CURSE OF THE DEATH'S HEAD: THE STORY OF THE SS-TOTENKOPF DIVISION., Butler, Rupert.
101 Butler, Rupert. CURSE OF THE DEATH'S HEAD: THE STORY OF THE SS-TOTENKOPF DIVISION.
Arrow, (London, 1989).
253 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs. "They were feared, hated and respected as one of the premier divisions of the Waffen SS, wearing the sinister silver insignia of the Death's Head on the collar of their black uniforms, to signify 'SS Totenkopf Division'. One of the most powerful and destructive military forces in history, many in its ranks began their training not in military academies but as concentration camp guards. Their brutal architect was Alsatian-born former psychiatric-clinic inmate Theodor Eike, who rose to become the ruthless, indomitable commander of the 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf. In the early days of the war in Russia, the Division covered itself with glory for Hitler as a cruel, fearless technician of war. In defeat, however, the men of Totenkopf crashed to shame and ignominy - leaving behind a legacy of loathing unique in the annals of the battlefield." Interior - pages browning lightly, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear - a little more at bottom of spine, small punch hole at bottom corner of front cover, soft crease on front cover and on rear hinge, light creases on spine, book very lightly cocked. 231 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "With war on America's horizon in 1941, LeRoy Gover was determined to be a fighter pilot. Lacking the qualifications that would guarantee him U.S. Army Air Corps wings, the young Californian signed on with the Royal Air Force. By the end of the war, Gover was one of the most experienced American pilots in England, having flown with both the RAF and the Air Corps. (This book) skillfully weaves together the young fighers letters and diary entries to create a vivid portrait of the kind of man who helped win Word War II. By the end of his war, Gover had flown 159 combat missions and had received the Silver Star, three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and eight Air Medals." Dust jacket has very light rubbing.

London Bison 1990 0861246209 / 9780861246205 Very Good Good+
192 pp, folio (14 1/2" H). "Created, ordered and led by Hitler, the state apparatus of Nazi Germany rigorously controlled all aspects of life in the Third Reich from cradle to grave. To maintain his iron grip on the German people through the ministries of his dictatorial government, Hitler surrounded himself with a small clique of fanatical, devoted acolytes. Men such as Heinrich Himmler, the much-feared chief of the Waffen-SS and organiser of the Holocaust, and Hermann Goering, the bombastic head of the Luftwaffe, wielded enormous power and held the fate of millions in their corrupt hands. (This book) tells the inside story of the Third Reich, looking at the personalities, roles and rivalries of Hitler's closest associates: Joseph Goebbels, the astute propaganda minister; Joachim von Ribbentrop, the Reich's chief diplomat; Rudolph Hess, Hitler's disgraced deputy; Albert Speer, the manager of the Reich's economy; Baldur von Schirach, the fanatic who moulded the thoughts of the youth of Germany; Alfred Rosenberg, the man who created the philosophical framework for the ideology of Nazisim; Martin Bormann, Hitler's enigmatic advisor; and Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress. Written by ( two) noted Dutch historians, (it) reveals the truth behind the fascade of the Third Reich and is an important contribution to the literature of the Nazi era. Illustrated with 300 photographs, many in colour, this book is a must for any student of the rise and fall of the Third Reich and its leaders." Book is slightly cocked, has light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners. Dust jacket has light rubbing, several small edge tears with old tape repairs, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny dints on front panel, a few small faint line indentations on rear panel.

THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL., Caskie, Donald C.
105 Caskie, Donald C. THE TARTAN PIMPERNEL.
London Oldbourne 1959 Reprint. Good+ Good
270 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "On Sunday, 10 June 1940, the Rev. Donald C. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the church and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machine-gunned from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscripted to service. The Seamen's Mission became a vital link on the escape route for prisoners-of-war and soldiers escaping from Dunkirk. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Spain. He collected military information for the Allies. Denounced by a British traitor, Dr. Caskie was banished to Grenoble where he continued his work as an 'underground padre'. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death in a Nazi Court he passed through seven prisons and was saved from death by a German padre. Throughout all his perils (he) was sustained by the Christian Faith and inspired by native patriotism. Still the Scottish Minister to Paris, he has saved the books in which he recorded the names of his guests of war. Among the legion of men he helped were Whitney Straight, the millionaire sportsman and R.A.F. ace, and Redvers Prior, M.P. His story is enlivened by Scottish humour and brilliant character studies of his comrades and enemies." Areas of light browning/foxing on end papers, one corner with a slight small bump, light wrinkling and colour fading at top/bottom of spine, some light colour fading on top edge of rear board, light browning on bottom edge of boards, browning and faint tiny foxing marks on edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has small chips and tears (some with old tape on inside), light rubbing/soiling - mainly on rear panel, edge creases, very light edge wear, newspaper clipping tipped in on front flap.

108 Chapman, Eddie. Foreword by Frank Owen. THE REAL EDDIE CHAPMAN STORY.
London Tandem Good
253 pp, 7 1/8" H. c1966. In 1940, safecracker Eddie Chapman offered his services to the German High Command as a spy. His first mission was to blow up the de Havilland works in Hatfield. "What is now revealed for the first time is that Chapman had immediately upon landing made contact with senior officials of the Air Ministry who listened with stunned silence to his story. Shortly after, a German reconnaissance plane which was allowed over to photograph the results of his mssion, reported that the buildings were in ruins and smoke was still rising. At Hatfield, the camouflage experts quietly congratulated themselves on having made it look as though an explosives expert had been at work! Chapman was working for his own country at the risk of his life. Soon after he was shipped back to Germany through Lisbon, where Hitler, grateful for the blow struck against England, awarded him the Iron Cross. For two years, Chapman, behaving like a hero of the Third Reich, spied on the Germans and constantly fed information back to British Intelligence, before being parachuted in for a second time to report on the range of the V-bombs. His true story makes incredible reading." Rear cover advertises the movie "Triple Cross", starring Christopher Plummer as Eddie Chapman and Yul Brynner as Colonel von Grunen. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. Toronto Alfred A. Knopf 2002 067697354X / 9780676973549 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease down front flap at fore-edge, one small edge tear with crease, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Crecy 1993 0947554289 / 9780947554286 Very Good+ Very Good-
381 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "The story is told by Aileen Clayton who was selected to work with the Y-Service, the branch of the RAF responsible for the interception of enemy communications, at the beginning of the war. Known at the time as 'Mike' Morris, she was the first WAAF to be commissioned as an intelligence officer and was the first to be awarded the MBE for her service in this field. Her account of the development of the Y-Service and its activities in the Battle of Britain, in the Western Desert, the Middle East and the Mediterranean is a major contribution to our knowledge of the intelligence aspects of the Second World War. It is also the dramatic and frequently moving story of a very young woman doing often dangerous and increasingly complex work in what was then very much a man's world, and of a body of talented, devoted and courageous men and women whose work frequently took them into front line conditions, whether they were suffering aerial bombardment on the South Coast of England, or advancing with the tanks in the Western Desert, or taking part in the landings at Salerno and Anzio. Because of the secrecy in which their work was shrouded during the war and for years afterwards their contribution to the Allied war effort has gone largely unrecognised. (This) is finally and above all a tribute by a remarkable woman to a tenacious and gifted band of men and women." A line of very small creases on front free endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on rear flap, rubbing on panels, three timy edge tears.

118 Cockett, Richard. TWILIGHT OF TRUTH: CHAMBERLAIN, APPEASEMENT AND THE MANIPULATION OF THE PRESS.
London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1989 0297795481 / 9780297795483 First Edition Very Good Very Good
229 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto neglected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enlist the newspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite to any agreement between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal contacts to curb the press, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs. (This book) throws new light on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain's entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-MI5 officer who ran the Conservative Research Department. At Chamberlain's behest, Ball ran a scurrilous, anti-semitic newspaper called 'Truth' to slander his political opponents and even members of his own Cabinet. The involvement of Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous of the contemporary press proprietors, is also fully revealed for the first time. Using original material from the Public Record Office and private archives, (it) exposes the way in which the peculiarly English customs and habits that governed relations between government and press became institutionalized in the 1930s to the permanent advantage of the government. (It) is thus a study of the system of government manipulation of the press - a system that exists to this day - as well as of Chamberlain and appeasement." Light browning to pages and edges of textblock, light wrinkling at top of spine, very light rubbing on boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

119 Coffey, Thomas M. DECISION OVER SCHWEINFURT: THE U.S. 8th AIR FORCE BATTLE FOR DAYLIGHT BOMBING.
David McKay, New York, 1977, book club edition.
341 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, map. "(D)escribes moment by moment (the) August 17, 1943 raid as well as the second Schweinfurt mission, October 14, 1943 - the two most savage battles in the history of air warfare. It also describes day by day the lives and deaths of the men on both sides who faced each other not only in these but in other epic battles. Yet (this) is more than the story of the two famous Schweinfurt missions: it is also the story of the development of the U.S. 8th Air Force in England, and the most crucial combat tests of the American daylight precision bombing strategy. Citing hundreds of previously unpublished documents, the book reveals for the first time the full struggle to establish this daring American strategy against the conviction of many authoritative people that it would not work. These people included British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, all his air experts, and many generals and admirals in the U.S. Army and Navy. American and British strategists were arguing this issue when, in February, 1942, Brig, Gen. Ira C. Eaker and his staff arrived in England to create the 8th Bomber Command. When Eaker launched the first great Schweinfurt mission eighteen months later, the matter was still undecided. Could the B-17s battle their way through the waves of Luftwaffe fighters and destroy the Schweinfurt factories? Or would the bombers be turned back, exposing the American Air Forces strategy as a dismal failure? This was the issue that produced the crucial decision over Schweinfurt." Dust jacket has wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor edge wear, slight browning to spine and flap-folds. Good+/Good+

"...vividly brings the year's events to life, recounting not merely the major episodes but spotlighting little-known characters caught up in them. There is the heroic Norwegian, Theodor Broch, mayor of Narvik; Rene de Chambrun, a young French infantry officer serving in the Maginot Line who finds himself dispatched to the White House to plead his country's cause after the Fall of France; Polly Peabody, a young New York socialite who organised a field hospital, brought it to Europe and found herself flung from Scandianvia to Vichy, from occupied Paris to the London blitz. Through the eyes of young Captain Molders of the Luftwaffe we see the Germans' incredulity when Hitler's decision not to invade England may well have lost him the whole war..." Small shallow bump to top edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, dust staining to top of textblock, tiny bump to bottom rear corner. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color. VG-/VG-
