374 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0434074101 "Nearly twenty years after the present wave of conflict began in Northern Ireland, the Provisional IRA is still an active destabilising force within the United Kingdom. Yet despite the huge loss of life and the consequent political distortions and upheavals it has created, remarkably little is known about it. This authoritiative new book, the first full-length study to be undertaken since the Troubles began i n 1 9 6 9 , examines the IRA in depth, analysing its leaders, its objectives and structure. Aided by numerous, unusually frank interviews with the men who run the organisation and key figures in the Security Forces, the authors trace the IRA's pr og r es si on f ro m disarray in the early 1960s to powerful political force in the late 1980s. They explore the movement's inner workings, explaining the commitment and life of its participants and shedding new light on some of the recent lan dma rks i n t he oft en blo od y history of Republicanism; internment, the hunger strikes, the mainland bombing campaign, the development of the IRA's dual strategy of 'armalite and ballotbox'....a uniquely informative and thought-provoking book, o ne w hich wi ll i tse lf p rov e a lan dmark in the study of Irish history." THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE, AD 284-430., Cameron, Averil.
7 Cameron, Averil. THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE, AD 284-430.
Cambridge, Massachusetts Harvard University Press 1993 067451193X / 9780674511934 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
238 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "Marked by the shift of power from Rome to Constantinople and the Christianization of the Empire, this pivotal era requires a narrative and interpretative history of its own. Averil Cameron, an authority on later Roman and early Byzantine history and culture, captures the vigor and variety of the fourth century, doing full justice to the enormous explosion of recent scholarship. After 100 year of political turmoil, civil war, and invasion, the Roman Empire that Diocletian inherited in A.D. 284 desperately needed the radical restructuring he gave its government and defenses. His successor Constantine, continued the revolution by adopting - for himself and the Empire - a vibrant new religion: Christianity. The fourth century was an era of wide cultural diversity, represented by figures as different as Julian the Apostate and St. Augustine. Cameron provides a vivid narrative of its events and explores central questions about the economy, social structure, urban life, and cultural multiplicity of the extended Empire. Examining the transformation of the Roman world into a Christian culture, she takes note of the competition between Christianity and Neoplatonism. And she paints a lively picture of the new imperial city of Constantinople. By combining literary, artistic, and archaeological evidence, she has produced an exciting record of social change." ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS., Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D.
9 Carroll, Steven B. & Salt, Steven D. ECOLOGY FOR GARDENERS.
Portland Timber Press 2005 0881926116 / 9780881926118 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Errol D. Hooper Jr.
328 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Colour photographs, b&w drawings. "(T)he authors look at the structure, development, genetics, and reproduction of plants, the most prominent actors in garden ecosystems. They describe other garden organisms, focusing on those with the most influential roles - insects, nematodes, and microorganisms - as well as garden denizens ranging from microscopic prions to elephants. (They) explore nutrient cycles, sunlight, air, water, and the soil - the physical environment within which garden organisms live and function - and they consider the ways plants function in their environment and form communities. They then examine the intricate interactions among garden-dwelling organisms, ranging from the harmful to the beneficial. Once this groundwork is laid, they introduce humans into the garden ecosystem and consider how gardeners can use ecological principles to wisely manage their garden ecosystems. Throughout the book, the authors cite hundreds of examples drawn from personal experience and from the gardening and ecological literature. It becomes clear that gardens - whether a group of potted plants on a patio, a few beds carved out of a lawn, or extensive plantings over several acres - are indeed connected to the natural world in endless and important ways." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny dents on spine and hinges.

THE STORY OF DOMINION SQUARE. PLACE DU CANADA., Collard, Edgar Andrew.
10 Collard, Edgar Andrew. THE STORY OF DOMINION SQUARE. PLACE DU CANADA.
Don Mills, Ontario Longman Canada 1971 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
63 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Here is a wealth of fascinating history, going back to the time when Dominion Square was a cemetery outside Montreal. Dr. Collard tells the story of the square's famous buildings, past and present. We visit a political rally when Sir John A. Macdonald was mobbed; we see the Winter Carnival's crowning spectacle, the storming of the Ice Palace. The 'principal presence' in the square is the Sun Life head office, one of the most massive office buildings in the world. For a number of seasons this huge structure served as the nesting place of a pair of falcons, who evidently mistook it for a mountain. And during the war it was the custodian of the securities of the British Government. Its giant carillon, once 'the Voice of Expo', can be heard every day in a twenty-minute concert. In 1966 the southern half of the square was renamed Place du Canada, and bordering it arose the C.P.R.'s modern and beautiful Chateaux Champlain and plaza, joined to the square by a wide pedestrian arch. To read (this) book is to visit the historic heart of Canada's greatest metropolis." Very minor edge wear, small light scuff mark on front panel. Dust jacket has three edge tears archivally taped, light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

373 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of the Toronto General Hospital is intimagely and inseparably associated with the development of the city of Toronto and the support of its citizens. Dr. Crosbie traces the history of the Hospital from its founding in York, through its humble facilities on King Street, to the ornate Victorian structure on Gerrard, and finally to the great institution which today dominates the corner of College Street and University Avenue. Its early services to the victims of the War of 1812 and of the cholera epidemics of the nineteenth century, the problems of financing, the challenges of two world wars, and its relationship with the University and its medical schools are just a few of the factors governing the direction taken by the institution. Throughout this chronicle, the achievements of a distinguished body of medical staff in the fields of medical practice, research, and teaching are described in a context of contribution to the University and the city of Toronto, a well as to the international medical scene." University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1992.

ISBN 0802076807 "The reasons for the emergence and establishment of military orders on the various borders of Western Christendom and within the West are discussed, as are the military functions and roles which they assumed. The orders made a major contribution to the defence and expansion of Western Chistendom, and this required considerable funds and reserves of manpower. This book describes the ways in which these were obtained, and giv e s a n a c count of extensive governmental machinery developed to enable the orders to carry out their tasks effectively. Although their members combined a military with a monastic way of life, the military orders are shown to have differed from o th e r re l ig i o us foundations not only in their daily routine but also in their adminstrative structure and in their predominantly lay membership." This profusely illustrated study by Philip Haythornthwaite sets out to demonstrate Wellington's flexibility by showing the changes he employed in the various theatres in which he was active. Every aspect of his armies is explored - from the officers to the common soldiers; from the infantry to the cavalry; from military clergymen to the me dical services; as well as the attitude, morale and experiences of the troops. 306 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715389629 B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "The bus industry is going through a period of rapid change, and this is best understood against the background of events, for decisions taken a s long ago as 1916 still influence its structure, and the way busmen think about their function. There are many strands to the story, the longest taking us back to the appearance of the hackney carriage and the stage coach in the seventee n t h c e n t u r y. There are the combine companies of the inter-war years, and their battle with the four main line railways for control of their services; there are the 'pirates', old and new; and there are the municipal transport fleets, stemm in g us u al ly f ro m tr amway operations. We have to go to nineteenth century France for the origin of the name 'omnibus' itself. Professor Hibbs discusses the effect of technical advances on the provision of public services, and writes of tick et sy ste ms , t ime tab les , fle et names and liveries, and some of the odder regulations that govern operations and the travelling public. There is an objective discussion of methods of licensing and control, and of the economic and political ba ckg rou nd o f t he b us o pera tors . But this is the story of the men and women as well as motor vehicles; of shrewd pioneers, international financiers, trade unionists and well-known politicians. Not least it is the story of the crews on the b uses , fo r who m th e ind ustry is n ot ju st a li ving, but a way of life as well....(this new edition includes a chapter that brings) the story from 1968 to 1988."
