ABSENT LORD: ASCETICS AND KINGS IN A JAIN RITUAL CULTURE., Babb, Lawrence A.
1 Babb, Lawrence A. ABSENT LORD: ASCETICS AND KINGS IN A JAIN RITUAL CULTURE.
University of California Press, Berkeley, 1996.
244 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0520203240 "What does it mean to worship beings that one believes are completely indifferent to, and entirely beyond the reach of, any form of worship whatsoever? What are the implications of such a relationsh ip with sacred beings for the religious life of a community? Using these questions as his point of departure, Babb explores the ritual culture of image-worshiping Svetambar Jains. Jainism is, aside from Buddhism, the only surviving exampl e o f I n d i a's ancient non-Vedic religious traditions. It is known and celebrated for its systematic practice of non-violence and for the rigor of the asceticism it promotes. 'Absent Lords' sheds light on a little-known religious tradition an d d em on s tr at es t hat divine 'absence' can be as rich as divine 'presence' in its possibilities for informing a religious response to the cosmos." 2 Barber, Malcolm. THE TRIAL OF THE TEMPLARS.
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1998, reprint.
312 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521457270 "On 18 March 1314, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned at the stake. For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . St James' Cathedral / Toronto University Press, Toronto, 1998.
326 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0802047149 B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings, plans, elevations. "St James' Cathedral can justly be called the Mother Church of the city of Toronto as well as of the Anglican diocese centred there. Its congregation perpetuates one that began worshipping in Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe's tent at the very founding of the town of York in 1793. Its grounds were set aside for a place of worship in 1797, and the wooden church tha t o p ened there ten years later was the first to be built in the town. Four successive Anglican churches have stood on this site, which is now in the heart of downtown Toronto. This history, commissioned as part of St James' 200th-anniversary ce le b ra ti ons in 1996-7, represents a collaboration by seven respected amateur and professional historians. It is lavishly illustrated with over one hundred pictures from the cathedral's own archives and the holdings of other institutions, as well as e igh t p ages of specially commissioned colour plates. Alongside a general history of the church as both parish and cathedral and its ministry to the community through two centuries, there are chapters specially treating the architecture of t he s ucc essi ve b uildings and the development of St James' renowned music and liturgy. This book will appeal not only to students of religious, cultural, and architectural history but to all who take an interest in Toronto's heritage, and Canada' s." Chosen for their excellence in design and stitchery, these works represent the achievements of artists who have created art, in fabric, for places of worship. This book celebrates this important artistic expression, a significant part of our heritage. Pieces are selected from communities across Canada: from a small parish on a Micmac reserve in Nova Scotia to a large urban synagogue in Vancouver; from the igloo-shaped chathedral in Iqaluit to a suburban church nestled beside a wildlife marsh in southwestern Ontario." ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES., Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young.
5 Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young. ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES.
Longmans, Green, London, 1968, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans, 2 portraits. "The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13) holds a special place in the annals of several European armies. The protracted struggle produced a number of great cap tains - John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, Prince Eugene of Savoy and the French Marshal Villars - and their respective martial achievements still exert a strong fascination. Two of their contemporaries who throw a considerable amoun t o f l i ght on the day-to-day conduct of Marlborough's most important campaigns, with their roll-call of famous successes - Blenheim, Raimillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the lines of Ne Plus Ultra - are Capt. Robert Parker of the Royal Regiment o f F oo t o f Ir eland (whose 'Memoirs', though often briefly quoted, have not been republished since they first appeared some time after his death); and the Comte de Merode-Westerloo whose 'Memoires' are hardly known outside Belgium. In almost ever y re spe ct t he y p resent striking contrasts, in birth, rank and character, and their differences are reflected in their writing. Parker, an Irishman of obscure origins, reached the relatively humble rank of Captain of Grenadiers. His whole mil it ary lif e w as int imat ely bound up with his regimental family. His feelings for Marlborough at times amount to uncritical hero-worship. From first to last he reveals himself as a highly competent professional soldier of modest and unpretenti ous cha racte r. The Com te de Merode-Westerloo, a great magnate in Flanders with a redoubtable ancestry behind him, eventually became a Field-Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire - not that he had begun the war in the Emperor's service, but in that of h is en emies. B rave to t he poi nt of folly, irascible, touchy, overbearingly arrogant, he was continually in trouble. He bore lasting grudges against the men who, he thought, had conspired to ruin his career - Marlborough and Prince Eugene . As a com mander it i s dou btful whether he possessed sufficient cool judgment to merit his appointment to posts of the highest responsiblity. Expertly edited and annotated, the relevant passages from these two memoirs provide a narrative of t his gr eat war of ext raord inary immedi acy and fascination. It will also be invaluable to students of the period." Small soiling mark on bottom of text block, light wrinkling and tiny tear at bottom of spine. 6 Chryssides, George. THE ELEMENTS OF UNITARIANISM.
Boston, Massachusetts Element 1998 1862042470 / 9781862042476 Very Good -
134 pp, small 8vo (7 13/16" H). "The Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century opened a wide-ranging debate on the nature of authority within the Christian Church, giving birth to a vigorous radical dissent movement and the emergence of Unitarianism in the United States and Europe. Based on the belief that the only true source of authority is human reason itself, this is a religous community where doubts are encouraged and tenets are refreshingly free from dogma. The guiding principles are simply freedom, reason and tolerance, and the right to question religious doctrine is a valued part of Unitarian practice. (This book) explains: what Unitarians believe; how Unitarianism differs from mainstream Christian denominations; the role of Unitarians in international religious dialogue; what Unitarianism can offer us today." THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
8 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Toronto Key Porter 2008 1554700418 / 9781554700417 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (The author) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto-centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

9 Evans, Hilary and Evans, Mary. THE LIFE AND ART OF GEORGE CRUIKSHANK 1792-1878.
New York S.G. Phillips 1978 0875992277 / 9780875992273 Very Good Good George Cruikshank
192 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions. "When George Cruikshank died, (over) a hundred years ago, he was admired as an artist, respected as a reformer, loved as a man. But he had lived so long and created so much that few could discern any unity underlying the diverse creations of his seventy-year working life - creations ranging from a thumbnail caricature of Napoleon III ('it never reigns but it bores!') to the four-metres-wide 'Worship of Bacchus' which now hangs, dusty and neglected, in the storerooms of the Tate Gallery. For some he was the artist who showed us Oliver Twist asking for mroe; for some the whimsical delineator of elves and fairies; for others the fanatical reformer who drew 'The Bottle' to convert us all from the Demon Drink. Everything he created was a spontaneous response to the world he saw. It might be something trivial, as when he went on a day-trip to Boulogne - the only time he left English soil! - and memorialized the event in a masterly sketch of seasick travellers (which perhaps explains why the adventure was never repeated). Or it might be on a deeper level, as when he symbolises in 'The Drunkard's Children' all the horrors of modern industrial society. It is his ability to see the world both as it is and as it might be which is the greatness of Cruikshank, both as a man and as an artist, and this book sets out to reveal the continual development of his art as a reflection of his continual development as a man. It therefore takes the form of a running commentary on pictures which are themselves a running commentary on the artist's outward and inward life. From more than two hundred pictures, one of the widest selections of his work ever brought together, Cruickshank emerges, not just as one of the world's greatest illustrators, but as a visionary artist whose work, at first glance so light and casual, reveals a profound sympathy and understanding of human life." Minor bump at top bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, some light rubbing on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear, moderate edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, light fading to spine and flap-fold color, 2" puckered triangular closed tear and small puncture with associated rub line on rear panel, 1" tear at bottom of front flap fold, minor rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

They valued his skills in war, but they feared the violence in his heart. Seventeen years after his birth, self-exile takes Bane to a rats' nest: the Great City of Stone. Here, where gladiators kill for a living, the Crimson Priests have created a reign of terror by breeding enough malice and hatred to last a hundred lifetimes. Yet here, too, the beleagured Tree Cultists, led by the mysterious Veiled Lady, endeavour to practise their philosophy of love. By now seeking the ultimate vengeance, Bane the Bastard prepares to join battle to destroy the Myth of Stone. The days of blood are drawing near, and this son of an undefeated warrior king - Connovar, the fabled Demonblane - must fight to save his world." 3. Ravenheart - 507 pp, 2002, ISBN 0552146757. In a perilous land, her hopes are pinned on two men: Jaim Grymauch, the giant Rigante fighter, a man haunted by his failure to save the friend he loved from betrayal, and Kaelin Ring, a youth whose deadly talents will earn his the enmity of all Varlish. "A vital, rich tradition for over eight centuries, Japanese portrait sculpture is an art that has been unjustly ignor ed by the West. This book, the first in a Western language devoted solely to the subject, constitutes a major step in the transition from indifference to appreciation....(it) illuminates the principal characteristics and eccentricities of t h i s a r t , concisely delineating its social setting and historical and stylistic development. An intelligent discussion of individual works completes the picture, allowing the reader to evaluate, for the first time, the range and depth of th is l on g- n eg le ct ed art. Many of the obscurities of Japanese portrait sculpture are derived from its birth and development within the traditions of Buddhist sculpture. The use of statues as objects of worship, the depositing within them of com mem ora tiv e and vo tiv e o bjects, and their placement in 'portrait halls' - all these aspects of the Buddhist background are clarified in this book, giving the reader a full, insightful understanding of Japanese portrait sculpture....Lay scu lptu re d iver ged fr om t he m ains trea m of Buddhist sculpture in the thirteenth century, and though it is more easily understood than Buddhist portraiture, this books' knowlegeable description of its origins and development will greatly facilita te it s app recia tion ." 15 Johari, Harish. TOOLS FOR TANTRA.
Destiny, Rochester, Vermont, (1986).
136 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover. B&w drawings, color plates. "Harish Johari, accomplished artist, sculptor, Tantric practitioner and scholar, travelled throughout India in search of ancient examples of the primordial yantras. In 'Tools for Tantra' he has re-created their exact colors and proportions along with step-by-step instructions for the accurate construction, coloring, and use of yantras. Traditional Hindu practices associated with yantras are also fully elaborated; among these are meditation and visualization techniques, as well as methods of attuning with bodily, seasonal, and astrological cycles. A physiological understanding of these disciplines and their effects on the central nervous system is discussed in detail, reaffirming the link between the Eastern Tantric explanation of phenomena and the evidence presented by Western scientific research. Johari also includes a full description of authentic Tantric ritual as a tool for attuning with the world of symbol and nature. The combined powers of ritual, yantras, and the other practices delineated by the author enable us to go beyond the normal framework of consciousness to an altered state in which the experience of Tantra can be realized." 17 Oliver, Jane. NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.
London Collins 1939 Very Good - Good
541 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). Map endpapers. Historical fiction. "Everyone knows of the sufferings of the Covenanters, but fewer of their intolerance in power, their grudging reception of the young King Charles after his father's execution at Whitehall, and the galling discipline which made him, after his accession to the English throne, unwilling ever to visit Scotland or to tolerate Presbyterianism again. Against this background, Miss Oliver tells the story of three generations of a great Scottish family, the Humes of Polwarth, rising to play their part in the nation's affairs. Lady Polwarth, resolute Episcopalian, was broken by her disastrous passion for her young second husband, Lord Jedburgh. Her son Sir Patrick Hume defied her to become a Covenanter, but was happier in his lifelong love for his brave, plain wife, who followed him into exile, and came back in triumph with Dutch William after his not quite bloodless revolution. Violent, too, was the career of his famous daughter, Grisel, whose romantic marriage to George Baillie, son of the Covenanting martyr, brings to a sunlit close her family's part in a century's struggle for freedom of speech and thought and worship." Dust soiling to top of textblock, light wrinkling at top and bottom of spine, slight waviness to cloth on boards. Dust jacket has small tears and chips, browning to spine and some edges, light rubbing, moderate edge wrinkling, now in a removable mylar sleeve.

288 pp, 8vo (9" H). "This volume explores the growing shift from efforts toward unity within Christianity to broader, more far-reaching attempts at unity among all world religions (the 'wider ecumenism'). Editor Peter Phan traces this trend back to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65) but notes that, in the last ten years or so, the movement has become pronounced. (The book) consists of eighteen papers deriving from a recent ecumenical conference in Istanbul, Turkey. The authors seek to add their contributions to contemporary interfaith dialogue." ISBN 0802067689 "With an amazing knowledge of his subject (and also of related matters, e.g. mythology and Jungian psychology) the author here discusses witchcraft and diabolism in a way that arouses admiration for his exact and critical aptitude. The central theme is the historical origins (and, as a sidetrack, the psychological functions) of some forms of witchcraft. The question whether these should be regarded as survivals of the ancient pagan cults, or whether they should be supposed to be linked to Christedom as heresy, is given extensive treatment." International Review of Social History. Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, two tiny co rner creases - one migrates into last few pages.
