"Formed on 14 October, 1925, (this Squadron) was made up of men who worked in the City, who had an interest in aviation and who were f urther moved by a drive to serve their country. Under their first and probably best known commanding officer, the Rt Hon. Freddie Guest, MP, these Auxiliaries, who trained only at weekends, achieved a standard of efficiency which was the e n v y o f o t her 'regular' RAF Squdrons. Formed as a bomber squadron, No.600 became a night-fighter squadron in 1940, equipped with obsolete Blenheims, of which an entire flight was lost over Holland on the night of 10 May, 1940. Later in the S ec on d W or ld Wa r the Squadron served in North Africa, Malta and Italy, becoming the highest-scoring Allied night-fighter squadron of the war, by then flying in Beaufighters and Mosquitos and referred to by the enemy as 'The Fright of the Nig ht' . Dis ba nd ed in 1 945 , it was reformed a year later under Squadron Leader Hayes to become a day-fighter Squadron once again, flying in Spitfires and Gloster Meteors until it was finally disbanded in 1957...." "From November 1942 through to May 1945, the backbone of the USAAF's medium bomber force was provided by the clutch of bomb groups equipped with the B-25 Mitchell. First seeing action in North Africa in the wake of Operation Torch, and in the Battle of El Alamein, the 'bombing twin' proved to be one of the most successful allied combat types i n t h e Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO). Possessing a greater bomb-load, better range and higher top speed than the previous generation of British and American medium bombers that had struggled to defeat the axis powers in-theatre sin c e 19 4 0, t he B-25 was to equip five USAAF bomb groups. From low-altitude ship strafing over the Mediterranean to high-altitude bombing runs on the Po River Valley, the B-25s in the MTO proved themselves to be a most successful brood of combat ai rc raf t. 192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "This book is a combination of stories about the Canadian Avro Lancaster bomber. It is a description of those planes built in Malton, Ontario, by the Victory Aircraft Ltd., and the lives of two aircraft in particular. The first story is that of KB726, now known as the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster, and its crew. This was the aircraft in which Andrew Mynarski earned his Victoria Cross for valour. He gave his life in so doing. The second story is that of FM213, its history, and the story of how it was acquired by Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and how with dedication and the enthusiastic help of the Lancaster Support Club it has been restored to flying condition. It has been given the identity KB726 and dedicated in honour of P/O Andrew Mynarski, V.C., his crew and all Canadian flyers who sacrificed so much in the cause of peace more than 44 years ago. The story is related in three major parts: the Lancaster and Mark X bombers in general; the Canadian No. 6 Group and its squadrons, with special emphasis on the crew of KB726 VR.A of No.419 Squadron (Moose), who on that fateful night of 12/13 June 1944 survived to tell their story; and special documentation of the 9-year restoration program of Lancaster FM213 to its first flight, after 24 years in retirement - the only flying example of this aircraft on the North American continent." 246 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs. "Both Chadwick and the author lived through the same contemporary events, so this biography of the great Avro designer not only deals with aircraft evolution but reflects the atmosphere of those days. No sooner was one design under way than Roy Chadwick was imagining the next and the next, totalling some two hundred. They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. In a swift moving story Penrose depicts Chadwick's career through the changing years from the early revelation of flight to his 54th year when he initiated design of the futuristic Delta-Winged Vulcan, ending with his tragic death in the crash of the Avro Tudor II airliner in 1947." Kew National Archives 2005 1903365872 / 9781903365878 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "The RAF's Air Sea Rescue Service saved thousands of aircrews during the Second World War, often in the most challenging conditions. This wide-ranging, authoritative account draws on over 40 first-hand testimonies and official reports from the National Archives, as well as dramatic, previously unpublished photographs. It explores Air Sea Rescue action in three operational areas - northwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East - and features a wide variety of rescue craft: RAF or Royal Navy launches, airborne lifeboats, aircraft such as the Lysander or specialist amphibians and flying boats. In-depth research into official records reveals how the Service was formed and how it evolved in wartime years; it also provides many fascinating details of the training and equipment on which physical survival was to depend. Several of the compelling individual accounts, from new archival research or interviews with surviving members of the Goldfish Club, appear for the first time in print. They vividly evoke the reality of being shot down at sea, sometimes drifting for days awaiting rescue, and the variety of forms in which this eventually came." Place, date and signature in ink on free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing and two faint rub lines on rear panel.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1977.
111 pp, 9 7/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, maps, drawings, diagrams. "Drawing on sixteen years of research, the author provides an in-depth reference manual on the Luftwaffe at war, a book that moves with ease from broad analysis to fascinating detail. Several important aspects of the Luftwaffe, often ignored in the past, receive particular emphasis: the working of the flak arm, which at the beginning of World War II engaged almost two-thirds of the Luftwaffe's manpower; German pilot training on which the flying units' effectiveness ultimately depended; and tactics used by the various types of fighter and bomber units. Many biographies of senior commanders and illustrations of uniforms and insignia add to the interest of the volume that is an essential addition to the library of any serious student of war history, the aviation enthusiast, and the model airplane maker." "Alongside the Avro Lancaster, Handley Page's Halifax bore the brunt of 'Bomber' Harris' strategic air offensiv e against Nazi Germany, and over 6,000 were built, running to more than 20 variants. Between 1941 and 1945, Bomber Command's Halifaxes dropped over 227,000 tons of bombs on Axis targets and flew almost 80,000 sorties. In (this book) Brian R a p i e r e xamines the varying roles and theatres of operations in which this most versatile but much-maligned aircraft played its part - from the flak-torn night skies over northwest Europe to the swirling sands of the North American desert; f r om t he b le ak wa tery wastes of the North Atlantic to top-secret 'cloak & dagger' operations. Supported by the lucid recollections of former Halifax crewmen and an impressive selection of photographs and tone profiles, (it) provides a fascin at ing in sig ht int o t h e l ife of this famous bomber and those who flew and died in her."
