SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES., Brewer, Priscilla J.
6 Brewer, Priscilla J. SHAKER COMMUNITIES, SHAKER LIVES.
Hanover, NH University Press of New England 1986 0874513626 / 9780874513622 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
273 pp, large 8vo (89 1/4" H). B&w photographs, tables. "Athough we know much about Shaker furniture, dance, textiles, and various artifacts, few books tell us about the Shakers as real people and the inner social workings of their sect. Who were the Shakers? What were their social, economic, and religious backgrounds? Why did they join this celibate, communal sect, and why did some leave while others stayed? What did they think of life inside the communities and the rapidly changing world outside? And, perhaps most important, when and why did the sect begin to decline, and how did Believers adjust to this decline? These are some of the questions Priscilla Brewer addresses in this engaging social history. Her highly readable general introduction to the Shakers challenges basic assumptions about the timing and reasons for the group's decline. Brewer studies the Shaker movement from its founding in 1774 to its last major public statement in 1904, restricting her work to the eleven Shaker communities in eastern New York and New England. (She) provides an inside look at Shaker life by recounting the group's social organization, the occupational roles of its members, the composition of its communities, and the operation of the Shaker hierarchy. Far from being a dry, sociological study, this book is filled with anecdotes and revealing stories related by the Shakers through the many writings they left behind." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny foxing mark on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color.

182 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "Stratford Street was certainly a come-down after Pilgrim's Buildings. No wonder Dad had been in two minds about The Shop. Why did they have to move there? (Eight-year-old Jinnie Friend has many alarming experiences as she learns to cope with a new neighbourhood and new neighbours and) clings desperately to her family pride. The Friends are a Cut Above their neighbours. They must be. After all, Dad was a butler once upon a time, the next best thing to being a Toff himself. And they aren't poor. Haven't they savings, and a carpet, and mahogany furniture; not to mention a silver tea-service and silver spoons and a silver button hook? Silver Everything, just about. The pangs and pleasures of childhood are recalled with humour and insight in these two delightful stories set in Tyneside in the 1920's and based on the author's own early experiences." Dust jacket has one tiny tear and one tiny chip - both on the flaps.

9 Fetherling, George. RUNNING AWAY TO SEA: ROUND THE WORLD ON A TRAMP FREIGHTER.
Toronto Dundurn 2009 1550028537 / 9781550028539 First Edition Near Fine
236 pp, 8 1/2" H. "At a turning point in his life, George Fetherling embarked on an adventure to sail round the wrold on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical miles from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Foreign Legionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramped quarters seem to exaggerate. But the routine of loneliness or tranquility is punctuated by moments of near-panic - shipboard fires, furniture-smashing storms, even a brush with pirates in the Straits of Malacca." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

240 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "Mr. Harvey (a professional architect who has been trained and has specialized in conservation) is no theorist and takes the view that contemporary human needs are important and that buildings or groups of buildings must be conserved to accommodate some part of their original function, and must also be regarded in the context of their surroundings. He divides his book into three sections: What to Save and How to Save It (The Town, The Village, The Church and Churchyard), Craftsmanship and Materials, and Continuing Conservation (The Past, the Present and the Future). In these sections building conservation is looked at with an experienced, scholarly but essentially practical view. The book concludes with appendices and notes on sources...enriched with fifty-two photographs, showing conservation at work in the hands of living craftsmen, at Oxford, Winchester and elsewhere, adding much of beauty and value to the text." "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.
