NINETEENTH CENTURY ARCHITECTURE IN BRITAIN., Turnor, Reginald.
6 Turnor, Reginald. NINETEENTH CENTURY ARCHITECTURE IN BRITAIN.
London B.T. Batsford 1950 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good- A.F. Kersting, photography.
118 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(S)urveys the chequered course of British architecture from Regency times to the beginning of the (20th) century. During these hundred years the building arts descended from the order and decency of traditional Georgian design to a tastelessness and anarchy which reached its lowest point about the time of the Great Exhibition. Fifty years have now passed since the close of the century (at time of printing) and it has become possible to view the period in perspective, to appraise its achievement unemotionally, and to distinguish in it the surprising amount of good work from the welter of actively ugly architecture. This Mr. Turnor has very ably succeeded in doing. He writes as a humanist, not merely as an architectural critic, and his book will for this reason appeal to everyone who is fascinated in the history of taste in Regency and Victorian times. He is primarily concerned to understand how architecture came to take the 'wrong turning' and he believes that the explanation lies mainly in the Victorian applicatiion of moral standards to aesthetic and practical questiions. The Regent Park terraces are finely illustrated, but so too are terraces at Reading and Ramsgate; churches by Pugin, Scott, Barry and Butterfield appear equally with those of such less well-known designers as James Savage, R.C. Carpenter, J.D. Sedding and J.R. Brandon; the great architectural monuments such as the Houses of Parliament, the Crystal Palace, the British Museum and St. George's Hall, Liverpool are all well illustrated, and so also are the railways stations at Dublin, the neo-Greek buildings of Edinburgh, the world of John Foulston, Thomas Telford, John Dobson, C.R. Mackintosh, and mnay other provincial architects whose achievements deserve to be better known." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very slight lean to spine, small bump at bottom corner of front board, front board slightly curled. Dust jacket has light browning on spine, flap-folds and edges; light edge wear and a few very small edge chips; two small shallow dents on front panel; protected in a mylar sleeve.
