New York Doubleday 2013 0385525753 / 9780385525756 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

247 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In 1921, a 'little band' of disparate activists formed the Communist Party of Canada. Civil authorities across the country reacted with fear, even though R.C.M.P. officers described the party as 'a handful of ineffective English-speaking leaders, a negligible French-speaking element, an isolated Jewish element, with the agitators drawn from the Finnish and Ukrainian immigrants, whose benevolent societies paid for the Party's maintenance'. (This book) documents the ensuing clashes between the Canadian communists and Canada's political and legal establishments, from 1928 to 1932. Dr. Betcherman skillfully recreates the excitement of street fights and court cases, culminating in the spectacular trial of communist Tim Buck. (She) interviewed Communist Party members, Crown attorneys and Defence lawyers of the period, and was granted access to rare transcripts of trials, appeals and correspondence in compiling this, the first detailed and thoroughly entertaining history of these events." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three very small corner bumps. Dust hacket has very light edge wear and wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny scuffs on rear flap-fold.

AFTER THE WAR., Bruce, Jean.

Don Mills, Ontario Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1982 0889025878 / 9780889025875 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w photographs. "The immigrants who came to Canada in the ten years following the Second World War settled in a booming land with many new jobs to fill. The immigrants' reasons for coming here and their experiences in the new society were as varied as their own backgrounds. First were the war brides, some married after only a few weeks of courtship; there were refugees and displaced persons from e astern Europe and Russia; there were British and Dutch farm families, and thousands of others looking for a fresh start far from battle-scarred Europe. Then in the fifties came the Asians and blacks. Jean Bruce, herself an immigrant, tells through hundreds of in-depth intervies across Canada of these people as they fulfilled their dreams, and dispelled fears while establishing new roots. She has ranged the country in selecting photos from churches, ethnic organizations, private albums, the Public Archives, and diverse libraries and museums. In dealing not only with the immigrant experience, but also with changing attitudes towards immigration within Canadian society, (she) has raised issues which will continue to be important and controversial. But most importantly, she has created a portrait of Canada at a vibrant period in its history, a period which was to change the face of the nation forever." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light browning.

7 Bruce, Jean. THE LAST BEST WEST.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." New York Penguin 2006 1594201080 / 9781594201080 First Edition (remainder mark). Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
278 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Signed by author on half title page. "It was the emblematic crime of our moment: On a cold November day in Amsterdam, an angry young Muslim man, Mohammed Bouyeri, the son of Moroccan immigrants, shot and killed the celebrated and controversial Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, great-grandnephew of Vincent and iconic European provocateur, for making a movie with the Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali that 'insulted the prophet Mohammed'. After Bouyeri shot Van Gogh, he calmly stood over the body and cut his throat with a curved machete, as if performing a ritual sacrifice, which in a very real sense he was. The murder horrified quiet, complacent, prosperous Holland, a country that prides itself on being a bastion of tolerance, and sent shock waves across Europe and around the world. Shortly thereafter, Ian Buruma returned to the country of his childhood to investigate the event and its larger meaning. The result is his masterpiece: a book with the intimacy and narrative brilliance for which Buruma is renowned. (His) entire life's work has led him to this story - the tale of what happens when political Islam collides with the secular West, and tolerance finds its limits." Small remainder mark on bottom of text block, light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wear/wrinkling.

184 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "(The authors) describe Manitoba's beginnings as a fur trade empire under the Hudson's Bay Company. They depict the development of the province's resources and potential as a national priority when, in 1870, a very small Province of Manitoba was created to spearhead the development of a western agrarian empire. Working within a changing social and economic climate, entrepreneurs struggled to establish Winnipeg as the West's premier city, and situated that city as the hub of a transportation and distribution network that supported the province's heartland. Ranging forward, the authors' accounting of the province's role in agriculture, industry, hydro, mining, and tourism is given within the context of national and international forces. Roger Newman has prepared histories of selected Manitoba businesses and organizations whose contributions to the development of the Keystone Province should not go unrecorded." 13 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

256 pp, large 8vo (8 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0563369558 B&w photographs. "The British Foreign Office is famous, venerable and misunderstood. While its public face is one of grandeur and formality, its inner workings are shroud ed in mystery. Now, for the first time, the Foreign Office has opened its doors to the BBC; in this book, and the television series which it accompanies, we can find out what life is really like for those who represent the UK abroad or serve m i n i s t ers at home. Among the many issues (the author) considers are what diplomats do and how they do it, why it is a difficult job for a woman, how the Foreign Office compares with the other foreign services, and why Britain seems out on a l im b in E ur op e. She looks at diplomats doing work which ranges from negotiating complicated deals in Brussels to visiting drug traffickers in Bangkok and dealing with death in Delhi. Throughout the book (she) captures the heady excitement that ca n go wit h b ein g a diplomat, but shows too how gruelling can be the demands the life makes on diplomats and their families." William Heinemann/British Book Service (Canada), London/Toronto, (1953), Ist edition.
254 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...the story has as a background the hills and the Rocky Mountains of Alberta; in the foreground are the mining centre of Coaltown and, living in it, a young girl of nearly seventeen - not a fairytale heroine, but a delightful person, natural, impressionable and intensely alive. Her name is Maggy Mileris and she is the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, for Coaltown is a 'little Europe' and contains no less than thirty-five different nationalities working and living there, not to mention the gypsies who come and go, and the pedlar, Eli Kharam. Like most communities, only a little more so, Coaltown is full of snobberies, and Maggy, who had never thought that nationality was important, soon finds that other people think it is..." 381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. B&w illustrations (1 colour), fold-out map. "The period covered by this book is one of the most important in the history of Toronto. It begins in February, 1815, when news of the end of the War of 1812 reached York, and ends on March 6, 1834, when Toronto became the first incorporated city in Ontario. During this time it had changed from a small, undistinguished village, whose main reason for being was that it was the capital of Upper Canada, to a booming city. Immigration increased the population fourteen-fold, and gave to Toronto the strongly British attitudes it was to maintain for more than a century. Individuals acting alone could no longer accomplish what was needed by the burgeoning community, and the citizens of York combined to provide a more or less efficient system for coping with their problems. Towards the end of the period political animus and the outbreak of cholera complicated its smooth functioning, but nevertheless the prototypes of many of Toronto's present institutions were established at this time." Two faint 1" surface paper scratches/scuffs at top corner of pages xlii & xliii. Dust jacket has very rubbing, very light edge wear at top/bottom of flap-folds.

278 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Among the people who have achieved eminence on the contemporary scene, in the arts, in the professions, in public service, in education, an unexpectedly large number (come from) Winnipeg, the North End. This book began as an inquiry into the forces that led to so rich a harvest of talent from one small section of an ordinary city on the edge of the Canadian prairie. In a series of eighteen reminiscences by former North-Enders, it attempts to reconstruct the quality of life in that polyglot community in the years immediately before and after World War II, and from the point of view of one distinctive ethnic group, the children of Jewish immigrants. Jews constituted only a small proportion of the North End's ethnic mix, but as a group they quickly reached a remarkable level of acculturation and achievement, setting the tone and pace for the entire enclave."
