4 Innes, Michael. APPLEBY AND THE OSPREYS.
London Gollancz 1986 0575039167 / 9780575039162 First British Edition Very Good+ Very Good
188 pp, 8vo (8" H). "Clusters (a great English country house) is being troubled by bats - bats in the belfry, bats around the moat, as Lord and Lady Osprey complain to their luncheon guests, who include Sir John Appleby, sometime Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and, though now retired, still keenly interested in any puzzling crime. In the matter of the bats he is unhelpful, but soon he faces the challenge of a murder: the murder of Lord Osprey, stabbed with an oriental dagger, and in the library too. The conventions are properly observed. There's an omniscient butler, Bagot. The moat gleams darkly, guarding its secrets. Inspector Ringwood sets up his 'incident room' in the ballroom, which dazzles with mirrors, chandeliers and trompe l'oeil. The house guests include another title, a QC, and two or three experts on numismatics. And that last point takes us to the heart of the mystery: where, in this vast architectural pile, did Lord Osprey conceal his collection of antique coins? There are clues: the key in the library, the skiff on the moat, the intruder glimpsed through the French doors; even, possibly, the local publican's claim that an Osprey has raped his daughter. Appleby solves the problem with all his usual wit, ingenuity and aplomb. And the bats have the last word: very startling so." Previous owner's name in ink on free front endpaper, book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, soft crease at top of rear flap.

London Windrow & Greene 1992 1872004067 / 9781872004068 Very Good
96 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "New archaeological discoveries, combined with reconstruction of and practical experiments with Roman military equipment are today changing long-held theories about what the Roman soldier actually looked like, how he lived, marched and fought In this book, for the first time, the 500-year story of the evolution of the Roman legionary, his armour and equipment is told not by means of the usual artist's impressions, but in vivid colour photographs of museum-quality reconstructions. Military historian and museum curator Daniel Peterson has been active in the field of 'living history' for many years; he is the organiser of one of the largest and most accurate Roman reconstruction groups, and a member of the world's only authentically reconstructed Roman cavalry unit. He has marched and ridden hundreds of miles across what was once the Roman Empire, reliving the day-to-day experiences of Roman soldiers of nearly 2,000 years ago. He and his comrades are much more than 're-enactors': authentically armoured and equipped, preparing and eating authentic rations, sleeping in authentically reconstructed leather tents, and carrying out rigorous marches, training and battle simulations, they are true 'experimental archaeologists' who are gaining new insights into the greatest army in Western history." Interior - previous owner's small stamp on inside of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - very small bump to top of spine.

6 books (the first six volumes of the 'Legends of Ethshar series) - 6 7/8" H. 1. The Misenchanted Sword - 292 pp, 1985, ISBN 0345318226 - "(The old wizard had) promised the young scout a magic sword to get him safely back to his own lines - and a much enchanted sword Valder would get! The resulting sword gave perfect protection - sometimes! It could kill any man - or even half demon. In fact, once drawn, it had to kill before it could be put down or sheathed." 2. With a Single Spell - 263 pp, 1987, ISBN 0345326164 - "Tobas has been lucky to find a wizard to take him on as apprentice. But now the wizard had died of old age, after teaching Tobas only the elementary spell for starting a fire. And Tobas' efforts to open the Book of Spells used by the wizard had resulted in a fire that consumed the hut and all its contents. Across the sea, in faraway Old Ethshar, there were dragons to be slain, princesses and gold to be won, magic castles and witches who knew the secret of immortality. Tobas gathered his aspirations to his empty stomach and set out to find a rowboat." 3. The Unwilling Warlord - 309 pp, 1989, ISBN 0345354133 - "(Sterren had been kidnapped and dragged) to Semma, smallest of the Small Kingdoms. That didn't seem so bad, at first. They made him a noble, with the title of Hereditary Ninth Warlord of Semma. Then he learned what his duty was. He was supposed to win the war the stupid King had stirred up by his arrogance. Three larger and stronger Kingdoms were getting set to invade Semma. (If) he didn't win the war for them in his position as Ninth Warlord, it would be considered treason - penalty: instant execution." 4. The Blood of a Dragon - 231 pp, 1991, ISBN 0345364104 - "It was definite - Dumery had no magical talent at all. He could never fulfill his dream to become a wizard's apprentice. Hurt, angry, and mortally disappointed, he despaired of ever choosing a trade. But then (he) spied a so-called great wizard humbling himself before a man selling dragon's blood - the precious stuff that made difficult spells work. If Dumery couldn't be a wizard, maybe he could become a dragon-hunter and have all those scornful wizards crawling to him." 5. Taking Flight - 271 pp, 1993, ISBN 034537715X - "(W)hen a fortune-teller prediceted a glorious future (for Kelder), that he'd roam free and unfettered and be a champion of the lost and forlorn, he immediately set out on the fabled Great Highway to Shan in search of adventure. But once he was on the road, life was hardly as exciting as he'd hoped - until he met Irith. She was the most beautiful girl, and the only girl with wings, Kelder had ever seen. They teamed up to see the world, and then Kelder found adventures aplenty: There were bandits and demons, and there were curses lifted, wizards to seek spells from, orphans to champion, and legendary cities to visit. But Kelder began to wonder about his beautiful companion. Irith certainly had seen a lot of the world for one so young - and everyone along the highway seemed to know her." 6. The Spell of the Black Dagger - 312 pp, 1993, ISBN 0345377125 - "Tabaea was an ordinary thief, sneaking and prowling and stealing for a living. Then one night while burgling a hourse, she witnessed a wizard teaching his apprentice a spell - the creation of a magic dagger. Tabaea decided to try the magic for herself. But even though she culd feel the power rising around her as she went through the steps of the ritual, something had clearly gone wrong. The apprentice's dagger had glowed; it had resisted attempts to pick it up; and there had been a blinding flash at the end of the ceremony. But Tabaea's dagger didn't do any of those things. And it wouldn't free her from bonds, or heal her wounds - it didn't seem to be magical at all. It just turned black. Then, by chance, Tabaea discovered that her dagger indeed had its own kind of unusual magic - a dark, powerful magic that promised invincibility to its bearer." Interiors - light browning at page margins and inside edges of covers, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exteriors - very light to light edge wear, two volumes with a faint spine crease, light browning to edges of text block, volumes 1 2 & 3 have a very small faint number stamp on bottom of text block, volume 1 has a small sticker removal mark on front cover.
