THE CANAL BUILDERS., Burton, Anthony.
3 Burton, Anthony. THE CANAL BUILDERS.
London Eyre Methuen 1972 413284107 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
230 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(T)he story of the men who, in little more than half a century from 1760, created a network of canals that revolutionised transport and represent-ed the greatest achievement in civil engineering in Britain since the Romans. In those few years between the opening of the Bridgewater Canal in 1761 and the coming of the railways early in the nine-teenth century, tens of thousands of men were involved in canal construction. They came from all classes of society - from aristocratic promoters like the Duke of Bridgewater to Irish peasants who came to dig. This book is the first to deal exclusively with the canal builders and to try to place them in the context of the social, economic, and political world of the eighteenth century, and draws skilfuly on contemporary documents, newspapers, pamphlets, and letters." Burton follows the story through the promoters (like Josiah Wedgwood) and the financiers, to the engineers (including Brindley, Telford, Rennie, Jessop & Smeaton) and the 'navvies' who actually did the digging, "from Cornwall to the Highlands of Scotland". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, a few very light rub lines on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, fading to spine color (title is still dark and legible), two small edge tears archivally taped, minor browning to inside top/bottom edges.

THE RAJ AT TABLE: A CULINARY HISTORY OF THE BRITISH IN INDIA., Burton, David.
4 Burton, David. THE RAJ AT TABLE: A CULINARY HISTORY OF THE BRITISH IN INDIA.
London Faber and Faber 1993 057114389X / 9780571143894 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Very Good -
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "When the British were in India they developed a curious cuisine all of their own. As they made their mark on their host culture, the formidable memsahib - or English housewife - made sure that much traditional cuisine was rejected in favour of an impossible combination of European customs, and the results were frequenlty chaotic. Anglo-Indian cooking was at its best when it achieved a kind of cultural balance; mulligatawny, kedgeree and Worcestershire sauce are all products of the Raj. Drawing on first-hand accounts, David Burton includes over sixty authentic recipes, adapts the best of them for the modern cook, and builds up a fascianting, often hilarious picture of the British - at best, endearingly naive, at worst, ignorant and xenophobic - seen through the kitchen door." Light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight bump at fore-edge of text block - up to approx. page 80, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, front board is slightly bent with a soft crease down the middle, one tiny corner crease. Dust jacket has light wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears/chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several tiny dints on front hinge.

5 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS., Burton, Tim.
6 Burton, Tim. THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
Hyperion Books for Children, New York, 1993, first edition (stated and with complete number line).
Unpaginated, oblong (9 1/4" H x 11 1/4" D) hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1562824112 Illustrated in Tim Burton's characteristicly eerie style. "In all the world, there's no place like Halloweenland and Jack Skellington is Halloween's most important figure. It's Jack who devises Halloween's most macabre tricks and frights, and he's done it year after year with delight. But this year, something isn't quite right: Jack has grown bored with the usual Halloween pranks, and the joy of seeing shock and horror on people's faces has faded. One night, while out for a walk in the woods, Jack stumbles upon something he's never seen before: a strange door carved into a tree. Stepping through the door, Jack stumbles into a world unlike any he's ever known. He finds himself in a bright, cheerful, colorful place called Christmas Town. Immediately captivated by all the Christmas sights - shining tinsel, sparkling lights, gaily wrapped presents, and sweet confections - Jack knows that he must somehow find a way to become part of it all. And Santa Claus himself provides the key as Jack decides to bring Christmas to Halloween - with Jack starring in Santa's role!" Minor rubbing on rear board. 635 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. " 'There is perhaps no figure in the history of medicine in Manitoba whose influence has been greater than that exerted by Dr. Paul H.T. Thorlakson - 'Doctor Thor' as he is affectionately known. There are of course many whose contributions in particular spheres were unsurpassed, but none whose vision was broader; none whose grasp of the import of social developments for medical practice was firmer; none whose ability to transform grand designs into reality was greater. The story of the life and career of Dr. Thor reveals much of the drive, tenacity and dynamism that animated this remarkable man; but for each of us whose life has been touched in some special way by him (this book) will bring to mind many personal recollections of the force of this personality'." MOUNTED POLICE LIFE IN CANADA; A RECORD OF THIRTY-ONE YEARS' SERVICE., Deane, R. Burton, Captain.
8 Deane, R. Burton, Captain. MOUNTED POLICE LIFE IN CANADA; A RECORD OF THIRTY-ONE YEARS' SERVICE.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
312 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Cassell and Company, London, 1916. "When Inspector Burton Deane left for Regina in 1883 to join the staff of the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, he was told in Ottawa that he would find the Mounties an 'armed mob'. He was not disappointed. The ten-year-old force did not have one standing order or regulation, and it was his responsibility to compose regulations for the force, and to establish Mounted Police law. As adjutant to the commissioner and supervisor of the Regina post, he was responsible for establishing all administrative procedure, and he was always at the nerve-centre of every major development on the Prairies in those years. He administered the white man's dealings with the Indians, and in 1885 the captured Riel was put in his custody. His intimate contact with his prisoner makes fascinating reading. But shortly afterward, conflict with the controversial and difficult new commissioner, Lawrence Herchmer, led to his transfer to Lethbridge, where he was Supervisor for 'fourteen happy years'. His ardent persecution of cattle and horse thieves and smugglers led him to arrest a good friend of a Dominion Cabinet minister, winning him a transfer to the remote and tiny outpost of Maple Creek. There he patrolled a large section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, until friendlier forces in government assigned him to command of the post at Calgary." Faint line indentation across spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, knife cut across spine - archivally taped on inside, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.

10 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

Ian Allan, London, 1972, first edition.
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, drawings, tables. "Despite considerable parental disapproval (M.F. Higson) achieved his ambition to become a Fireman. This book gives a detailed account of his experiences stationed at Lancaster, Burton-on-Trent and Crewe, from shed labouring to firing a great variety of engine types, from M.R. 0-4-OTs to 'Duchess' Pacifics. 14 Miller, Muriel BLISS CARMAN: QUEST & REVOLT.
St. John's, Newfoundland Jesperson Press 1985 0920502628 / 9780920502624 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
304 pp., 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "In this colourful and lively biography, we are urged to a new appreciation of the romantic and mythical vision of one of Canada's most important poets. In his lifetime, Bliss Carman enjoyed wide popularity in Canada, the United States and Europe, and the author shows a sensitive and knowledgeable understanding in her approach to the poet's life and work - his early years at home in New Brunswick, education in England and Scotland and his search for attention and recognition in the United States. Miller provides a lucid account of the world as it is seen through the poet's eyes and a rare look at the writing and publishing community as both struggled for survival in Carman's time." 15 Moore, Peter. DAMN HIS BLOOD: BEING A TRUE AND DETAILED HISTORY OF THE MOST BARBAROUS AND INHUMANE MURDER AT ODDINGLEY AND THE QUICK AND AWFUL RETRIBUTION.
London Chatto & Windus 2012 0701186445 / 9780701186449 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
364 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The brutal murder of the Reverend George Parker in the secluded village of Oddingley on Midsummer's Day in 1806 gripped everyone from the Home Secretary in London to newspapermen across the country. It was a strange and stubborn case. The investigation lasted more than two decades, involving multiple inquests, judges and coroners, each more determined than the last to solve Oddingley's most gruesome crime - or crimes, as it turned out. (This) is a fascinating glimpse into English rural life at the beginning of the nineteenth century, so often epitomised by the civilised drawing rooms of Jane Austen or the rural idylls of Constable. England was exhausted and nervous, dogged by Pitt's war taxes, mounting inflation and the lingering threat of a French invasion. Violence was rife, particularly in rural communities where outsiders were regarded with deep suspicion. With a cast of characters straight out of Hardy, 'Damn His Blood' is a nail-biting true story of brutality, greed and ruthlessness which brings an elusive society vividly back to life."

Loudon, Humphrey Repton, Sidney Smirke, Sir John Soane - these are a few of the contemporary designers whom Donald Pilcher quotes in his fascinating enquiry which, on account of its emphasis on town-planning and on the marriage between town and country, has a special relevance to us today. There are chapters on, inter alia, The Man of Taste, on The Landscape Garden, on Taste and Technique, and on Town and Country. The subject is one which lends itself particularly well to illustration, both from the books of the time and from the magnificent villas, crescents, terraces and squares which remain to us as a legacy of the period." "This book is written as a special report to the ruling authorities as a commendation of four people who worked personally for many years with Sir Wilfred T. Grenfell. From all indications, it is thought that, without their unprecedented dedication and voluntary contribution, the International Grenfell Association (AGA) might not have been able to contribute in such a n e f fective way to the area, especially in the medical, social and economic fields. The four people are: Mr. Thomas Boyd (b. 1894), Pastor Stanley Hancock, Sr. (b. 1899), Dr. Baxter T. Gillard (b. 1901) and Amelia Lucy Wilcox Gillard (b. 1909)." 18 Reid, Dennis. A CONCISE HISTORY OF CANADIAN PAINTING. SECOND (EXPANDED) EDITION.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1988 0195406648 / 9780195406641 Second (expanded) Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
418 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "This Second Edition covers painting to 1980. A long final chapter treats a crucial fifteen years when there developed in Canada a tremendous interest in other art forms and an apparent falling off of interest in painting. In fact the cry was hear - throughout the western world - that painting was dead. It turned out, however, that this was far from true. Dennis Reid discusses the work of established artists who produced steadily in the period - including Jack Bush, Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe, Gershon Iskowitz, John Meredith, Guido Molinari, Jack Shadbolt, and Claude Tousignant - as well as new arrivals on the scene who have since joined the ranks of leading Canadian artists. Among the more recent painters discussed are David Bolduc, John Boyle, David Craven, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Yves Gaucher, John Hall, Ron Martin, Michael Morris, Norval Morrisseau, Christopher Pratt, Shirley Wiitasalo, and Tim Zuck. Enriched by this overview, and by many additions to the original text, (this) is the widest-ranging and most authoritiative handbook available. Lucid, interesting, and informative, it is still a pleasure to read from first to last." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small bump on bottom edge of both boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
