KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL., Fraser, David.
101 Fraser, David. KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL.
HarperCollins, New York, 1993, book club edition.
601 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060182229 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(S)hows how inspiringly spontaneous and superficially haphazard Rommel's style of leadership could be: 'Rommel believed that war is a re ckless, untidy business, and that the habits of mind of a methodical manager are alien to what is required'. Instead, his hallmarks were boldness of manoeuvre, ferocity of attack, and tenacity in pursuit. These were the qualities he display e d i n h is great battles in the North African desert; they were, David Fraser demonstrates, evident from his earliest battles in the First World War to his last, defending Fortress Europe from the Allied invasion of 1944....Rommel reached a posi ti on in w h ic h he almost inevitably became embroiled in politics. When he realized that the Allied invasion was going to succeed, he realized also that the only way to save Germany was somehow to negotiate a peace settlement. He tried to pres ent Hi t ler - to wh om he had always been devoted, and who had always shown him a particular respect and affection - with the military realities: he was branded a defeatist and ignored. But his opinions, and his apparent links (meticulously dis cuss ed b y Fras er) wi th t he Stauffenberg plotters of July 1944 - one of them, under interrogation, mentioned Rommel as a possible head of post-Hilterian Gemany - condemned him is the eyes of the Fuhrer he had served so loyally. He was offered the c hoice o f tri al b y a Peopl e's Court - a sham of course - or suicide, a state funeral and protection for his family. He chose the latter. Rommel is not, to David Fraser, a flawless hero: his failings as well as his genius are recorded here . But he ha d t hat in stinc t fo r batt le and leadership which set him apart from his contemporaries and places him among the great commanders." THE GATECRASHERS., Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner.
104 Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner. THE GATECRASHERS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1984, first edition.
297 pp + postscript, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718123786 Map endpapers. "Horribly cramped, it lurched sickeningly while being towed and tended to be dripping wet inside. The X-craft midget submarine was hardly the obvious choice of vessel to pitch against the mighty battleship 'Tirpitz' in her Norwegian lair. Like pitching a tadpole against a whale; but in this case, the whale had a soft underbelly and the tadpole a pair of two-ton explosive stings like blisters on its sides. If the sub could survive its nightmarish 1,000-mile haul across the North Sea, Paul Everard would have his chance to gatecrash the fjords - past minefields, patrol craft, shore defences and steel nets - and cripple the ship which Churchi ll had called 'the Beast'. Even if he succeeded, the chances of escaping alive were slim. If he failed, Nick Everard, commanding Arctic convoy PQ19, was in for a pounding. None of his ships could hope to match the firepower of the 'Tirpit z ' o r p i erce her fifteen-inch armour. As 'The Gatecrashers' draws to its thunderous climax, father and son, their lives balancing on a knife-edge, face their final, most searching test. 'The Gatecrashers' is based on the true story of Operat io n S ou rc e : si x X-craft crossed the North Sea in September 1943 to attack the 'Tirpitz, Scharnhorst' and 'Lutzow' in Altenfjord, where they were kept out of bomber range behind formidable defences. Although (this book) stands on its own as a nov el , it is al so th e ninth and last in the Everard series of naval adventures, which started with Nick as a somewhat bloody-minded midshipman at Jutland in 1916. Although fictional, the setting of each story is historically and technically ac cura te. Cap tai n J .E. Moo re, Editor of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', had written: 'I have not found this splendid authenticity in any naval fiction since C.S. Forester's heyday'." Faint cigarette odor. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776., Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman.
105 Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776.
Sarpedon, New York, 1995.
206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 188511902X B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "It is not often realized that in Brooklyn, New York, for a few tense hours in 1776, the fate of the entire United States hung by a thread. An American defeat, the Battle of Brooklyn has been all but neglected in our collective memory for what it earned with the blood of its participants - honored status as one of history's great battles. Besides being the largest cl ash of the Revolution, in terms of both troops and casualties, the action at Brooklyn (sometimes called 'The Battle of Long Island') brought the fledgling American republic to the brink of disaster. At the height of the fighting, only the va l i a n t s acrifice of one regiment - the Marylanders - staved off a catastrophe. The British army, meanwhile, executed a three-pronged surprise assault with admirable professionalism. The wilds of Brooklyn became a killing ground for the Britis h an d He ss i an troops who were able to begin the war convinced the colonials would not be able to stand against their onslaught of bullets and steel. While a drama of rare instensity on its surface, the Battle of Brooklyn also holds a larger si gn ifi ca nce : t he Ki ng's men did not invade Brooklyn to face other kings' men; they were sent to fight a population. Rules of engagement were uncertain and passions for and against the rebellion ran high. When the smoke cleared at Brooklyn, i n 1 776, th e mo dern ag e of 'democratic warfare' had begun....The Battle of Brooklyn was a victory for the British Empire. But contained within the triumph was a demonstration of the type of American resolve and courage that would eventually r esul t in inde pende nce f or t he Un ited States." Faint cigarette odor. BLACK MAY., Gannon, Michael.
108 Gannon, Michael. BLACK MAY.
HarperCollins, New York, 1998, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060178191 B&w photographs. "In May 1943, Allied sea and air forces won a stunning, dramatic, and vital victory over the largest and most powerful submarine force ever sent to sea, sin king forty-one German U-boats and damaging thirty-seven others. It was the forty-fifth month of World War II, and by the end of May the Germans were forced to acknowledge defeat and recall almost all of their remaining U-boats from the major t r a f f i c lanes of the North Atlantic. At U-Boat Headquarters in Berlin, despondent naval officers spoke of 'Black May'. It was a defeat from which the German U-boat fleet never recovered. 'Black May' is a triumph of scholarship and narrativ e , an i mp or ta nt work of history, and a great sea story. (The author) has done enormous research and produced the most thoroughly documented study ever done of these battles. In his compelling historical saga, the people are as significant as t he te chn ica l i nfo rmation. Given the strategic importance of the events of May 1943, it is natural to ask, How did Black may happen and why? Who or what was responsible? Were new Allied tactics adopted or new weapons employed? This book ans wer s th ose ques tion s an d many others. Drawing on original documents in German, British, U.S., and Canadian archives, as well as interviews with surviving participants, Gannon describes the exciting sea and air battles, frequently taking th e re ader insi de t he U- boats them selves, aboard British warshps, onto the decks of torpedoed merchant ships, and into the cockpits of British and U.S. aircraft. Throughout, Gannon tells the Black May story from both the German and Allied pers pecti ves, often using the a ctual words of captains and crew. Finally he allows the reader to 'listen in' on secretly recorded conversations of captured U-boat men in POW quarters during the same incredible month, giving intimate and moving acces s to t he th oughts and e motions of se amen t hat is unparalleled in naval literature." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small slight bump at top edge of front board and at top of rear hinge, minor browning at some edges, short remainder mark on botto m of te xt bloc k. Dust jacket has mi nor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, three small marks (color pencil) on inside surface. Very Good/Very Good+

THE EAST INDIA COMPANY: A HISTORY., Gardner, Brian.
109 Gardner, Brian. THE EAST INDIA COMPANY: A HISTORY.
Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1971, first edition.
319 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 024664043X B&w plates, maps. "There has never been a company like the East India Company: it ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population, possessed its own army and navy, its own c ivil service, and even its own church. It became the greatest military power in Asia and had a revenue larger than that of Great Britain itself. This is the story of the London merchants who, in their persistent and dogged quest for trade w i t h t h e East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French and the collapse of the authority of the Indian emperors. The Company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Dlive and Warren Hastings, an d th e a cq ui sitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire careers in its service. There were the conquests of the Wellesleys, the intrigues and battles for power with the British government, the prejudice and envy inspired b y t he re tu rn hom e o f wealthy retired employees, and the compromise which ended in the appointment of government selected Governors-General. The story of the East India Company is one of adventure, triumph and disaster, pride and loyalty, that spa ns more th an two hund red years of British history: it is also the story of the foundation of the British Empire in India." ROBERT CLIVE., Garrett, Richard. (Robert Clive.)
110 Garrett, Richard. (Robert Clive.) ROBERT CLIVE.
Arthur Baker, London, (1976).
224 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "There were many different Clives. The gentle lover his wife knew; the fearless and often unorthodox army leader; the astute polititician who tangled with the directors of the East India Company; and the generous, dutiful son who so frequently came to the aid of his economically inept father. In his excellent biography, Richard Garrett considers all of them. He traces Clive's spectacular career from its early days on the battlefields to the years of power, when he could enthrone or depose an Indian prince according to the needs of the moment. The author describes such battles as Plassey and the siege of Arcot, and he deals with the tragic climax at the end of Cl ive's ca reer when Parliament very nearly brought about his ruin..." 3" sq. area of very light browning on free front endpaper - probably caused by previous owners bookplate. 206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. Fighting uphill battles against 'the powers that be', Gibbs remained utterly dedicated to the airborne torpedoes as a weapon of war against shipping, and succeeded in changing not only tactical but also strategic policy - very rare indeed for a junior officer. But his book also gives new insight into the often haphazard way war was waged in the Mediterranean, the daily dangers, the inveitable losses." 113 Gibbs, Peter. THE BATTLE OF ALMA.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, (1963), Ist edition.
194 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps, plans, photos, reproductions. "The Russians and Turks went to war in 1854. Britain and France sent armies to aid Turkey, but by the time they arrived in Bulgaria the Turks had already driven the R ussians out. However, the allies were determined to fight: they landed on the Crimean Peninsula, moved overland toward the Russian naval base at Sebastopol, and - 60,000 strong - approached the river Alma. The Russians came out to meet them , d r a w n up on the heights rising from the bank of the river. The battle that followed was a soldier's battle - unplanned and unco-ordinated. It was also the decisive battle of the Crimean War. This book describes not only the actual fightin g b ut t he e ve nts that led to the war, the soldiers who took part in the conflict, and the significance of the Alma in European history." ISBN 0948130628 "This little Victorian gem was (first) published in 1854, the first year of the Crimean War....The accounts of the battles are cursory, but the real fascination of the book lies in the biographical details of some two hundred officers who were killed or who died in those first few months of the war, written as they are in that flowery Victorian prose. They contain a great deal that would be of interest to the historian, genealogist and researcher as well as to regimental records. There is a separate list of officers wounded, divided in two parts; one for those wounded up to Balaklava (25th October) and the other for subsequent casualties. Toronto McClelland & Stewart 2006 0771035470 / 9780771035470 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(O)n 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The divisional commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: 'It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.' Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad - the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies, the British, Canadian, French, and German, were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. The heroism of the Dominion troops moved British prime minister David Lloyd George to write: 'The Canadians played a part of such distinction that thenceforth they were marked as storm troops. Coming into the line, they prepared for the worst.' After four and a half months of fighting, the Allied armies had not reached the line they set for themselves for the first day of battle. In this vivid, deeply researched account of one of history's most destructive battles, (the author) tracks (it) through the experiences of footsoldiers, generals, and everyone in between. Interwoven with photographs, journal entries, original maps, and documents from every stage and level of planning, (this book) is the most authoritative and affecting account of this bloody turning point in the Great War." Besides the chronlogy itself, this new, three-volumes-in-one edition includes the original and extensive indices to events, places and participants which add to its considerable value as a work of reference."
