2 Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee. A WARTIME LOG.
Charlottesville, Virginia Howell 1994 0943231906 / 9780943231907 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Authors.
208 pp, 9 3/4" H. Signed on front free endpaper: "Art Beltrone / Lee Beltrone". Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "With watercolors extracted from food can labels and paint brushes made from their own hair, downed World War II American airmen recreated their recollections of combat and experiences as prisoners of war in blank books provided by the Y.M.C.A. With remarkable ingenuity and creativity, prisoners used their Wartime Logs as a mental escape from the physical confinement of German prison camps. Sketches, illustrations, poetry, diary entries - all were recorded in each prisoner's log book. (This book), printed and bound in roughly the size and format of the originals, features artwork and anecdotes from more than a dozen log books kept by U.S. Army Air Force pilots and crewmen held prisoner in German camps during WWII. Adventure, boredom, laughter, horror, and courage fill these pages. (It) provides a unique look into a chapter of history that should never be forgotten and will inspire us all." Minor lean to spine, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling, light rubbing on panels, three very small dents on rear hinge.

THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
4 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

But McGruber is restless - and stirred to dream of something more - of palm trees and surf, of yachts and fast cars, of young women with unlined faces and eager bodies. And then, in a flash, (he) realizes it doesn't have to be a dream. It can all be his - but only if he can pull of the Perfect Crime. This is the beginning of a rollicking, non-stop escapade that introduces the hapless McGruber to a world of deception and devious characters - and an insurance investigator who hires (him) to solve his own crime." 7 Broome, Jack, Captain. SERVICES WRENDERED.
London William Kimber 1974 0718303733 / 9780718303730 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds therein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels indebted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'. In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motor-boats with such enthusiasm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper and on title page, slight colour fading to top edge of boards and bottom edge of spine, minor wrinkles at top of spine. Dust jacket has slight browning at edges, minor edgewear/rubbing.

Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
112 pp, oblong (8 1/2" H x 11" D) soft cover. ISBN 1550022008 B&w photographs, reproductions. "From the early 1890s through the 1920s, Toronto was caught up in a dizzying transportation revolution. As horse gave way to machine, the look of Toron to and the lifestyles of its inhabitants were altered irrevocably. First there was the electric streetcar, then the automobile, and soon all manner of 'working' vehicles. Street railway tracks were laid, service outlets and dealerships sprang u p a cross the city, and the 'auto show' was born, an exciting new feature at the Canadian National Exhibition. (This) is a largely pictorial history of the city as it geared up for the 20th century, featuring vivid photos from the City of Toront o Ar c hi ves, many previously unpublished, as well as newspaper ads from the era. Images of fire engines, garbage trucks, automobiles, early aircraft, harbour tugs, and streetcars bring the reader back to a time when all this meant extraordinary c ha nge . Th e century was on the move and Toronto was moving with it. The photographers showcased in the book (William James, John H. Boyd, Arthur S. Goss, and Frank W. Micklethwaite) were also breaking new ground, turning away from the formality of the st udio to capture the city in transition, thereby establishing a permanent record - one that we can enjoy today." 309 pp, large 8vo (9" H). Signed by author on title page. B&w photographs. "This is a humorous story about an awkward runt - a misfit growing up on a farm on the western prairies during a time when there were few radios and no electricity or plumbing. It tells about a boy in a large poverty-stricken family coming of age and making his way into the workforce. (It) gives the reader vivid insights into farm life during the nineteen thirties and forties. The reader will also experience life in the rugged logging, mining and construction camps. Here you will meet some extraordinary characters the author toiled and drank with - a special breed of men who not only worked hard, but played hard. Underground mining was hazardous, but more of these men were killed at the wheels of their cars, than down the mines. The author also tried sales - first vacuum cleaners door to door and later real estate. During his earlier years he used up nine lives, as well as having other narrow scrapes. At age forty-four he entered graduate school for an MBA despite having only a Grade X education and at age fifty one he launched a rewarding consulting career."
