MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST., Laven, Mary.
3 Laven, Mary. MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST.
London Faber and Faber 2011 0571225179 / 9780571225170 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
279 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps, colour plates. "In the sixteenth century, the vast and sophisticated empire of China lay almost entirely unknown to Western travellers. As global trade expanded, this land of reputedly boundless wealth, pale-faced women, and indecipherable tongues begn to feed the fantasies of European merchants and adventurers. The Catholic Church, meanwhile, saw in this great people millions of souls who would be damned unless the Christian message could be brought to them. Mary Laven tells the extraordinary story of the first Jesuit mission to China. Confronting enormous challenges, the Italian priest Matteo Ricci and a handful of learned companions embarked on a journey into the heart of the Empire, the fabled Forbidden City. As they became intimate with a culture that was utterly alien and strangely familiar, they clung to a belief that reason, books and science would be their chief tools in the battle to win Chinese converts. Yet the story told (here) is much more than a war of ideas. The Jesuits waged their campaigns through the senses: the smell of incense, the taste of warm rice-wine, the sound of an out-of-tune harpsichord, the gleam of a Venetian prism. The history of religion has never been so sensuous." Very light wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at top corner of boards, light toning to top of text block, light waviness to for-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, three tiny dents on front hinge.

A CHECKLIST OF TORONTO CABINET AND CHAIR MAKERS, 1800-1865., Mackinnon, Joan.
4 Mackinnon, Joan. A CHECKLIST OF TORONTO CABINET AND CHAIR MAKERS, 1800-1865.
Nationa Museums of Canada, Ottawa, 1975.
199 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H), soft cover. National Museum of Man Mercury Series, History Division Paper No. 11. B&w illustrations. "This check-list, containing approximately 500 names, attempts to include not only all the autonomous cabinet and chairmakers who began their operations in Toronto before 1865, but also all those who were employed by the larger manufacturers and who may have done nothing more than turn out component parts. (It) gives only the barest details for most of the entries: name, occupation (the way in which the man was identified at the time), working dates to 1890, and dates and places of residence and/or business to 1865. Additional information, including biographical data, types of furniture made, number and names of employees, outside activities, etc., is included where available. The working dates given are the earliest and latest dates for which there is actual proof that the cabinetmaker or chairmaker was working in Toronto. This is so even in cases where there may be reason to believe that the craftsman was active prior to or after the dates noted. Where a cabinetmaker is known to have changed his profession, his later occupation is mentioned, but the final date is always for work as a cabinet or chairmaker. In most instances birth dates are correct only to within a year, as they usually had to be calculated by subtracting the man's stated age from the year of the census or tax assessment roll in which it was given." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light foxing to top of textblock, very light rubbing/soiling, light soiling to spine, very minor edge wear. VG

5 Nykor, Lynda Musson & Musson, Patricia D. Foreword by Nancy-Lou Patterson. Photographs by Martha Kuehner. MENNONITE FURNITURE: THE ONTARIO TRADITION IN YORK COUNTY.
James Lorimer, Toronto, 1977.
95 pp, 8 3/8" H, soft cover. B&w photographs. ISBN 0888621493 "Mennonites are among the earliest settlers of nineteenth-century Ontario. A law-abiding, deeply religious and pacifist people, they travelled from Pennsylvania by wagon and foot to s ettle in the Niagara area around Kitchener-Waterloo and in York County north of Toronto. To Canada the Mennonites brought a long rural tradition of architecture, furniture-making and folk art. These ideas inspired the houses and farms the y b u i l t , and the production of a great variety of furniture, in a style rooted in Germany and Pennsyvania and modified with the Ontario experience. Authors Musson and Nykor concentrate on the furniture of the York County area, and draw paral le l s an d co nt ra s ts with the predominant styles in other Ontario communities. Also discussed are the homes, farms and churches of the Mennonite community. These too are distinctive in style while unmistakeably part of the larger nineteenth-c ent ur y Ont ar io tra dit io n." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear and browning, ghost sticker mark and small indentation on front cover, very light rubbing/soiling and small corner crease on rear co ve r, s pin e c olor is fad ed - lettering still very legible. THE WORST JOBS IN HISTORY: TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF MISERABLE EMPLOYMENT., Robinson, Tony and Willcock, David.
7 Robinson, Tony and Willcock, David. THE WORST JOBS IN HISTORY: TWO THOUSAND YEARS OF MISERABLE EMPLOYMENT.
London Boxtree 2004 0752215337 / 9780752215334 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
224 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Tony Robinson has set out to investigate life in the underbelly of history. Whether it's swilling out the crotch of a knight's soiled armour after the Battle of Agincourt, risking his neck on a bleak cliff collecting guillemot eggs or, as 'Groom to the Stool', going to places where none of Henry VIII's six wives would venture - Tony endures it all to get to the bottom (quite literally) of the story. Covering the Roman invasion to the reign of Queen Victoria, Tony uncovers how - behind all the great men and women who have made the headlines - there has been an unseen army undertaking hard, dangerous and unpleasant work. The very names 'Powder Monkey', 'Seeker of the Dead' and 'Spit Boy' underline the fact that the past is a different and fairly disgusting country. The Gunpowder Plot draws Tony to the role of the 'Saltpetre Man' who collected human waste for its nitrate content to turn into gunpowder. In the same vein, he looks at some of the worst jobs behind the building of the great medieval cathedrals and at the dire conditions on Nelson's 'Victory' where the most common form of retirement was being sewn into your hammock with a couple of cannon balls and dropped over the side. Then there's the impact of the Industrial Revolution, a source of wealth and power for the few, but a cornucopia of lousy jobs for the many." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light waviness to fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling and minor rubbing.
