NICHOLAS HILLIARD., Auerbach, Erna.
1 Auerbach, Erna. NICHOLAS HILLIARD.
Boston Boston Book & Art Shop 1964 Hard Cover Very Good Good+ Nicholas Hilliard.
352 pp, small 4to (10" H). Over 200 reproductions of Hilliard's work, mainly in b&w. "This is the first full-length monograph to be written on the life and work of Nicholas Hilliard who lived from 1547 to 1619. The first English-born painter to gain the status of an artist recognised by the English court, he was painter, limner, engraver and goldsmith to Queen Elizabeth I and later to James I, and is kown to have also painted portraits in oil, but it is difficult to attribute particular oil portraits to his hand. Hilliard's importance is not limited by his performance as a miniaturist, for the style of his miniatures had a major influence on the general trend of English painting, and dominated the manner of contemporary English portraiture, both life-size and miniature. (He) was equally eminent as a goldsmith and he practised this craft throughout his life. Much new biographical material has been found which establishes Hilliard as a great Elizabethan." Small bump to top corners of boards, minor browning to page edges. Dust jacket is moderately browned - mainly on inside surface, is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly to top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER., Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler.
2 Barba, Eugenio and Savarese, Nicola. Translated by Richard Fowler. A DICTIONARY OF THEATRE ANTHROPOLOGY: THE SECRET ART OF THE PERFORMER.
London Routledge for the Centre of Performance Research 1995 0415053080 / 9780415053082 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good+
272 pp, 11 5/8" H. "(S)ubtly juxtaposes the visual demonstrations of the performer's craft, from a wealth of Oriental and Occidental sources, to uncover knowledge of action in the heightened context of performance - from combat to religion and ritual. Whereas most Western research is concerned with naturalism and psychological realism in acting, the Dictionary focuses on the performer's arduous and eclectic craft. More than just a dictionary, however, it is a handbook for theatre practitioners and a guide for students and scholars of transcultural performance. It is a result of ten years' research conducted by Eugenio Barba and the International School of Theatre Anthropology (ISTA) based in Denmark. ISTA works with practitioners of theatre and dance from the major Oriental and Occidental traditions to study the underlying principles of the performer's technique. The Dictionary aims to expand our knowledge of the possibilities of the scenic body, and of the spectator's response to the dynamics of performance. (It) has practical sections on balance, opposition and montage, among other techniques, and discusses issues including 'The Text and the Stage', 'The Dilated Body', and 'Energetic Language'. The visual essay of photographs, drawings and diagrams which runs parallel to the text is skilfully constructed to complement the textual argument. The result is not only a lavishly illustrated sourcebook on Western and non-Western theatre - much of it until now little known - but an inspiring tribute to the secret art of the performer." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny dint on fore-edge of text block, old stock label on rear cover, minor rubbing.

JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944., Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan.
3 Barris, Ted. Foreword by John Keegan. JUNO: CANADIANS AT D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944.
Toronto Thomas Allen 2004 0887621333 / 9780887621338 Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
311 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "On June 6, 1944, nearly 15,000 Canadians - at sea, in the air, and on the ground - joined the long-anticipated D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe on the Normandy beaches. The piece of ground on which the Canadian fought so hard against heavily armed and entrenched German troops was code-named 'Juno'. On that day, the Canadians fought their way farther inland than any other Allied troops. For Canada, this was an extraordinary moment of bravery, sacrifice, and coming of age in the nation's history. (This book) tells the story of Juno in the voices of the men who were there - young farmers from Manitoba and Saskatchewan, fresh-faced high-school graduates from Ontario, workers from mines and factories in the Maritimes, and eager recruits from Quebec and Newfoundland. In what might be described as 'Canada's longest day', we join the action hour by hour, minute by minute. We take to the skies with the airmen who flew fighters and bombers over the beaches. We ply the Channel with the sailors who swept the waters of German mines and navigated landing craft to the French coastline. We go in with troops who leapt off those craft into waters bristling with booby-trapped obstacles and raked by machine gun fire to establish a foothold on Juno Beach. Ted Barris has interviewed hundreds of veterans to piece together one of Canada's proudest days, and one of the most significant battles of our time." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; place, date and initials on one preliminary page. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of spine.

New York St. Martin's 1996 0312147511 / 9780312147518 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Geoff Hunt cover art.
367 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "(A) story of five months of hair-raising adventure on the Italian front in which young Otto Prohaska, the hero of 'A Sailor of Austria' and 'The Emperor's Coloured Coat', entrusts his life to the nascent, unreliable, and terrifying Imperial and Royal Austro-Hungarian Flying Service. It is the summer of 1916, and Otto, joined by his self-willed aerial chauffeur Sergeant-Pilot Toth, entrusts his life to a succession of flimsy biplanes in the sky above war-torn Alpine battlefields. On the ground, the rickety Habsburg empire has begun its final slide to disaster. And in the air is the unmistakable sense that history, poignant and ironic and always surprising is erupting all around them. Written with craft, style, and an astonishing breadth of emotion, (this) is the continuation of a remarkable series." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, small area of surface paper loss on front panel, small corner crease on front flap.

New York Ace (1 - 7) / TOR (9) Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good Cover Art by Steve Hickman (1-3, 9), Kinuko Craft (4), Denis Beauvais (5) & Ciruelo Cabral (6 & 7).
The first seven books of the Vlad Taltos Series, plus volume nine (8 books in total), 6 7/8" H. **Please note, volume 8 - Dragon - is not included in this grouping.** 1. Jhereg - 239 pp, Ace 1983 16th printing, ISBN 0441385540. "There are many ways for a young man with quick wits and a quick sword to advance in the world. Vlad Taltos chose the route of the assassin. To his other qualifications he added two things: The first was a smattering of witchcraft - badly thought of on Dragaera, but only a fool refuses such a weapon. The second was his constant companion, a young jhereg, its leathery wings and poisonous teeth always at Vlad's command, its alien mind psionically linked with his own. Vlad has never regretted the sorcerous bargain he made with his jhereg's mother: 'I offer your egg long life and fresh, red meat without struggle, and I offer it my friendship. I ask for aid in my endeavors. I ask for its wisdom, and I ask for its friendship'." 2. Yendi - 209 pp, Ace 1984 1st printing, ISBN 0441944566. "Back when I bargained for the wise-mouthed reptilian who sits perched on my shoulder, his mother wished me: 'Long life and good hunting'. I told her I was not a hunter. She said: 'You will be - .' She was right. My name is Vlad Taltos. I am an assassin. And this is the story of my early days in the House of Jhereg, of how I found myself in a Jhereg war, and how I fell in love with the woman who killed me." 3. Teckla - 214 pp, Ace 1987 Ist printing, ISBN 0441799779. "I'd always known they were. Teckla were lazy, stupid, cowardly peasants. Revolting. Old joke. But now they were revolting against the Empire. New joke. And a Jhereg crimelord, feeling the pinch, was popping the rebels. No joke. But the real joke? I was protecting them. Me. Lord Vlad Taltos - loyal grandson, loving husband. Jhereg. Sorcerer. Assassin. Everything the rabble hated. Not that I craved wet-nursing a mob of slogan-slobbering, doomed radical loonies, all of whom wanted me dead. Particularly since my royal peers, all of House Jhereg, also wanted me dead." 4. Taltos - 181 pp, Ace 1988 1st printing, ISBN 0441182003. "Journey to the Land of the Dead. All Expenses Paid! Not my idea of an ideal vacation, but this was work. After all, even an assassin has to earn a living. The trouble is, everyone knows that a living human cannot walk the Paths of the Dead, and return, alive, to the land of men. But being an Eastener is not exactly like being human, by Dragaeran standards anyways. Thus, the rule doesn't apply to me - I hope." 5. Phoenix - 245 pp, Ace 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441662250. "In Gods we trust. All other pay cash. Always a good rule if you're in my line of work, but who'd think a god would take me up on it? There I was, facing certain death, when the Demon Goddess answered my prayers for rescue. Strange she should take an interest in me, considering I'm an assassin. Stranger that the Demon Goddess needs to offer me work. Well, my patron deity wants a favor, and who is Vlad Taltos to say no." 6. Athyra - 243 pp, Ace 1993 1st printing, ISBN 0441033423. "The Magnificent Seven - ? A bit of an overstatement. Minus six, actually. Which leaves one. Me - Vlad Taltos, sorcerer (sometime witch) and (ex-)assassin. Plus my two faithful jhereg. Which makes three, sort of. But even we can have a hard time when we take on the biggest hitters of the House of Jhereg. Here I thought I could retire in peace - ." 7. Orca - 290 pp, Ace 1996 1st printing, ISBN 0441001963. "Granted, walking around with two jhereg on your shoulders is not the best disguise for an ex-assassin wanted all over the Empire. But a young boy saved my life and now he needs my help. And Vlad Taltos always pays his debts. Even if it means uncovering a financial scandal big enough to bring down the House of Orca - and, if I'm lucky, the entire Empire." 9. Issola - 255 pp, TOR 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0812589173. "Okay, so maybe I've been living in the woods too long, where you can't even get a decent cup of klava first thing in the morning. So who should turn up but Lady Teldra, the courtly servant of my old friend the Dragonlord Morrolan? Teldra wants my help, because Morrolan and Aliera have disappeared, and according to Sethra Lavode, it looks like they may be in the hand of the Jenoine. Do I want to mess with them? The guys who made this place? And I thought I had problems before - . Oh, well, what's a little cosmic battle with beings who control time and space?" 11 Clark, Ronald. THE MAN WHO BROKE PURPLE: THE LIFE OF COLONEL WILLIAM F. FRIEDMAN, WHO DECIPHERED THE JAPANESE CODE IN WORLD WAR II.
Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease down front flap at fore-edge, one small edge tear with crease, protected in a mylar sleeve.

The first 4 books in the Night-Threads series - 6 7/8" H - all are first printings. 1. The Calling of the Three - 248 pp, 1990, ISBN 0441580858. "Magic bright and dark swept through the land of Zelharri, claiming the Duke's life in a pool of Hell-Light. Now his son Aletto and daughter Lialla fear for the future of their people. Their murderous uncle has married their mother to steal the throne from Aletto. His only hope to reclaim it is by gathering powerful allies through the magic of the Night-Threads. A magic his sister barely controls. Three ordinary people have been summoned from a place called Earth, in a land known as California: Jennifer, a hard-working junior lawyer who doesn't believe in magic - Robyn, her hard-drinking, hard-living sister - and Robyn's son, Chris, a high school senior with a level head and a smart mouth. These three have been chosen to fight in a dangerous battle of unbelievable magic. A magic they must believe in - or die." 2. The Two in Hiding - 294 pp, 1991, ISBN 0441580866. "Strange and wondrous rumors spread through the kingdom of Rhadaz concerning the young duke Aletto and his sister Lialla, fled from the household of their uncle Jadek, who had ruled the land of Zelharri since the suspicious death of his brother years before. They traveled, it was said, with three outlanders who claimed to be from a place called Earth: a beautiful woman named Jennifer, who had become apprentice to Lialla in the use of the magic of the Night-Threads; the young man known as Chris, who was teaching the weakling Aletto odd but effective ways of fighting. And, it was whispered, the third was an older woman who had the gift of shapeshifting. A talent rare - and dangerous." 3. One Land, One Duke - 324 pp, 1992, ISBN 0441580874. "Whispers of magic and intrigue reached Podhru, grand capital of Rhadaz. It was said that Aletto, rightful duke of Zelharri, sought to reclaim the throne stolen from him. And that the warrior Dahven had escaped the doom prepared for him by his treacherous brothers. For too long has the Emperor stood apart from the conflict, but now the people cry out for 'One Land, One Duke'. The time for hiding is over. At last, the healing power of the Night-Threads stands against demonic Hell-Light while the destiny of all who live hangs in the balance. And three ordinary visitors from Earth must use their newfound talents - as sorceress, shapeshifter, and soldier - to rescue a world that is now even their own. 4. The Craft of Light - 280 pp, 1993, ISBN 0441580882. "Four years have passed, and the three (visitors from Earth) have settled into a comfortable routine. But for Lialla, the outcast duchess of Zelharri, life is a maze of unseen dangers and deadly perils. Her secret powers of Hell-Light are fierce and fearsome; yet they are the very powers that will determine her fate."
