New York Paddington 1977 0448221861 / 9780448221861 Very Good -
106 pp, + 6 pages of b&w illustrations, 11" H. " 'France, armee, tete d'armee, Josephine - .' These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of St. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile and translated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, from his bitter denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Frenchman, the 'petit caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." Interior - light cigarette odour, slight browning in margins of pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block, browning to edges of covers.

467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." 3 Baigent, Michael and Leigh, Richard. SECRET GERMANY: CLAUS VON STAUFFENBERG AND THE MYSTICAL CRUSADE AGAINST HITLER.
London Penguin 1995 0140247165 / 9780140247169 Very Good+
337 pp, mass market paperback. B&w photographs, map, family tree. "In July 1944 a group of conspirators known as Secret Germany attempted to kill Hitler. The mastermind of the conspiracy was Count Claus von Stauffenberg. Who was this charismatic, dashing aristocrat, who was said to be the only man to stare the Fuhrer down? What were the secret teachings that inspired him to the audacious act of assassination? Forty-six serious but failed attempts on Hitler's life in twenty years reflect a strong anti-Nazi movement in Germany. For Stauffenberg, the bomb plot organized by his esoteric circle was more a moral and spiritual necessity than an act of political expediency. Had he succeeded, he might have become the saviour of the national soul. In this remarkable investigation (the authors) explain how Stauffenberg represents a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In his courage and integrity he stands as an atonement for the barbarism of the Third Reich." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

London Jonathan Cape 1994 0224035258 / 9780224035255 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
337 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "At thirty-seven, Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg, Chief of Staff of the Reich Reserve Army, was a charismatic figure destined for supreme command. The group of conspirators with whom he conceived the plot to kill Hitler in July 1944 was called 'Secret Germany'. That was also the name of the esoteric circle in which Stauffenberg as a young man had been a disciple of the mystic anti-Nazi magus and poet Stefan George. What was it that motivated this extraordinary aristocratic soldier, with the looks of a Hollywood idol, who was said to be only man to stare the Fuhrer down until he averted his eyes? For Stauffenberg the bomb plot was not a political move but a moral and spiritual necessity. After forty-two serious attempts on Hitler's life in the previous twenty years, why did he too fail? Had he succeeded, some say he would have become the de Gaulle of Germany, saviour of the national soul. Even in failure, there can be no doubt of Stauffenberg's heroism. He stands as an atonement for the Third Reich and a resolution of the conflicting myths of German culture. In this remarkable investigation his whole life explains a troubled past to the present generation of Europeans as few have done in recent history." Tiny crease at bottom corner of pages 83 to 100. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dint on rear hinge, very light rubbing .

128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340248238 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Colditz Castle is the Eiger North Wall of World War Two POW camps. It was the ultimate fortress for the bravest and the best, f or the most ingenious, most determined and daredevil spirits who had already effected an exit from lesser establishments of the Third Reich. From Colditz, it was boasted, there could be no escape. The stories of those Allied officers who t o o k u p t he challenge are now well known. But here for the first time a book gathers together a collection of the authentic official German photographs, actually taken on the spot within hours of various foiled escape attempts being discove r ed . S om e ti me s t hey are pictures of the stable door after the horse has fled successfully over the distant border. They were taken between the years 1941 and 1944 by Johannes Lange, a local Colditz town photographer of weddings and christ en ing s, de put ed by th e Thi rd Reich to record what the war's most persistent escapologists were up to....Lange's persistent camera also recorded escape equipment ingeniously devised by the backroom boys, from a compass in a walnut shell to a gl ider wh ich was mer cifu lly sa ved from the ultimate test of the launch pad by the end of the war. The stories are desperate and amazing, funny and tragic by turns, but always exciting. (This book) is also a tribute to the ingenuity and invi ncib ility of the huma n sp irit. Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1968.
251 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w maps. "The attempts by the Western powers to intervene in Russia after the Bolshevik coup d'etat of 1917, and the abortive attempt of the Red Army to destroy Poland, are subjects which have be en badly neglected by historians. John Bradley has consulted French and British archives for the first time, and his book provides a wealth of completely new material on the subject. As a result of this new research many hitherto accepte d i d e a s o f the intervention are challenged and a clearer perspective is given to this period of history. The most obscure phase of the intervention, November 1917 to August 1918, is thoroughly dealt with, and the place of Japan and the Czec ho s lo va k Co rp s i n the military strategy of the Allies is examined. The book also deals with the South, the Far East and the Polish campaigns, the 'last march of the Entente' against Soviet Russia." Minor edge wear to boards. Dreamweaver, Sydney, 1985.
256 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 094982500X Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "This is the story of commercial aviation - of the individual airlines which grew out of humble beginnings into the corpora te giants they are today. It is also the story of people. People such as Paterson, Six, Boeing, Fysh, Trippe, Hanshue, Plesman, Rickenbacker, Hughes, Frye and many other who pioneered commercial aviation and went on to found some of the gr e a t e s t a irlines in the world. The names of Boeing, Douglas, Lockhhed, Fokker, etc., are synonymous with flying today; but what of other pioneers, of companies which have ceased to exist or have gone out of aircraft building? Here the storie s of d eH av il l an d, Handley Page, Convair, Vickers, Stinson, Junkers, Airspeed, Avro, Bristol, Hawker Siddeley, as well as many smaller companies, are told in the context of the airlines that flew their products. With airline operations so con fu sed an d d epr ess ed to day, this book looks back on their illustrious histories - at the efforts of people who made them grow, at the attempts to halt that growth, at the transition from air travel in splendid comfort only for the wealthy to tod ay's 747 s, D C10s and L1 011s which pack in the low-fare-paying passengers like sardines. All in all, (this) is a fascinating chronicle of the world of commercial aviation from its very beginnings until the present." London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1989 0297795481 / 9780297795483 First Edition Very Good Very Good
229 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(A) study of how the British Government manipulated the 'free' and 'independent' British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story of a hitherto neglected aspect of Neville Chamberlain's ill-fated search for a 'rapproachement' with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enlist the newspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. Soon after coming to power in May 1937, Chamberlain learnt that Hitler regarded a 'tame' British press, free of adverse criticism of Germany, as an essential prerequisite to any agreement between Germany and Britain; and for the next three years Chamberlain and his entourage at Downing Street set out to comply with Hitler's wishes - aided and abetted by the press barons. Chamberlain used a system of personal contacts to curb the press, fully documented here for the first time, and he also relied heavily on the 'lobby' system of non-attributable political reporting to completely mislead the British people about the state of European affairs. (This book) throws new light on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain's entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-MI5 officer who ran the Conservative Research Department. At Chamberlain's behest, Ball ran a scurrilous, anti-semitic newspaper called 'Truth' to slander his political opponents and even members of his own Cabinet. The involvement of Lord Beaverbrook, the most famous of the contemporary press proprietors, is also fully revealed for the first time. Using original material from the Public Record Office and private archives, (it) exposes the way in which the peculiarly English customs and habits that governed relations between government and press became institutionalized in the 1930s to the permanent advantage of the government. (It) is thus a study of the system of government manipulation of the press - a system that exists to this day - as well as of Chamberlain and appeasement." Light browning to pages and edges of textblock, light wrinkling at top of spine, very light rubbing on boards. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

797 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802025846 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "From a small militia organization the Canadian air force had grown by 1945 into one of the country's three major autonomous military services. In this second volume of the RCAF's official history, covering the years from 1918 to 1945, W.A.B. Douglas chronicles the force's rapid growth and provides a vivid portrait of the Battle of the At lantic as it was fought from the eastern shores of Canada. Military necessity had brought Canada into the air age. In the peaceful 1920s, civil more than military concerns governed the shape, size, and functions of the RCAF; in the followi n g d e c a d e the rise of international tensions forced the service to concentrate on its military role. During the Second World War the RCAF grew from a few hundred airmen to a force of some eighty squadrons and nearly a quarter of a million pe op le . RC AF s qu adrons, wings, and groups took their place beside other Allied air forces in many theatres of the Second World War, and in the process acquired capabilities in virtually every phase of air warfare. The roots of the RCAF's growi ng rep ut a tio n i n o ver seas theatres, especially in the Northwest Europe campaign, were to be found at home. Responsible for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, the RCAF trained large numbers of other Commonwealth and Allied air men as we ll a s Ca nadi ans. Charged with the air defence of Canada, it built up a big Home War Establishment which fought on the Pacific Coast and also played a significant part in the defeat of enemy attempts to destroy Allied shipping, par ticu larl y i n t he Ba ttle of th e Atl antic. The latter was a crucial role, sustaining Great Britain and the Allied forces in Europe. Directed from headquarters at Halifax, aircraft of Eastern Air Command ranged from the St Lawrence River to mi d-oce an, u ltim atel y thwa rting Germa n U-bo ats that nearly severed the North Atlantic under British Command. Douglas's account is the first to give proper credit to the RCAF for the part it played in these operations. It also incorporates ne w info rmatio n on perso nalitie s, tec hnology , and i ntelligence." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. 291 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "(E)xamines the formulation of British and American policy between 1945 and 1955 towards one of the most hated regimes of this century. The Franco question, though apparently not of the first importance in the evolution of Cold War policy, nevertheless haunted British and American governments during this period. It posed a problem which epitomizes the difficulty of dealing with pariah regimes. As such it highlights for historians the attempts of these two governments to straddle the contradictions inherent in the emerging dual system of the United Nations, or internationalism, on the one hand, and the older system of balance of power, played out by the superpowers as the Cold War. Set as it is in the domestic and international context, it also exemplifies problems faced today by individual governments and by the United Nations in dealing with questions of intervention or non-intervention in distasteful regimes." London Leo Cooper 1986 043618740X / 9780436187407 Very Good+ Very Good
260 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, drawings. "This is the first comprehensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the present day. It is, however, very far from being just a list of what sunk, where, when and why, for the author examines most of the important sinkings in considerable detail, analysing what went wrong and describing the attempts made at rescuing the crew and/or the vessel. In this way he traces the development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late eighteenth century down to the nuclear-powered monsters of today, describing in parallel the developments of underwater rescue operations and survival techniques. The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, updated to June 1985, in the compilation of which the author has had the co-operation of the US, French, Italian, Danish and Japanese Navies, as well as that of the RN Submarine Museum and the German 'U-Boot Archiv'." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has very light edge wrinkling, small area of laminate loss at bottom of front panel.
