6 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

THE DESERT GENERALS., Barnett, Correlli.
8 Barnett, Correlli. THE DESERT GENERALS.
William Kimber, London, 1960, second edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The first portrait is of Sir Richard O'Connor, who won the fantastic victories over Graziani's Italians in 1940. The author shows that th e credit for the daring and unorthodox planning is due to O'Connor and not to Wavell; he puts forward a convincing argument to show that Tripoli could have been taken - and the North African campaign ended - in February, 1941, if the Prime Mi n i s t e r had not diverted forces to Greece. Of Sir Alan Cunningham, first commander of 8th Army, there is a picture of imaginative insight. The author shows that the crisis in the 'Crusader' battle of November, 1941, was caused by twenty years o f ne gl ec t a nd traditionalism, although the brunt fell on Cunningham, then a sick man. In Sir Neil Ritchie, next 8th Army commander, the author sees personified the characteristics of the Establishment - rigidity, social charm and professiona l c on ser vat ism . H e shows how Ritchie was beaten in the summer battles of 1942 by the dynamism of German leadership. With 8th Army in danger of complete collapse, the C.-in-C., Sir Claude Auchinleck, took over direct command in order to try t o sa ve the Midd le E as t a nd its vital oil. In the next few weeks he won a great but never officially acknowledged victory in the First Battle of Alamein. The author believes that this was the true turning point of the war, making possible the ' Torch ' l andi ngs i n Fre nch Nor th Africa. Auchinleck's reward was dismissal - as, the author shows, a political scapegoat. Although Field-Marshal Montgomery has recounted his own story, there is another side to it, told here for the first tim e. Th e au thor discus ses th e pl ans f or Montgomery's first victory of Alam Halfa which had been made by Auchinleck and his officers; he submits that the Battle of Alamein was not impeccably handled, and that Rommel's escape afterwards was not o wing to rain , but to the hesita nt, ' broad front' pursuit - the very error of which Montgomery was to accuse Eisenhower in 1944." Previous owner's small bookplate and small light stain on front pastedown, light browning to edges of text block, minor w rinkli ng at top/bott om of sp ine, o ne pag e with tiny edge tear and crease. Dust jacket has wear/wrinkles/tiny chips at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small surface paper loss at top of spine, light browning on spine and flap-fold s, two ed ge tear s with creases - old tap e repai r, one tiny edge tear, light wear on flap-folds. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE., Barr, Luke.
9 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

Cambridge Worth Press 2011 1849310262 / 9781849310260 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Louis Wain.
256 pp, square small 10to (10 1/4" H x 10 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions of Wain's art. "During their heyday, in the time before the First World War, Louis Wain's cats, dressed as humans, portrayed (the) stylish Edwardian world having fun; at restaurants and tea parties, going to the Races and the Seaside, celebrating Christmas and Birthdays, and disporting themselves with exuberant games of tennis, bowls, cricket and football. This is a titillating world of cats at play, uninhibited and slightly dangerous, with most group activities likely to turn into mishap, mayhem and catastrophe. This is Wain's world, funny, edgy and animated; a whole cat world. The first comprehensive exhibition of Wain's work was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London in 1972 and, since then, Louis Wain has steadily become more fashionable and collected worldwide. This new biography will show many images for the first time ever, amongst 300 plates of richness and variety, all of which are reproduced faithfully from the original artwork." 12 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken. MOSQUITO AT WAR.
Ian Allan, London, 1989, reprint.
144 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711004749 "From the outset the Mosquito was a daring concept. That an unarmed bomber, constructed almost wholly of wood and relying on pure speed, could evade the immensely powerful air defences of Nazi Germany by night, let alone by day, was completely against contemporary Air Force thinking and war experience. The result was an aircraft which became the most successful fighter and bomber of World War II. Extreme versatility led to i t s use in a wide range of operational roles - day and night bomber, night fighter, intruder, Pathfinder, shipbuster, bomber support, reconnaissance and a dozen others. Mosquitos served too in practically every theatre of war from Britain to Bur ma . I n this book the author has recaptured the unique appeal of the Mosquito to the fighting airmen of World War II and the high spirits and elan that distinguished Mosquito Squadrons everywhere. First-hand accounts of operations by the men who fl ew th e aircraft are illuminated by a remarkable collection of over 200 photographs. They depict the Mosquito in all its various guises and roles. They show, too, the patient, painstaking and frequently hazardous work of the ground crews who, for th eir pa rt, also shared in the Mosquito spirit." "Universally acknowledged as representing the British national character, the Bulldog can trace its ancestry back to Roman times. Whilst Bulldogs are far from vicious, they can display great courage in protecting their owners, families and property should the need arise. This detailed book traces the origins of the Bulldog a nd c om pa re s t he conformation of the Bulldog in the early years with today's standard. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
16 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

"(T)o most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth. The northern wilderness is barren only to those lacking in perception and imagination. But if we should let the great herds vanish from the barren-lands, they will indeed become what the name implies, and we will have lost a part of the majesty and mystery of life." It retains a close fidelity to known facts ab out the life of one of the finest generals the world has ever known, but it reads like an historical novel....This book recreates the amazing life and times of this military genius, charismatic leader, astute manager of resources, efficien t p u b l i c a dministrator, and great champion of democracy. Most of what we know about Hannibal was written by his enemies over 2,000 years ago. Their writings show a grudging admiration for the brilliant Hannibal, but they are written from t he Ro ma n pe rs pe c ti ve, with the prejudices of his bitter enemies.
