THE QUIET FIELDS., 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford.
1 'BB'. Illustrated by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford. THE QUIET FIELDS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1981, first edtion.
206 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718120396 Charming b&w illustrations. "There is a growing need for the 'quiet fields' in this noisy, restless world. Mercifully, they can still be found by the country-lover and naturalist . This book tells of a year spent deep in the countryside, beginning when the year is young, when trees and hedges are bare to the winter winds, and on through the spring, summer and autumn, to winter once again. Whatever the season of t h e y e a r t h ere is always something to see in the countryside, even when the 'quiet fields' are sheeted with snow. There are the winter migrants - the wildfowl of the wet places, the delicate fieldfares and redwings - who come to Britain to e sc ap e t he b it t er t emperatures of their native lands. 'BB' also describes the advent of the spring migrants, which bring such intense joy to the naturalist that he even had to surrender his studio to a swallow family, which honoured him wi th a v is it and tw o l us ty bro ods of young. And the arrival of frogs at his Big Pond, the first for years, was a red-letter day in his calendar. There is still magic and a sense of peace in Britain's woods and fields. This book sets out to p rov e it , a nd the illu stra tio ns by D .J. Watkins-Pitchford echo exactly the spirit of the writing...." 447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

Buckingham Baron 2002 0860236714 / 9780860236719 Limited Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
211 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Number 528 of a limited edition. INSCRIBED ON LIMITATION PAGE, "WITH BEST WISHES, ROY DERHAM". B&w illustrations. "Twelve weeks with TS 'Vindicatrix' prepared young lads for a life at sea, but not for the first trip - on liner, coaster, collier or cargo boat, cruise ship, tanker or tramp steamer. Often bullied, invariably seasick; cold, wet, hungry and initially miserable, most matured to become old hands - stewards, cooks or sometimes Master. Others swore never to go to sea again, and over four hundred lost their young lives for their country. Many became Distressed Seamen, yet survived. Some were torpedoed, sometimes more than once; some found themselves in prison camps. Others sailed to exotic places and met strange people. A few jumped ship and several fell overboard. Some were pushed. Most of them had strange experiences, saw far flung lands, and made lifetime friends. Many fell in love with the sea while some hated it but it earnt the respect of them all. Most express few regrets and all those in this book remember it well - that first trip as a graduate Vindi-boy, untried, uncertain and just a little afraid. This is the sum of the maiden voyages of over fifty Vindi-boys, who learnt their trade with the old lady of Sharpness between 1939 and 1966." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - spine very slightly cocked, very minor edge wear.

THE GATECRASHERS., Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner.
5 Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner. THE GATECRASHERS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1984, first edition.
297 pp + postscript, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718123786 Map endpapers. "Horribly cramped, it lurched sickeningly while being towed and tended to be dripping wet inside. The X-craft midget submarine was hardly the obvious choice of vessel to pitch against the mighty battleship 'Tirpitz' in her Norwegian lair. Like pitching a tadpole against a whale; but in this case, the whale had a soft underbelly and the tadpole a pair of two-ton explosive stings like blisters on its sides. If the sub could survive its nightmarish 1,000-mile haul across the North Sea, Paul Everard would have his chance to gatecrash the fjords - past minefields, patrol craft, shore defences and steel nets - and cripple the ship which Churchi ll had called 'the Beast'. Even if he succeeded, the chances of escaping alive were slim. If he failed, Nick Everard, commanding Arctic convoy PQ19, was in for a pounding. None of his ships could hope to match the firepower of the 'Tirpit z ' o r p i erce her fifteen-inch armour. As 'The Gatecrashers' draws to its thunderous climax, father and son, their lives balancing on a knife-edge, face their final, most searching test. 'The Gatecrashers' is based on the true story of Operat io n S ou rc e : si x X-craft crossed the North Sea in September 1943 to attack the 'Tirpitz, Scharnhorst' and 'Lutzow' in Altenfjord, where they were kept out of bomber range behind formidable defences. Although (this book) stands on its own as a nov el , it is al so th e ninth and last in the Everard series of naval adventures, which started with Nick as a somewhat bloody-minded midshipman at Jutland in 1916. Although fictional, the setting of each story is historically and technically ac cura te. Cap tai n J .E. Moo re, Editor of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', had written: 'I have not found this splendid authenticity in any naval fiction since C.S. Forester's heyday'." Faint cigarette odor. Dust jacket has light berowning on spine, sl ight brow n ing at e dges , mi nor e dge wrinkling, very small dint on front hinge. Very Good+/Very Good

Novato, CA Presidio 1990 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
348 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, drawings/diagrams. "Paul Gillcrist was a navy carrier pilot for almost thirty years, from the early days of flying propeller planes from straight-deck carriers, to the days of hig h-tech, lethal 'teen' jets and supercarriers. In his remarkable career - from 'nugget', to competent jet aviatior, to test pilot, to Vietnam fighter pilot, to air wing commander, to head of 'Fightertown USA', Gillcrist flew the F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, and a myriad of other carrier aircraft. He took part in the Navy's transition to jet aircraft, when accident rates were high and many feared that jets would not be able to operate in the harsh, demanding environment of 'blue water ops'. (He) saw the introduction of critical innovations - the angled deck, steam catapult, optical landing system - that saved carrier jet aviation from extinction. Few aviatiors have had such varied and fascinating experiences; and few could write about them with such eloquence." Two tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny/small foxing marks on endpapers - mainly rear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few minor scuffs,an area of foxing on inside of rear panel.

"The bulk of the world's cruising fleet emanates from non-coral areas and carries out most of its crui sing within coral waters. There is therefore a positive need to understand the realities: the seasons of trade winds; the behaviour of destructive winds; the special foods to be found in the tropics; the dangers of coral waters and the spe c i a l p r o b lems of navigating and anchoring there. Cruising in coral is different. Not terrifyingly so, as some sailing authors might have you believe, but different enough to warrant a general overhaul of nautical attitudes and practices as w el l as ga in in g general knowledge pertinent to that environment." E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL., Moore, Doris Langley.
11 Moore, Doris Langley. E. NESBIT: A BIOGRAPHY. REVISED WITH NEW MATERIAL.
Philadelphia Chilton Books 1966 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good -
313 pp, 8 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "Publication of this first biography ever written about E. Nesbit (1858-1924), whose books for children have delighted readers young and old, is a literary event of major importance. Mrs. Langley Moore has written a new introduction to the present edition, telling a number of things that had to be omitted from the original work, when so many of E. Nesbit's contemporaries or members of her family were still alive. Also, the entire book has been revised and relevant material that either had to be left out originally, or has been discovered since, has been added. Edith Nesbit married Hubert Bland, a young journalist and enthusiastic Socialist, in 1880. He took the chair at the first meeting of the Fabian Society and both were active in the Fabian movement. When Bland, while ill, was defrauded by a business partner, Edith Nesbit was forced to earn the family's living. She began to write poems, short stories, and recitiations, and made hand painted Christmas cards. After fifteen years of literary hack work, in which she produced some thirty-three books, she hit her stride with the writing of 'The Treasure Seekers', the first of the stories about the irrepressible Bastable children. Among the other books that have made her a household favorite are 'The Wouldbegoods', 'Five Children and It', 'The House of Arden', and 'The Story of the Amulet'. (The author) has given us a remarkable portrait of the genesis of a writer, and the writer's world. In seeking out her information she contacted many of the most eminent literary and theatrical figures in England at the time." Minor toning to margins of pages, light toning and faint foxing mark on fore-edge of text block, minor soiling on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, general light browning - more on spine and flap-folds, one very small edge tear sticker removal/soiling mark at top corner of front panel, very small foxing mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

KITCHENER: THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND., Warner, Philip.
17 Warner, Philip. KITCHENER: THE MAN BEHIND THE LEGEND.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1985, first edition.
247 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0241115876 B&w photographs, map/battle plans, reproductions. "Kitchener was one of the most successful and far-sighted generals Britain has ever had, and his reputation was worldwide. But he has always been a mystery. Legends proliferated about him in his lifetime, and the circumstances of his death have remained an enigma. Not until recently, with the fresh material which has come to light, has it been possible to find the re al person behind that enormous, intimidating moustache. In this absorbing and percipient study, we begin to realise what a debt Britain owes to Kitchener. Far from being the remote, austere figure of the placards, he was a daring adventurer a n d s p y, a meticulous planner and perfectionist, and a commander who took his place in the forefront of the battle in order to know exactly what was happening. Like modern generals, Kitchener believed that battles should be won before they ar e f ou gh t , an d proved that small, well-organized armies could defeat vastly superior forces. In the Sudan he defeated his enemy in a final, searing battle; in South Africa he fought an entirely different campaign in which he methodically remov ed al l h is en em y's advantages. Setbacks only spurred him to greater efforts. He was trusted by civilians; worshipped by his soldiers; and detested by most of his officers. When he became Commander-in-Chief in India he had no war to fight, b ut he l eft the ar my in g ood shape for when its time came. His talent as a planner was great, and much thought was given to thwarting the Russian ambitions in Afghanistan. In the end the Soviets did not invade that country until sixty years aft er his d eath . A nd a lth ough, in company with Churchill, he is blamed for the Dardanelles disaster, recent disclosures of the limitations of contemporary naval gunnery have shown that the real blame lay elsewhere. In this book (Warner) investi gat es the pers onal myths as well a s the public man; Kitchener's dislike of politicians and the stormy episodes this caused later in his career; the fact that he never married because his intended bride died suddenly at the age of eighteen (he w as n ot homo sexual ); hi s abil ity to find friends among the ranks of his enemies as well as enemies among his friends; and what lay behind his untimely death in 1916." 470 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and maps/battle plans. "Antwerp, Leopold Canal, Woensdrecht, Breskens Pocket, Walcheren Island - these place names live on in the memories of World War Two veterans of Canadian infantry and armoured divisions who fought in the mud and wet against an unbending enemy. It was 1944 and the Canadian army, with divisions from the U.K., U.S., and Poland, had been given the difficult task of liberating the port of Antwerp and clearing both banks of the Scheldt River. The bitter Battle of the Scheldt lasted 86 days, and took the lives of more than 12,000 Allied soldiers. Brigadier General Denis Whitaker was a lieutenant-colonel in that battle, commanding the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. For this book, he interviewed more than 150 men who fought alongside him on the Dutch polders. Meticulously researched in Europe and Canada, (this book) does not tread lightly on accepted notions of military historians. Revised with a new afterword, this important true story of nineteen- and twenty-year-old soldiers, many of whom died miserably on the sodden polders of Zeeland, deserves to be read again and again." They saw for the first time those vast bodies of water, cruisers, corvettes, mine-sweepers, b a t t lships, etc., and learned how to get up on deck, to lean over the rail when they felt a meal coming up, also how to dress to stand the cold and wet of a four-hour watch at sea.
