1 Bishop, Billy. (William.) Introduction by Stanley M. Ulanoff. WINGED WARFARE. THE ILLUSTRATED CLASSIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF CANADIAN WORLD WAR I ACE BILLY BISHOP.
McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Toronto, 1990, reprint.
281 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 0075510243 B&w illustrations. "Billy Bishop enlisted as an infantryman at the outbreak of World War I. He soon transferred to the Royal Flying Corps where flying came as naturally to him as breathing. In this classic autobiography, Billy Bishop vividly recreates the early days when the 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the tiny Nieuport Scout, armed with a single Lewis gun, in which he had to dodge the 'Archies' (ant i - a i r c r aft batteries) and fight the scarlet tri-winged Fokkers flown by the formidable Baron von Richthofen and his squadrons." Bishop was credited with 72 victories and was the recipient of every British decoration, including the Victoria C ro ss . I nt er io r - book slightly cracked at two places, tiny corner crease on last page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - small soft creases to corners and fore-edges of covers, slight curl at fore-edge of fr ont co ve r, two li ght creases on spine, minor soiling and rubbing. Very Good-

New York Arkana / Penguin 1992 0140194495 / 9780140194494 Soft Cover Very Good+ Woodcuts by the Author.
467 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "A legendary work of religious scholarship and art history, available in English for the first time. This extraordinary - and extraordinarily beautiful - volume introduces readers to a compendium of animal symbolism that ranks with the greatest of classical and medieval bestiaries. (It) was the life's work of the French Catholic scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lessay, who combed the religious traditions of ancient Egypt, classical Greece and Rome, early and medieval Christianity, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, and alchemy to research it. First published in France at the outbreak of World War II and nearly destroyed in the war's devastations, this masterpiece of scholarship has been translated and abridged (from its original thousand-page length) by D.M. Dooling, the founder and editorial director of 'Parabola: The Magazine of Myth and Tradition', and includes 400 woodcuts by the author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - remainder mark on top of text block.

177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." 246 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs. "Both Chadwick and the author lived through the same contemporary events, so this biography of the great Avro designer not only deals with aircraft evolution but reflects the atmosphere of those days. They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. In a swift moving story Penrose depicts Chadwick's career through the changing years from the early revelation of flight to his 54th year when he initiated design of the futuristic Delta-Winged Vulcan, ending with his tragic death in the crash of the Avro Tudor II airliner in 1947." London Hutchinson 1975 0091247403 / 9780091247409 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Chris Mayger, cover art.
286 pp, 8 3/4" H. Military fiction. "During the Second World War, the losses of ships and men in Allied convoys rose to such proportions that sinkings often far outpaced replacements. As the toll of ships mounted, the escort carrier was born. She had the hull of an uncompleted merchant ship, but had a flight deck and upperworks of a conventional carrier. These makeshift vessels, single-screwed and with only wooden flight-decks to protect them from dive-bombers, performed miracles in every theatre of war. This is the story of one of them, HMS Growler, seen through the eyes of Tim Rowan, a naval pilot - a story which takes Growler through the long drawn out misery of Russian convoys to the terrifying onslaught of Japanese Kamikaze in the Indian Ocean."
