THE BUMBLE BEE PRINCE. A JUNIOR PROGRAMS BOOK., Lancourt, Saul. (Alexander Pushkin.)
105 Lancourt, Saul. (Alexander Pushkin.) THE BUMBLE BEE PRINCE. A JUNIOR PROGRAMS BOOK.
New York Garden City Publishing 1940 Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Sheilah Beckett.
Unpaginated (approx. 36 pp), 9 1/2" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w and colour illustrations throughout, some musical notation. "This is a story of old Russia, when that faraway land was ruled by the jolly Tzar Saltan. It is the story of lovely young Militrissa who became the Tzar's bride and of Nastasia, her jealous sister, who plotted against her with their wicked nurse, Barbarischa. For a time their schemes were successful, and poor Militrissa and her little son, Prince Guidon, were tossed on the sea for many days and nights with only a barrel as their boat. How they were finally saved and how the young Prince was magically transformed into a bumble bee is all told in this exciting book. Based on an original poem by Alexander Pushkin, this bright, fanciful fairy tale has been brought joyously to life by the Junior Programs opera, 'The Bumble Bee Prince'. The opera, with its beautiful Rimsky-Korsakov music, is a favorite of children everywhere. This book follows its action closely and includes many of the principal musical themes." The first b&w illustration (the heading for Chapter One) has been fairly neatly colored in by a previous owner - all other illustrations are untouched. Unpaginated, 11 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated in full color. "When they went into battle they wore no costly armor, just birchbark wrapped around their legs, and so they were called 'Birkebeiners', which means 'Birchleggers'. It is the year 1206, and deep in the snow-covered mountains and valleys of Norway, the fiercest warriors in the land struggle to ski a baby to safety. They race against the greed and inequity of the rich, against the very weather of Norway. They race as the only way to save a child prince and bring peace to their country. Here is an untold story of both bravery and tenderness. Mary Azarian's strong, sure woodcuts capture the warmth and ruggedness of medieval life, while Lise Lunge-Larsen's dramatic telling is direct and mesmerizing. Read this book on a dark winter's night, next to a roaring fire, and imagine the long, cold race of history's first famous skiers." A few tiny dints on bottom edge of boards. THE SINGING SWANS AND OTHER STORIES., Marris, Ruth. Illustrated by Miles Thistlethwaite.
117 Marris, Ruth. Illustrated by Miles Thistlethwaite. THE SINGING SWANS AND OTHER STORIES.
Heinemann, London, 1975, first edition.
80 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "The three long stories from Ireland that make up this book all have the kind of magic that makes you hold your breath with anticipation - . The first and best-known story, 'The Singing Swans', is the tragic tale of the four children of one of the old Irish kings, who were turned into swans by their jealous stepmother and forced to wander over the land for nine hundred years. 'The Legend of Knockgrafton' is a tale of fairy mischief. Lusmore the hunchback happens to please the fairies and they take away his hump - but the disagreeable fellow who tries to copy him comes a cropper. 'The Sea-Maiden' is a story with many twists and turns, in which the young man Cathal undergoes strange adventures and has to kill a three-headed monster before he can win the princess. These are very old stories, but Ruth Marris tells them as if they were new, writing with such freshness and vividness that we can almost see the green hills in which they are set. Miles Thistlethwaite's (20) beautiful drawings add to the power of the stories." MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION., Matthews, Caitlin.
120 Matthews, Caitlin. MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION.
London Arkana 1987 1850630526 / 9781850630524 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Chesca Potter.
205 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "On one level (this) is a literary guide and deals with the mythological patterns which underlie the Mabinogion. On another, it is a deep exploration of the Western Mysteries as they emerge from the tales of the Four Branches, of Colhwch and Olwen and Taliesin. Within these stories lie the identities of two major figures of the native tradition: Mabon, the Wondrous Youth who is lost and found, and Modron, his mother, the Great Goddess herself. Here the initiatory pattern of Britain's inner guardians is revealed in the Succession of the Pendragons; the release of Mabon is affected with the help of the Totem Beasts, before the birth of time; while the cosmic harp of the Wondrous Youth ushers in the Aquarian Age. Drawing on this first exploration of the Mabinogion, the reader can trace for himself the archetypes and mythological themes from which these medieval stories, themselves descendants of proto-Celtic oral tradition, are derived." Interior - very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, soft crease at top part of front hinge, light browning to edges of text block, small soft corner crease on rear cover, spine flat and uncreased, ISBN label on rear cover.
