2 Aubrac, Lucie. Translated by Konrad Bieber with the assistance of Betsy Wing. Introduction by Margaret Collins Weitz. OUTWITTING THE GESTAPO.
University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, 1993, book club edition.
235 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Lucie Aubrac was a young woman of Catholic and peasant background, teaching history in a Lyon's girls' school and newly married to Raymond, a Jewish engineer, when World War II broke out and divided France. Lucie and Raymond, living in the Vichy zone, soon joined the resistance movement that formed in opposition to the Nazis and their collaborators. 'We had the incredible good fortune', writes Lucie Aubrac, 'to l i v e a s ourselves - we did not have to adopt false identities or go into hiding - until the spring of 1943'. (This) is her harrowing account of the months of her most audacious participation in the Resistance: the months when, pregnant with her s ec on d c hi l d, she planned and took part in raids to free captive comrades - including her own husband, under Nazi death sentence - from the prisons of Klaus Barbie, the infamous 'Butcher of Lyon'." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spin e, tin y s pe ck on re ar board. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light wear and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, scattered tiny scuff marks, very light rubbing. Very Good/Good+

Toronto Macmillan Canada 1999 0771575912 / 9780771575914 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good Inscribed By Author
326 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and maps. Inscribed by the author on title page: "All the best - Ted Barris. March '99". "In 1950, nearly 25,000 Canadians signed on for a UN-sponsored 'police action' to stop the Communist incursion into South Korea. They joined a multi-national expeditionary force that quickly found itself embroiled in a full-scale war. Members of the Canadian navy, airforce and infantry fought with distinction and endured months of bloody stalemate that ultimately stopped the Communists but failed to reunite the people of the Korean peninsula - with consequences that continue to haunt the world today. Ted Barris interviewed hundreds of Korean War veterans to gather their stories of heroism and survival, tragedy and absurdity, successes and SNAFUS. He has woven their tales into a fascinating look at a war that many have forgotten." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, tiny dent on rear hinge, minor rubbing.

8 Halliday, Hugh A. (Vernon C. 'Woody' Woodward.) WOODY: A FIGHTER PILOT'S ALBUM.
Toronto CANAV 1987 0969070381 / 9780969070382 1st Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
144 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The late 1930s was a time of restlessness for many young Canadians. For some, nothing short of a trip to England and a visit to the RAF recruiter could satisfy their urge for adventure. One who followed this path was Vernon C. Woodward, a British Columbian from Victoria. (This book traces Woodward's) flying career fromTiger Moths in Scotland, then on to advanced training and out to pre-war Egypt to his first posting. (When war breaks out) the young pilots are flung against a seemingly overwhelming enemy. They do their best, flying their little biplane Gladiators. Woody records his first kill as the pace of combat accelerates daily. Soon Woody's squadron is called to Greece to face even harsher odds with an onslaught of Messerschmitts and Junkers. Woody's tally of kills grows steadily, as does that of many of his mates, but one by one he is losing his friends as the unequal struggle continues. Inevitably the British must withdraw. They make their last stand on Crete, where the situtation is hopeless from the start. Soon there is not a single airworthy Hurricane and Woody and his fellow airmen must take rifle and Tommy gun in hand to fight rugged German parachutists at close quarters. In the end, the British forces made a humilitating retreat to Egypt, where Woody again faces the enemy and records his 20th and final kill, making him one of Canada's leading aces of either world war." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wear to boards, large dog-ear corner crease on page leaf 19/20 and page leaf 99/100. Dust jacket has some light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-foldsm slight wrinkling at top edge.

THE VOLGA RISES IN EUROPE., Malaparte, Curzio. Translated by David Moore.
11 Malaparte, Curzio. Translated by David Moore. THE VOLGA RISES IN EUROPE.
Edinburgh Birlinn 0739419307 / 9780739419304 Book Club Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
281 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "During the summer of 1941, the Italian journalist and novelist Curzio Malaparte was the only front-line war correspondent in the whole of Russia. His account of events there is not unique for this reason alone: his astonishing eye for detail and intimate knowledge of the country lend his record a depth of understanding rarely found in other war reporting, and his attention to the human dimension of the conflict reveals him to be a man of humanity and compassion. In (this book he) provides a peerless illustration of the human dimension of the Eastern Front. His ability to spot details is uncanny; his ability to build upon them to express the horror and absurdity of war is astonishing. Here you get a complete panorama of the front, with views of civilians in their war-ravaged homes; soldiers readying themselves for battle; and graphic descriptions of the most furious combat of WWII. Expelled from the southern war zone on the orders of Goebbels in September 1941, Malaparte spent four months under house arrest before being sent to cover events in Finland. From there he reported the Siege of Leningrad - one of the seminal events played out on the Eastern Front. This dense, all-encompassing, often poetic chronicle leaves you speechless. It's literally one of a kind." Small wrinkle at top of spine, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling.

180 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. Trilingual text (English / German / French). "Since its foundation in 1839, the Geneva factory (of Patek Philippe) has determined the appearance of each type of watch popular at the time, from pocket watches to table clocks and wrist watches. Countless patents have been developed there in order to substantially improve the reliability and precision of their timepieces. At international auctions, their individual models have always been amongst the most highly prized and sought after by collectors. This volume presents an important private collection with timepieces dating from 1923 to 1981. The exclusive focus of attention is on the most interesting chapter in the history of Patek Philippe's development: the so-called complicated wrist watches whose development was made possible by the firm's winding mechanism, patented in 1861. The various models are classified according to type of watch and date of production, and are accompanied by the essential technical data together with lavish use of illustrations." 64 pp, 9 3/4" H. Colour and b&w photographs, maps, drawings. "The border between East and West Germany was closed on May 25, 1953. On August 13, 1961 crude fences and walls were erected around West Berlin: the Berlin Wall had been created. The Wall encircled West Berlin for a distance of 155km, and its barriers and surveillance systems evolved over the years into an advanced obstacle network. The Intra-German Border ran from the Baltic Sea to the Czechoslovak border for 1,381km, and was where NATO forces faced the Warsaw Pact for the 45 years of the Cold War. This book examines the international situation that led to the establishment of the Berlin Wall and the IGB, and discusses how these barrier systems were operated, and finally fell." THE DAY I OWNED THE SKY., Scott, Robert Lee, Jr., Brigadier General, USAF (Retired).
16 Scott, Robert Lee, Jr., Brigadier General, USAF (Retired). THE DAY I OWNED THE SKY.
Bantam, New York, 1988, first edition.
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0553052489 B&w photographs. Author of 'God Is My Co-Pilot". "In a richly generous account of his background and career, (the author) writes of his family's patient forbearance with th eir son's determination to become a flyer - including the hair-raising episode of young Robert's first flight in a human-powered glider in a leap off a neighbor's roof, and his much later, absolutely last-ditch battle to get into the fledglin g U . S . Army Air Corps. Concurrent with the grueling training that followed, Scott set himself to pursue - and won - his beloved lady, Kitty Rix. Once officially accepted by the Air Corps, he seized every opportunity to fly, volunteering for a ll ki nd s of extra duties, including danger-filled airmail runs in the dead of winter. By the time World War II broke out, he had built up an astounding number of flying hours, and, desperate to get into combat, was able to talk himself into the Pa c ifi c b om ber command - although he had never actually flown a bomber....But Scott was first and foremost a fighter pilot - and he proved it from his first day in the combat zone of the Burma-China theater. With Chennault's famed Flying Tig ers he ear ned a r eput a tion as a one-man air force, recording twenty-five kills by the time he was removed from that theater of battle. He writes with utter frankness of his bitter fight with one of Chennault's detractors; much of his subsequen t so jou rn in the Pen tagon w as devoted to extraordinary, and certainly extracurricular, maneuvering designed to get adequate weaponry out to the beleaguered command he had had to leave in Burma. Scott's all-out approach to living is the basis not only of hi s lif elong love aff air with flying but of his characteristic commitment to walk the entire length of the Great Wall of China - an ambition achieved at the age of seventy-two, disguised for a good part of the way as an unlikely si x-foo t-thr ee Geor gia-bo rn Chi nese."
