Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Here then is a tranquil book designed for casual reading, calling up the very sights, sounds and smells of th e E ng lis h cou ntr ysi de . New York Ace (1 - 7) / TOR (9) Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good Cover Art by Steve Hickman (1-3, 9), Kinuko Craft (4), Denis Beauvais (5) & Ciruelo Cabral (6 & 7).
The first seven books of the Vlad Taltos Series, plus volume nine (8 books in total), 6 7/8" H. **Please note, volume 8 - Dragon - is not included in this grouping.** 1. Jhereg - 239 pp, Ace 1983 16th printing, ISBN 0441385540. "There are many ways for a young man with quick wits and a quick sword to advance in the world. Vlad Taltos chose the route of the assassin. To his other qualifications he added two things: The first was a smattering of witchcraft - badly thought of on Dragaera, but only a fool refuses such a weapon. The second was his constant companion, a young jhereg, its leathery wings and poisonous teeth always at Vlad's command, its alien mind psionically linked with his own. Vlad has never regretted the sorcerous bargain he made with his jhereg's mother: 'I offer your egg long life and fresh, red meat without struggle, and I offer it my friendship. I ask for aid in my endeavors. I ask for its wisdom, and I ask for its friendship'." 2. Yendi - 209 pp, Ace 1984 1st printing, ISBN 0441944566. "Back when I bargained for the wise-mouthed reptilian who sits perched on my shoulder, his mother wished me: 'Long life and good hunting'. I told her I was not a hunter. She said: 'You will be - .' She was right. My name is Vlad Taltos. I am an assassin. And this is the story of my early days in the House of Jhereg, of how I found myself in a Jhereg war, and how I fell in love with the woman who killed me." 3. Teckla - 214 pp, Ace 1987 Ist printing, ISBN 0441799779. "I'd always known they were. Teckla were lazy, stupid, cowardly peasants. Revolting. Old joke. But now they were revolting against the Empire. New joke. And a Jhereg crimelord, feeling the pinch, was popping the rebels. No joke. But the real joke? I was protecting them. Me. Lord Vlad Taltos - loyal grandson, loving husband. Jhereg. Sorcerer. Assassin. Everything the rabble hated. Not that I craved wet-nursing a mob of slogan-slobbering, doomed radical loonies, all of whom wanted me dead. Particularly since my royal peers, all of House Jhereg, also wanted me dead." 4. Taltos - 181 pp, Ace 1988 1st printing, ISBN 0441182003. "Journey to the Land of the Dead. All Expenses Paid! Not my idea of an ideal vacation, but this was work. After all, even an assassin has to earn a living. The trouble is, everyone knows that a living human cannot walk the Paths of the Dead, and return, alive, to the land of men. But being an Eastener is not exactly like being human, by Dragaeran standards anyways. Thus, the rule doesn't apply to me - I hope." 5. Phoenix - 245 pp, Ace 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441662250. "In Gods we trust. All other pay cash. Always a good rule if you're in my line of work, but who'd think a god would take me up on it? There I was, facing certain death, when the Demon Goddess answered my prayers for rescue. Strange she should take an interest in me, considering I'm an assassin. Stranger that the Demon Goddess needs to offer me work. Well, my patron deity wants a favor, and who is Vlad Taltos to say no." 6. Athyra - 243 pp, Ace 1993 1st printing, ISBN 0441033423. "The Magnificent Seven - ? A bit of an overstatement. Minus six, actually. Which leaves one. Me - Vlad Taltos, sorcerer (sometime witch) and (ex-)assassin. Plus my two faithful jhereg. Which makes three, sort of. But even we can have a hard time when we take on the biggest hitters of the House of Jhereg. Here I thought I could retire in peace - ." 7. Orca - 290 pp, Ace 1996 1st printing, ISBN 0441001963. "Granted, walking around with two jhereg on your shoulders is not the best disguise for an ex-assassin wanted all over the Empire. But a young boy saved my life and now he needs my help. And Vlad Taltos always pays his debts. Even if it means uncovering a financial scandal big enough to bring down the House of Orca - and, if I'm lucky, the entire Empire." 9. Issola - 255 pp, TOR 2002 1st printing, ISBN 0812589173. "Okay, so maybe I've been living in the woods too long, where you can't even get a decent cup of klava first thing in the morning. So who should turn up but Lady Teldra, the courtly servant of my old friend the Dragonlord Morrolan? Teldra wants my help, because Morrolan and Aliera have disappeared, and according to Sethra Lavode, it looks like they may be in the hand of the Jenoine. Do I want to mess with them? The guys who made this place? And I thought I had problems before - . Oh, well, what's a little cosmic battle with beings who control time and space?" Interiors - two books with light to mderate browning on insideof covers, light toning to light browning to most pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exteriors - all books have very light edge wear; one book has light edge wear, two small scratches inked out on spine and a small area of color loss on front cover due to old sticker removal; six books have faint to light minimal creases on spine, three books have a slight lean to spine, one book has a corner crease and hinge crease on front cover, two books have a tiny number stamp on bottom of text block, one book has light browning to edges of text block.

"In all the world, there's no place like Halloweenland and Jack Skellington is Halloween's most important figure. It's Jack who devises Halloween's most macabre tricks and frights, and he's done it year after year with delight. But this year, something isn't quite right: Jack has grown bored with the usual Halloween pranks, and the joy of seeing shock and horror on people's faces has faded. One night, while out for a walk in the woods, Jack stumbles upon something he's never seen before: a strange door carved into a tree. Stepping through the door, Jack stumbles into a world unlike any he's ever known. He finds himself in a bright, cheerful, colorful place called Christmas Town. Immediately captivated by all the Christmas sights - shining tinsel, sparkling lights, gaily wrapped presents, and sweet confections - Jack knows that he must somehow find a way to become part of it all. And Santa Claus himself provides the key as Jack decides to bring Christmas to Halloween - with Jack starring in Santa's role!" Minor rubbing on rear board. London Heinemann 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good John Ward R.A.
185 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "There is a tangled web of personal relationships between Tom the woodman's son, Billy Lander the son of the squire and boorish Harold Sims who causes trouble between them. Tom makes friends with a girl in a snowstorm, only to find she is Harold's sister. A crisis is reached when Tom and Harold confront one another during Christmas festivities at the Hall. But while these human problems trouble Tom he has another absorbing interest: the doe in the woods who comes and goes unpredictably with her mate and later with her fawn. It is a threat to the fawn which brings the latent hostility between the boys to a climax. The life of the seasons, in forest and by the seashore, plays a vivid part in this drama of suspense and final triumph of character." Small crease at bottom corner of half-title page, small scuff at top of rear board with very light trailing rub mark down board. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, one very small tear and several tiny chips.

LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES., Colville, Robert.
19 Colville, Robert. LONDON: THE NORTHERN REACHES. THE COUNTY BOOK SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1951, first edition.
268 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, fold-out map at rear. "The area which is the subject of this book is one of great variety and contrast. From Highgate Woods and Hampstead Heath the land slopes away to busy and conge sted Camden Town; in Somers Town vast building schemes are carried out beside quiet old squares; historic houses stand near to new and prosperous residential quarters. There is an astonishing variety of institutions, from the Zoo and Holl o w a y a n d P entonville prisons to University colleges and other places of learning and research, from the Caledonian Market to the ancient foundation of Queen Matilda. Over the whole scene hangs the atmosphere both of accomplished and pending c ha ng e. T he g r ea t railway companies, four of whose termini profoundly affect the life of parts of the area, are nationalised; the well-run private house, once the hall mark of the Northern Heights, is giving way to blocks of flats. Mr Co lvi lle de scr i bes th is ch ang ing scene and its implications in an objective and impartial manner. Although the time is the present, the past is used to explain developments and tendancies, and a clear picture of an area in transition appears ." Ligh t br owni ng to endp ape rs, sli ght bowing to rear board, corner crease and tiny hinge tear (archivally taped) on folding map, very light edge wear, small wrinkle across lower spine, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor foxing ma rks on t op of text blo ck. Dust jac ket has m oderate edge wear/wrinkling along with small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing on rear panel. Very Good/Good+

190 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H). Ex-library copy. Profusely illustrated in b&w. "(A) record of the works of Thoreau MacDonald as a designer and illustrator. The basis of the catalogue is a collection built up by Margaret E. Edison since the early thirites, when TM began to be a leader in Canadian book designing: it is the first bibliographic catalogue of the work of a Canadian artist. Thoreau MacDonald, born near Toronto in 1901, is the only son of J.E.H. MacDonald, a member of the Group of Seven. His childhood was spent in the woods and fields near High Park and his chapter of recollections, written especially for this book, tells of his delight in nature. For the past sixty years, he has lived in Thornhill, and his love and respect for the rural way of life is referred to by Barker Fairley in an introductory letter, also written for this book. An evaluation of his work by E.R. Hunter, art critic and author of a book on Thoreau MacDonald, is contained in the text."
