YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
3 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

THE BANTAMS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR I., Allinson, Sidney.
4 Allinson, Sidney. THE BANTAMS: THE UNTOLD STORY OF WORLD WAR I.
Howard Baker, London, (1981), Ist edition.
287 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..." Previous owner's embossed blindstamp on dedication page, p.63 and free rear endpaper, very small faint mark on pages 65-68. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight darkening to spine, 1" triangular piece missing from bottom of rear panel, tiny stain at top of rear flap. VG/G

8 Baker, Betty / Moote & Hodgson, Orangeville, Ontario. 1968 COOKING CLUB CALENDAR - ADVERTISING PIECE FOR MOOTE & HODGSON LIMITED, ORANGEVILLE, ONTARIO.
1967 Soft Cover Very Good+
Approx. 11 3/8" H x 8" W. This calendar was an advertising piece for Moote & Hodgson Limited of Orangeville, Ontario. The binding quite cleverly consists of a piece of flexible 'gold' coloured metal, with a hole for hanging at top, which loops through all the pages of the calendar. When the 'gold' pencil that slots into the loop is removed, the pages can be taken out and re-ordered (the instructions suggest that each finished month be placed at the back of the calendar in sequence). The twelve sheets for the months each form a pocket at the bottom (for storing receipts, recipes, notes, etc.) and have a recipe illustrated with a sepiatone photograph and a menu on the front. On the reverse are additional recipes following that month's theme and a tip from Betty Baker. The calendar cover consists of a folded sheet (just over 6 1/2" H at the front) with a pasted on colour picture of a fisherman and the company details on the front. The full-sized rear section has a form for filling in the "Household Budget" on the inside (unused) and information on "Home Freezing - Fruits and Vegetables" on the reverse. The monthly recipe themes are: January - Sandwiches Supreme; February - Soup So Warm; March - Fish 'n' Things; April - Meat Miracles; May - Good ol' Cookie; June - Delectable Vegetables; July - Dessert Magic; August - Beverage Coolers; September - Countdown on Coffee Cakes; October - Thanksgiving Delights; November - Fashionable Meat Dishes; December - Salads Superb. Each found a way through the maze of courses, cases, debates and exams. Then they fanned out across the country to careers as diverse as their beginnings. 1991. Toronto HarperCollins 2006 0002008122 / 9780002008129 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "When she died in London at the age of ninety, a survivor of one of the most tumultuous epochs in history, Madame Tussaud had travelled far from her inauspicious beginnings in Strasbourg as the daughter of a common soldier and a housekeeper. Moving to Paris as a child, Marie climbed through the ranks of French society as the protegee of charmismatic showman artist Philippe Curtius, and witnessed the French Revolution in all its grisly detail. She survived the Terror and moved to London, where she struggled to find a foothold amidst the desperate competition of showmen from all over Europe. Her touring years were studded with drama and danger, and twice she nearly lost her life and livelihood - first in a shipwreck and then at the hands of a rampaging mob in the Reform riots of 1831. The core of her exhibition was Revolutionary relics given extra potency by her victim survivor status and the famous claims that she was forced to cast the death masks of Marie Antoinette and other members of the royal family, whom she had known personally when employed to teach modelling at Versailles. But did her desire to make a compelling and commercial spectacle of the events unfolding around her extend to moulding her own dramatic story? The story of a business empire sculpted out of the ashes of one of history's most turbulent periods reveal a woman who - in exploiting the human fascination with the rich, the famous and the infamous - was far ahead of her time." Very small bump at bottom corner of both boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new."
