational implications. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on front board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, fading to spine color - lettering very legible - blank label on front flap, minor rubbing.

113 Edmond, Lauris. BONFIRES IN THE RAIN.
Bridget Williams, (Wellington, 1991).
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photographs. The second volume of New Zealand poet Lauris Edmond's autobiography. "For Lauris Edmond this was married life in its time of greatest fulfilment, with six children in a small New Zealand country town in the fifties. They were rich years, full of laughter and friendship and solidity - the way, she supposed, women's lives were meant to be. But dreams and expectations change, the experiences of loss and uncertainty impinge, and as the sixties became the seventies the world shifted on its axis. Women everywhere were questioning the old, familiar loyalties; for Lauris there was no ignoring the promptings of a talent - and a way of being - too long supressed...the remarkable account of a woman's journey from conformity to a tentative and painful independence; of the growth and death of a marriage, and the questioning and discovery of self. Eloquent and assured, this is autobiography at its most revealing, and confirms Lauris Edmonds as an outstanding prose writer." Interior - slight waviness to top of approx. pages 170 - 225, previous owners name on inside of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, two soft creases on front cover, book slightly cocked, spine uncreased. VG-

239 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "In 1872, Irish-born, seventeen-year-old Henry Ross Halpin arrived in Fort Garry, Manitoba, to take up a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt. Born into a family of journalists, he was a great storyteller and astute observer. His memoirs of his life in the fur trade and of his captivity, combined with his correspondence and annual reports to the Department of Indian Affairs, offer a rare glimpse of life during these turbulent times of change in the West." 118 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.
