3 Adams, Jack. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (THE 24tH REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Hamish Hamilton, London, (1968), first edition.
157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." From the Ashanti comes the moving account of the grief-stricken Kwasi Benefo's journey to the underworld to seek his beloved wives. From Uganda we learn of the legendary Kintu, who won the love of a goddess and created a nation from a handful of isolated clans. The Congo's epic hero Mwindo is the sacred warrior who shows us the path each person must travel to discover his true destiny. Many myths reveal the intimacy of human and animal spirits, and Ford also explores the archetypal forces of the 'orishas' - the West African deities that were carried to the Americas in the Africa diaspora." 18 Green, Howard THE KING'S OWN ROYAL REGIMENT (LANCASTER) (THE 4th REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, (1972), first edition.
143 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520908 B&w illustrations, march. "The Regiment (repelled many offensives) in its early life - particularly at Minorca in 1756, Salamanca, Waterloo, Inkerman, Sebastopol and Spion Kop in the South African War. It was one of the few British regiments to make the desert march across Abyssinia for the attack on Magdala, and also fought in the Zulu War. Wherever the fighting was most deadly and the odds against victory most daunting, it is safe to assume that the King's Own were there. The Regiment boasted twenty battle-honours when the Great War broke out, and in those dreadful four years of slaughter it was to add a further 59 - Le Cateau, Retreat from Mons, Marne 1 9 1 4 , A i s n e 1914, Festubert 1915, Loos, Passchendaele, Macedonia 1915-18, Suvla, Tigris 1916, Baghdad; these are just a few of them. In the Second World War the King's Own waited patiently for the ships at Dunkirk; fought in Syria, North Afr ic a an d I ta ly ; sw eated out the siege of Malta; penetrated hundreds of miles behind the Japanese lines as Chindits. All these actions, and more, are described in this vivid and action-packed story." Previous owner's small stamp on each of fro nt en dpa pe rs , t iny b ump to bottom of spine.
