He was born in 1780, and his father died in 1789 - ki lled, according to Wetherell, in a skirmish with Eskimos in Davis Strait. Wetherell himself died, probably in New York, sometime after 1834. He left behind him an autobiography, in three volumes of manuscript amounting altogether to a thous a n d p a g es. It had been the object of a fruitless search by students of the period until, a few years ago, Mrs Anne Klein of New York, an enthusiastic collector of rare nautical books, discovered it at the New York auction of the library of th e la te Ga br ie l Wells." A fascinating look at life at sea in during the Napoleonic era, including conditions in the prisons for sailors in France. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the most illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that battleship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Sea, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carrier attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turned into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an accurate and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. "Practically everyone knows of HMS Cossack's mag nificent exploit in a Norwegian fiord in February 1940 when her crew rescued 299 captive British merchant seamen from the Altmark. Cossack was just one of 27 Tribal Class destroyers which served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian an d C a n a d i an Navies from 1938 to 1969. They were considered by many to be the finest of their type. The Tribals probably saw more acion over a longer period of time, and over a greater area of the globe, than any other class of destroyer. "During the Battle of the Atlantic, Dr. George Hendry had just finished performing two major surgical operations on board the destroyer HMCS Ottawa when his ship was ambushed by 13 German U-boats. Canadian warships like Ottawa had inadequate radar sets that were incapable of detecting submarines approaching in the dark. On September 13, 1942, U-91 stole in and torpedoed Ottawa, sinking her in 20 minutes. Utterly exhausted, Dr. Hendry was lost along with 113 of his shipmates. George Hendry was a much-loved man, a great university athlete, and a very good doctor. Unfortunately, he was also naive and too trusting. "This is the definitive account of the loss of HMS Captain and the decade-long public controversy in parliament and the press which preceded and led to the building of the ship in unprecedented circumstances. HMS Captain was a very important vessel because she was the first sea-going turret warship built to provide all-round fire power. She was the first in a line of innovative designs heralding the great development of warships that reached its peak before World War Two. The lengthy controversy involved a row between Captain Cowper Phipps Coles, RN, the designer of Captain and inventor of the turntable turret gun for warships, and the Admiralty Constructor, Edward Reed, who regarded the design of the vessel as potentially dangerous. Each had his supporters, and the Admiralty made a fatal compromise, for on the night of 6/7 September 1870, only four months after being commissioned, the new ship capsized in a gale off Finisterre and sank immediately. The death toll of British seamen was greater than at the Battle of Trafalgar. (The author) has previously written on the ship and the tragedy, but he has recently discovered new and previously unknown information that changes history in relation to the loss of the ship - information that appears to have been suppressed at the court martial of the 18 surviviors."
