VIETNAM MiG KILLERS: DEADLY DUEL OVER VIETNAM., Dorr, Robert F.

Motorbooks, Osceola, WI, 1988, first edition.
128 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0879382864 "The enemies were numerous. The jungle heat and the broad sea, the North Vietnamese Air Force and their arch ace Colonel Tomb, the MiG-17s and MiG-21s. Points on the Ameri can side were our elite pilots, aircraft and weapons: the Thunderchiefs, Crusaders and, of course, Phantoms. The air battles of the Vietnam War were fierce; the victors earned their wings and the kill markings emblazoned on their planes. (Th i s b o o k) spotlights the duels between America's pilots and the MiGs in the skies over Southeast Asia. Most of all, this is a book about airplanes. Here are the Phantoms Colonel Robin Olds piloted to score four kills. The intrepid Skyhawk whi ch d o wn ed a MiG-17 with an unguided air-to-ground missile. And F-4 number 155880 which finally blew Hanoi's Colonel Tomb out of the sky, earning its pilot ace status. Here are the men and machines that flew Rolling Thunder and Linebacker I a nd II. Mil ita ry expert Robert F. Dorr has collected a superb gallery of glowing color photos - many of the contemporary - and written a detailed history, chock full of anecdotes." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
8 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
9 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

13 Granatstein, J.L. CANADA 1957-1967: THE YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY AND INNOVATION. THE CANADIAN CENTENARY SERIES NO. 19.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771035152 / 9780771035159 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Signed by Author
375 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, political cartoons. Signed by author on title page. "In the tenth decade of Canada's confederation, the expansive and unifying post-war boom gave way to rapid change and conflicting choices. These were the years of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, years when Canada's culture, economy, and politics took new directions and the foundations of today's political and social realities were laid. Beginning with a survey of the country in 1957, poised to grasp Diefenbaker's grand 'Vision', the author vividly describes how the Progressive Conservative promise won the nation - and later could not be fulfilled. In these critical years Canada joined NORAD and scrapped the Avro Arrow jet fighter; the Diefenbaker Cabinet tore itself apart over the nuclear arms question. At the same time, the economic crisis of the early sixties gave the Liberals a much-needed political weapon as the government faced soaring budget deficits, a declining dollar, and a severe recession. Politics mirrored public feelings in the mid-1960s as governments federal and provincial addressed new kinds of problems. Unification of the armed forces, medicare, and bilingualism in the public services, especially in the context of the growing political and cultural ferment in Quebec, proved divisive as well as innovative." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jackat has very small tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, some very light edge wear/wrinkling with one tiny tear archivally taped.

235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." Arms and Armour, London, 1983.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853685843 "(P)rovides a detailed analysis of the new generations of Soviet surface warships - from the Kynda class guided missile carriers of the 1960s to the new nuclear-powered battl ecruiser 'Kirov'. It provides a refreshing, alternative view to the usual over-reactive reading of Soviet naval intentions. Recent Soviet naval developments are viewed here not as an attempt to win control of the sea, but as a persistent drive t o counter western sea-power as a force capable of threatening Soviet territory. --- The major classes of Soviet surface ships covered are Kynda, Kashin, Kresta I, Moskva, Kresta II, Krivak, Kara, Kiev, Kirov and the new destroyers 'Sovremenny' a n d 'U d aloy', each of which has a chapter devoted to it. Complete details of each class are given including design, construction, service career, propulsion, weapons and radar. The strategic thinking behind each new concept is examined, the desi gn s hor tc omings of each type discussed, and their operational capabilities assessed. In addition to over 150 superb b&w photographs, line drawings of each class are provided with details of fittings and armament. There are also over 30 tables of shi p sp eci fications, missiles, guns and aircraft carried by each class. The book is rounded off by Appendices of Soviet ship classification and NATO designations for Soviet equipment." 160 pp, 11" H, soft cover. ISBN 0830630783 B&w and colour photographs, maps. "During the air campaign of Operation Desert Storm, the only thing more incessant than the bombing was the technically inaccurate reporting of the news media. This unfo rtunate dissemination of erroneous information led to misconceptions about what was happening in the most unique chapter in the history of aerial combat. Here, for the first time, is an accurate, close-up, and detailed look at the high-tech war f a r e played out in the skies over Iraq and Kuwait. Using terminology anyone can understand, (the author) explains the concepts and strategies that were used to plan and execute the most successful air campaign in history. Kinzey provides a wea lt h of i nformation, including: How the air campaign was actually planned and carried out; All of the major types of aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army; Aircraft armament, with a detailed look at the missiles and precisio n-g ui ded mu nitions or 'smart bombs' that were used with such effectiveness; The Tomahawk, or TLAM cruise missile; Each of the eight aircraft carriers that participated in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm; The tactics used to find and des troy th e Sc ud m issiles; The air-to-air victories by the coalition aircraft (including a complete list of confirmed kills); Why the Iraqi Air Force 'ran for the border' instead of posing a threat to coalition forces; Why the news media made so ma ny te chni cal m istak es while trying to report on the war effort; The real reason why the B-1 bomber and other combat aircraft were not used in Operation Desert Storm."
