Raymond de Coccola was a missionary among these people for twelve years. In surroundings that could not have been more different from his native Corsica, he resolved to learn to understand the people by entering fully into their lives. 5 Gibbs, Patrick, Wing Commander. NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.
London Grub Street 1993 0948817682 / 9780948817687 Revised Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Chris Thomas, cover art.
256 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "After a short spell in a light bomber squadron flying Hawker Harts, (Gibbs) was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm, serving on the aircraft carriers 'Furious' and 'Courageous' , mastering the Shark and Swordfish. Another move took Gibbs to Gosport as a flying instructor, before he eventually joined a torpedo squadron. His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron, whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself, struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. (A)lso illustrates Gibbs' increasing dedication to the airborne torpedo as a means for attacking coastal shipping. His articulate account - the vivid impression of a young airman at war - conveys a clear picture of the evolving tactics of Beaufort squadrons as they adapted swiftly to changing circumstances and demands." 9 Johnson, David. V-1, V-2: HITLER'S VENGEANCE ON LONDON.
New York Stein and Day 1982 0812828585 / 9780812828580 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
203 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The full story of the year Hitler's guided missiles fell on London. Only five minutes from launch to impact - not even enough time to sound an air raid alert. They could not be tracked and they traveled too high and too fast to be shot down. - This is no scenario of World War III, but the story of the development of the Nazi's secret weapons and the devastation they wrought that, given a little more time, might have turned the tide of World War II. Seen through the eyes of the Germans who devised and launched these weapons, as well as the people on the receiving end, here is an unprecedented 'you are there' reconstruction of those times when the death throes of the Nazi empire claimed tens of thousands of Allied civilian casualties. (The author) interviewed eyewitnesses on both sides of the Atlantic while researching 'V-1/V-2', and he was given access to previously classified documents and photographs." Light creasing on spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light browning on inside of flaps and spine, two small tears archivally taped - one on edge and one on front hinge, very light rubbing.

10 Moore, Lucy. AMPHIBIOUS THING: THE LIFE OF LORD HERVEY.
London Viking 2000 067087986X / 9780670879861 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Colour plates. "Lord Hervey was one of the most controversial figures of the Georgian age. The consummate courtier - strikingly handsome, elegant and witty - he was both the favourite of the Queen and right-hand man to Walpole. Painted by Hogarth, satirized by Fielding and Pope, and confidant of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Hervey counted among his friends and enemies some of the most brilliant men and women of the age. Yet for all his hard-won fame, there was a scandalous private side to Hervey. He was certainly a rake (rumour had it that he shared a mistress with the Prince of Wales), but such behaviour was quite normal among the eighteenth-century aristocracy. Less usual, however, was his ten-year affair with another man. From the outset, Hervey was fascinated by Stephen Fox. His engaging, delightfully witty letters reveal the depth of their passion for one another, and the lengths to which they were driven in order to escape detection. Finally, theirs became an 'open secret', one of many factors that was to contribute to Hervey's downfall. In this entertaining and wonderfully observed biography, Lucy Moore brings to life an entire age, with its shimmering artifice and its poisonous deceit, its highly wrought melodrama and its grand passions." Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine.

THE DECLINE OF THE CASTLE., Thompson, M.W. (Michael)
11 Thompson, M.W. (Michael) THE DECLINE OF THE CASTLE.
Harveys (Magna), Wigston, 1994, reprint.
211 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1854226088 "Extensively illustrated with photographs, plans and period engravings, (this) book examines the decline of the castle as both fortification and seigneurial residence over th e two and a half centuries that preceded the Civil War. In general, this was a period in which function played less and less part and display - even fantasy - ever more in the minds of castle builders. Although few new castles were built in E n g l a n d after 1400, the growing power of artillery and continuing warfare in Scotland and across the Channel in France continued to provide stimuli to fresh architectural development. Dr. Thompson relates alterations in design to contemporar y s oc ia l ch an ges and devotes particular attention to the rapid decline of Tudor times and to the massive destruction wrought by Parliamentary forces during the Civil War and Commonwealth. A concluding chapter examines the enticing quality the i mag e o f t he ca stl e has continued to hold over the intervening three centuries and examines some remarkable latterday examples of the genre, among them Burges' Castell Coch in Glamorgan and, in this century, Lutyens' Castle Drogo." Dust jac ket has min or r ubb ing, ver y minor edge wear. Fine/Near Fine
