1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1996.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557500886 B&w photographs, maps. "(A)fter more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalc anal in 1942 has been set in print. Once of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as wel l a s w i th Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts abo ut fe ar , c ou rage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find wuld never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadro n v e ter ans a nd the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive powers of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legac y of p erso nal ins igh ts i nto one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War. In addition to being a revealing and informative historical bonanza, this work serves as a dramatic, inspirational testament to the men of an outstanding squadron wh o tri ump hed u nder dur ess, and to their legendary squadron commander, Lt. Col. Harold (Joe) Bauer, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor." Dust jacket has light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS., Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.)
4 Chiang Yee. (The Silent Traveller.) CHINA REVISITED, AFTER FORTY-TWO YEARS.
New York W.W. Norton 1977 03930879143 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Chiang Yee.
180 pp, 9 1/2" H. Illustrated throughout with the author's b&w drawings & calligraphy. "In 1933, Chiang Yee, then the governor of a district in China, was forced to leave his homeland after an argument with a warlord. The China he left was an unhealthy country: a weak central government unable to control the power of the warlords; a deteriorating economic condition; a reputation for corruption based on an ill-defined and unsatisfactory land-tax system; widespread illiteracy and famine. In 1975, after an absence of forty-two years, he returned to China. In this book he tells of his travels and records his impressions of the new China as compared to the China he left. In addition, his two grown daughters, who, along with their mother, remained in China, provide another perspective on China's progress. As Mr. Chiang travels through China, he tells of his visits to both well-known and less familiar landmarks; he describes the communes and factories of light industry which have been built in the last twenty-five years. He attends the May First celebration - the important festival of labor. But, above all, he contrasts the backwards country he left with the brand-new independent nation that has been emerging over the last twenty-five years. He points with pride to the accomplishments: 800 million Chinese living and working together in a united spirit; the feeling of peace and prosperity; no unemployment; sufficient food for all; great technical, scientific, and educational advances; increased literacy; universal medicare; and vast improvements in the status of women." Small faint scuff at top of fore-edge of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light waviness on front panel, very light browning - mainly at edges, small light stain at top edge of spine, two line indentations across spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Michael Joseph, (London, 1981).
96 pp, 4to (11 5/16" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color and b&w examples. "Cigarette cards, introduced in the 1870s and immensely popular until the Second World War, provide a richly illustrated history of the period. With real artistic merit they showed heroes of sport and war; stars of stage, screen and radio; classic cars; and many other images. During their golden age, card, albums and novelties were collected avidly, and these fascinating brand advertisements are still items of great interest to many thousands of collectors throughout the world. Many of us will remember the joy of searching in packets for the card to complete the set. This book brings back all the splendours of that time." Interior - clean and tight. Exterior - book slightly cocked and twisted, heavy bump to spine/front hinge causing tear which migrates through the majority of pages in gutter area, several small scuffs on front cover in general area of spine tear, soft creases at rear cover corners. Good reference copy.

Toronto Key Porter 2008 1554700418 / 9781554700417 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (The author) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto-centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

158 pp, 7" H. "Man or monster? What drove this Eighteenth Century nobleman to pen the works that made the name De Sade forever infamous? His life was a sorry record of imprisonment for the terrible deeds he perpetrated. But what of his books? Revolutionist, gaolbird, sentenced to die - reprieved, imprisoned again - and yet, also a Chief Justice finally deposed by the French Revolution because he was 'too humane' - what was he trying to say to the world? Was he, in embracing all Evil, hopefully testing the power and validity of Good? In this brand new biographical analysis of the Marquis De Sade and his works, here is the answer!" 272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry. 'The Unknown Navy' endeavours to throw light on the Merchant Navy's important contribution to the Allied cause during World War II." Dust jacket has a tiny scuff/dent on the front panel.

275 pp, 9 1/4" H. Colour photographs. "(Tamara) Mellon's business savvy, creative eye, and flair for design built Jimmy Choo into a premier name in the competitive fashion industry. Over time, Mellon grew Jimmy Choo into a billion-dollar brand. She became the British prime minister's trade envoy and was honored by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire - yet it's her personal glamour that keeps her an object of global media fascination. 'Vogue' photographed her weddig. 'Vanity Fair' covered her divorce and the criminal trial that followed. 'Harper's Bazaar' toured her London town house and her New York mansion, right down to the closets. In creating the shoes that became a fixture on 'Sex and the City' and red carpets around the world, Mellon relied on her own impeccable sense of what the customer wanted - because she 'was' that customer. What she didn't know at the time was that success would come at a high price - after struggles with an obstinate business partner, a conniving first CEO, a turbulent marriage, and a mother who tried to steal her hard-earned cash. Now Mellon shares the whole larger-than-life story, with shocking details that have never been presented before." "A large part of the appeal of AFVs in general is the enormous scope for presenting a highly individual interpretation of a military vehicle subject. The way the mod eller chooses to pile the necessary guns, ammunition, ropes, chains, tools, radio aerials and so on onto a tank will remain a singular, highly personal contribution to the modelling hobby. In this series of books we attempt to show you how to g e t t he best out of plastic models of AFVs and offer some tips on construction, customising and finishing. We have not specified any particular brand of paint, adhesive or materials simply because models and accessory ranges change their trade na me s, ar e constantly added to - or, occasionally, are withdrawn from the market altogether. Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.
